Where do I start? Oh Boy.... I was in desperate need for a psychiatrist and my previous doctor was awful. So when I met Theodore, I felt wonderful because she discovered how I was feeling and immediately went to prescribing the medications, mostly doubling the dosage, which did help, so I'm not complaining there. As far as payment and overall communication, I didn't realize how bad things were until she was trying to take over my life by asking me personal questions- like about my sex life, which I would t even tell my best friend, especially someone I don't feel comfortable with. When I first started seeing her, I was in a bad spot, and without revealing my mental health condition, I felt like I was coming back to life, but then all the judgements came. I lost a substantial amount of weight bc she prescribed me monjauro, yes you heard it folks! When the drug was doing its job, she constantly asked me about what I was eating, blaming me and making me feel guilty for losing the weight bc that's what it does. She preyed upon my overall vulnerable state. There were sooo many red flags that I ignored. It was as if I was in a police state and I had to depend on her guidance. She never smiled, was overall intimidating and scary. She overcharges obviously, but coming from a family with means it wasn't a big deal until she started asking me about my income and when I confronted her she gave me some bullshit answer. So I wouldn't have to pay $800, yes $800 folks, I fired her explaining why in a brief text and her response was "okay." I know like can be tough and it's so hard finding care, but you will be more messed up after her. Fortunately I have a strong support system, but I am sensitive and now I'm questioning everything about myself. I implore you to do your research before finding care. read more

Dr. Theodore is a compassionate and non-judgmental psychiatrist. She listens attentively and always makes me feel understood and respected, no matter what odd things I have to share. Her advice is solid and thoughtful, helping me to navigate challenges more easily. Dr. Theodore also refined my medications until they're now working most favorably for me. Dr Theodore was fundamental in assisting me with severe depression that occurred during and past our Covid isolation. She is knowledgeable, attentive and kind. She has a dry sense of humor and had considerable compassion for me when I needed it most. She also was very much in contact with my psychologist. I am mortified by Dr. Theodore's behavior. She wildly overcharged me. The following gives a fuller picture of the whole mess. To Dr. Mary E. I was stunned by the blurry invoice you sent by text and even more startled to see the two hand-written invoices (both dated 3/20/2023) you wrote sent which make no sense. For instance, One of those "invoices" said "fee: $2,500; beneath that it says the balance is $0; the total balance is $0; the total balance is $1,500, paid in full. You said to let you know if I had any urgent needs. I do not. But I would very much appreciate it if you would mail separate printed invoices (in one envelope is fine) to my home address for each meeting we did have so I can at least try to get some Medicare assistance. (You had told me at our first session that you accept only Moda plan (the only one you listed in the "finances" section) There is another interesting section that I copied and pasted here from your "Finances" section of your website (https://drmarytheodore.com/, which appears not to be working at this point.) After our last call, I looked up what the average amounts psychiatrists normally charge: Even in NYC, the average cost per session is $400. You charged me $875 per visit (that's $19.44 per minute). This reminded me how the psychiatrist I worked for briefly (when I was about 20) would check his bank balance when deciding which patients he could talk into electroshock therapy. You and I actually discussed this practice in our first session, and I thought you'd be as horrified as I was that a therapist would do such a thing. In our last session, you "offered" 30-minute sessions at $750 ($25/minute). A couple of months ago you sent me a check for $5,000. No words of apology, but I appreciated the fact that you, in your quiet way, wanted to set things right. Then I got a bill from Quest Diagnostics saying that I owed them $1,640.59 for the tests you ordered. You apparently told Quest that they should bill Oregon Blue shield, which I do not use and you apparently decided to leave me with the bill. I am particularly uptight that we both were good with Moda, but you just decided to prevent me from getting the Moda coverage I am entitled to. read more

For the love of all that is holy STAY AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN!!!!!!!! In process of filing formal complaints to applicable medical boards in order to prevent her from damaging future clients. Prescribed medication inappropriately and carelessly with no regard to standard protocol. Accepts anyone immediately while other legitimate practices have huge waitlists. No billing services or support staff - she does it all herself. Volume is the name of her game & she is just someone with a prescription pad & a pen available for large fees. I always enjoy my visits with Dr. Mary Theodore. She is my go-to psychiatrist, for dealing with my mood disorder. Her expertise has helped me function very well while other medical treatments tended to be more limited in effect. I can count on Dr. Theodore's insights from her extensive background with a variety of clients in combination with her skills as both M.D. and licensed counselor. The prescribed medication has been successful and for the first time in my adult I am fully functioning and feel hopeful and capable. Dr. Theodore has been a lifeline for many people I know. She is the best of the best psychiatric practitioners. She really knows what she's doing, and it's always for the patient's benefit. To naysayers- I notice it's about fees. Next time you see your MD internist for 6 minutes, see your bill and multiply that by 10 for the hour you get with Dr. Theodore. Her medical degree didn't cost any less than theirs. If you don't like her fees, go elsewhere, but do not ask for the appointment knowing in advance her fully disclosed fee, just to write a negative review about it later. You have no one to blame but yourself. If you're over 18 and know your social security and insurance info, you should be able to fill out an insurance form all by yourself. Grow up please. read more

