Carrying the M1 across the Boyne River, the Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that was completed in 2003. It is named for the President of Ireland who served from 1997 to 2011 to honor her contribution to Ireland's peace process. She is the second female president of Ireland, and the first woman in the world to succeed another woman as president. She was also the first born in Northern Ireland to become President of Ireland.
The highway is four lanes - two in each direction, with a breakdown lane on the outside. It has 20 meters of clearance over the river. There is no toll to cross the bridge.
