Brú Na Bóinne is a patch of green earth like no other we have ever seen.
From a distance, it might look like some sort of modern indoor sports stadium with a green roof. In reality, it is a 5,000 year old burial site, that is older than the Pyramids in Giza, or Stonehedge by over a thousand years.
Brú Na Bóinne is made up of three of these burial tombs, Knowth, Newgrange and Dowth. These megalithic tombs can be found all over Ireland and Western Europe. But the ones found at Brú Na Bóinne are the best kept and well preserved.
Newgrange is probably the most famous, given that we can still go into it and see the ruin up close. It also was built with a solar cycle in mind, where the rising sun lights up the back of the tomb around the Winter Solstice. Knowth allow for a beautiful sweeping view of the area and there are stairs you can take to its top, see photos.
But keep in mind, to see either you must first stop at the Brú Na Bóinne Visitor Center, where you will pay admission (consider the OPW Heritage Card to save money) and get stickers with times for their shuttles buses.
Remember you cannot visit any of these sites individually. If you do, you will be turned away, as we were. So drive to the Visitor Center and Park.
If you need assistance for your Tom-Tom or Nav System, I have attached a map (see photos).