Advertises to attract susceptible clients. Charges outrageous fees without assisting with getting reimbursed by insurance carrier. I had to literally print invoices and have her sign them . Over prescribes meds rather than taking the time to properly evaluate conditions. Claims to accept insurance but you will be billed and have to try for reimbursement. She should be ashamed preying on those with mental health conditions. read more

Dr. Theodore has been amazing. She is extremely thorough in her understanding of me as an individual (medically and personally). She found solutions that previous doctors had not and I am far better for it. She is also very timely and incredibly responsive. She goes deep in her sessions and I highly recommend her. read more

TL;DR this woman is a disgrace to the medical and psychiatric professions. She is a mediocre doctor at best, but more importantly is an extortionist, manipulator and should be removed from licensure. Also, for whatever reason, someone else's one star review is not showing up (have to look at reviews not currently recommended), but they had the same experience I did. I wish I had seen this before.) I saw Dr. Theodore for a psychiatric check-up during early pregnancy after moving from New York. In New York, my job was a research coordinator at New York State Psychiatric Institute and I have a Masters in Clinical Psychology, so I have worked for and with some of the best psychiatrists in the world over the past several years. I called Dr. Theodore, and should have been tipped off by the fact that she herself answered the phone, and does not have a receptionist. We spoke for a few minutes, I told her my background, she asked about my insurance. I said it was XXXX, to which she replied, "great!" I interpreted that as she was in-network, which was my mistake and I take responsibility for that. She did not disclose any fee at this time, nor did she mention that she does not bill insurance or that she is not in-network with any insurance. I showed up for my appointment, which was 45 minutes, even though she told me her normal consultation was an hour. She took me through a standard checklist for mental disorders which I myself (a master's level) have given at least 300 times to different potential patients at NYSPI. I mentioned I had a sister, and 5 minutes later, she said "oh, your brother..." so she was obviously not listening. There were several slips like these throughout that gave evidence to the fact that she was not listening to me. At the end of 40 minutes, she re-diagnosed me with the same basic diagnoses I've been dealing with for years, and then said, "ok, time to discuss my fee. I charge $750 for the first session, and $650 for follow-ups." I was appalled, as having lived in New York City, I know the top rates of world class psychiatrists top out at $300 for a session. Maybe $450 if you're working with Sigmund Freud's second cousin. But $750 is highway robbery. It's also such an exorbinant fee that it should most certainly be disclosed before the session. She insisted I pay in that moment with my HSA card, and didn't give me any time to enquire about the insurance. I wrote her a letter to tell her about this experience and that I was going to report her, and of course I didn't hear a word back. This woman is a highway robber and an incompetent psychiatrist. Find someone else. read more

Dr. Theodore is seriously the best Psychiatrist I have seen in my 30 years of mental illness. For the first time in my life, I feel stable, I am not suicidal, and I function at a high level. I thank Dr. Theodore for finding the right medication combination to make this happen. She is easy to talk to and I feel fully supported when I am with her. She responds to phone calls promptly and responds to the pharmacy to refill my medication. While in Denver, Colorado (almost 30 years ago), I saw a well-known and highly regarded psychopharmacologist. He never got my medications correct, and I resolved myself after three visits to living with my mental illness. The experience with Dr. Theodore is so much better than that was with a doctor who should have known medications and medication combinations much better. Never going back here. The psychiatrist was rude, impersonal, and didn't seem to care about why I was actually there. She ran through a full questionnaire that she asks everyone regardless of the reason they are there that included questions about hallucinations, schizophrenia, and the like when I was just there for depression. I had to tell her the name and contact information four times so she clearly wasn't listening to me and then she was completely unwilling to bill any insurance or send a prescription anywhere. All this for the (previously unmentioned) fee of $450 and she never told me before I showed up and had attended the full appointment that she wasn't in any insurance networks. She even made me use a credit card instead of a debit, cash, or check. Then she retained my credit card information without my knowledge and charged me for my next appointment even when I did not attend. No call to confirm the appointment, no attempt to verify that I was still planning to attend like there was with the first appointment, and no mention of a 24 or 48 hour cancellation period. She made me feel like a second-class citizen because I have a mental illness, and was completely unconcerned with making the process easy for me, even though my illness tends to make just living my life difficult. I expected far better from a mental health professional and I will never be going back. read more

I wish there was a 0 star rating because that's what I would give Dr. Theodore. I saw her for approximately two years. During those two years she flooded me with med after med. She would spend an average of 10 minutes with me during my visits. I don't think she smiled one time during any of my visits, ever. She literally has the worse bedside manners you could imagine. The amount of meds she gave me were making me sick, lethargic and overall worse off. When I switched to a new psychiatrist it was like a dream. He's the kindest man who prescribes the minimum meds needed to help you. I take two medications now. With Dr. Theodore I took six! I'm happy and healthier I've ever been now. My years with Dr. Theodore were so terrible because she overmedicates. Seriously though, don't expect a friendly doctor. Don't expect a doctor who treats you like a normal human being, expect one who sees herself as holier than thou. Make sure you also don't expect a minimum amount of meds needed or a doctor who will spend more than 10 minutes with you. Just don't go see Dr. Theodore. read more
