Kowalczyk Concrete

Kowalczyk Concrete

(1 review)

Maverick Kowalcyk is owner. I needed estimate for back steps and surrounding concrete. I asked him…read moreif he knew the code for putting in steps as I am older with health problems and wanted them to be safe. Permit required if taking out old steps and putting in new. He said he knew the code regulations for putting in steps. I trusted he would follow through. When job was completed noted The steps were not wide enough for my foot and none of it was squared. As much as 1" on each end of step. I called city inspector to look at it as my foot kept slipping off the end causing me to fall. The inspector wrote a letter for me and also called me. He reported that there was nothing about the steps that was up to code causing it to be a hazard. Also I noticed that water was collecting by my fencegate causing ice in winter. Maverick told me they pushed the concrete down because the gate was low. There are two screws that allow adjust ment of the gate height. I could have done it for them. Also they did not smooth out the concrete in a large area by the gate showing trowel marks all the way across about 10ftx10ft section. In the middle of the project b4 cement was being poured he asked me to pay him. This was b4 the job was completed but I trusted him and he did give me copy of his insurance liability paperwork. He came back with the check and wanted it to be made out to knife river concrete otherwise he could not get concrete. I felt I needed to do that so the job could get done. Then after a couple of months found 3 large cracks about 5 ft long. This was done in July of last year and I noticed the cracks two months later. I realized he had lied to me about knowing the code requirements after speaking to inspector. I called him and also sent him letter from inspector and pictures of all the issues. He wrote to me and said " you did not fall off steps when I was there", also told me cracks are normal with temperature changes and could have been a problem with the concrete. I brought up pooling water and he said "we did that because gate was too low" I shared with him that the fence gate is adjustable with two screws". He said we'll "I had to leave and left other guys to do that part". After some discussion he promised to take care of these issues right away in the spring. I just contacted him April 22nd 2025 and he only responded by saying I had to wait until June or July, I let him know falls have occurred and this needs to be taken care of right away. He didn't respond after that. I called his liability insurance carrier and found out he only took out policy for 3 months and cancelled it after my job was done July 2024. My plan is to recoup funds i paid him by conciliation court process and hire a contractor who is honest and cares about my safety.
