I guess there are plenty of us who end the day by sighing 'Screw it. The broccoli in the fridge can wait.' I've passed the aptly titled Kebab House plenty of times before, located on the corner of Nicholson & Scotchmer. It's within handy screw-it distance from several pubs and while it might not be the closest, it's probably the best. The range is pretty average but the quality is great. A friendly smile greets you, and seating is provided for a short wait (or a sit down if for some reason you prefer to dine in the typical atmosphere vacuum of these kind of places). After a while, you pays your money and you gets your food. No surprises there. We all know how it works. The food is a step above. Think fresh ingredients, perfect sized servings and good wrapping so you can eat as you stagger, ahem, walk home without getting it all down your shirt like I've definitely never done. You're looking at $10-12 for a kebab so not cheap but fair value for a quality bite. Recommended.

The chicken kebab on Turkish with everything was tasty and flavourful. In that case you really can't go past a kebab, especially since you can eat it while wandering around the streets. As such this place really does serve its purpose quite well - their kebabs are cheap, easy, and quite filling. While it isn't a place that you can really sit down and enjoy a good meal, it is a place to grab something late at night to really put paid to those hunger pains.

By OK, I mean I haven't had an experience as bad as Tim O's, but I've never had a great one either. Hasir's go for the colourful and clean approach to kebabs; there are images of the meat sandwiches on the walls and the place is too-brightly lit. There is something to be said for a bit of dinge in a kebab shop and it carries through to the flavour a bit like a too-clean barbecue. Given that the only time I'll ever go for a kebab is late and night and with a gut full of piss, the lighting in here is unfavourable. Plus, I've had instances here (late night ones) where they seemingly lose track of orders through pushy drunks and wait times, in this unfortunate fluorescent light, can be a bit long. That said, they are providing a public service by eliminating hangovers. There's nothing bad about that.

After selecting your size, you then choose meat or falafel to go inside, and then are offered a huge range of salads to accompany your choice. I like the fact that hot chips are considered as a salad item, and this saves you having to shove them inside your kebab yourself. After this, you get to choose between about 15 different sauces to top your kebab, and I almost always mix about 3 to create a hot, saucy, sure fire hangover cure. Another great addition is the chilli chips. These are hot chips covered in a peri peri like seasoning that is sure to warm your insides. Available in a meal deal for a good price, I'll see you there next Sunday.

Then you've got all these solid Pellegrini's and Tiamo type joints that serve stoic, no frills Italian at reasonable prices but they ain't nothing special. Then you have the more fancy end. La Taverna would like to occupy the fancy end but their food is more Pellegrini's (which is not a bad thing). The trouble is, you know you can get solid Italian food with zero fuss at these other places, whereas La Taverna is all about the table cloths and cutlery and shit. So, if being a bit pampered while eating some pretty decent Italian classics is your bag, then La Taverna may well be for you. There is stiff competition for the lunchtime crowd amongst the many kebab joints along Sydney Road and Tarabish is new. I think that there was an Italian pizza restaurant there before. Inside there were plenty of seats, tables and booths with a wood floor and tasteful décor, unlike so many of the other kebab joints. There are two tables of people eating lunch but it was far from full. As I wait for my falafel to be made I notice that Tarabish has a full menu of Lebanese food to eat in or take away. And the food is all Halal. I asked for a falafel roll with the lot, yes, the pink pickles and even a bit of chili sauce. The selection of soft drink can was not inspiring - just the regular assortment. But the falafel roll tasted so good; the salad was so springing and fresh, the falafel balls crunched and then were soft and delicious. The whole thing tasted amazing. I'm going to do this again while it is still new and before everyone else discovers this little restaurant.

Spuds and everything Spud related (actually, that's not true, just spuds). Everything you could think of having on a pizza, they seem to be able to put on a spud here. The Moroccan Dahl spud is a definite winner, and the bottled brew they serve here complement your quick bite before it's out again into the night. This is favourite of the few I've been in, and I think it's the low key casual nature of it that wins every time. You really can't go wrong and the coconut ice-cream is the perfect way to cool down any burning mouths if you get any spicy mains. Love it here. Oh - and don't steal any grapes or food on a plate near the register. I *might* not have seen the statue the first time I was there and so thought the grapes were a cute touch (like mints at the counter) and *might* have popped one in my mouth. The server very politely informed me what I was doing, and then presented me with a plate of grapes from the kitchen of my own, which was super lovely of them considering I had just committed massive sacrilege to their culture and religion by stealing food from the gods. I also really like the pants they wear here.

Nakorn Siam puzzles me…read more It has the potential to be a really great Thai restaurant, the kind where people from suburbs away will make bookings, or turn up in the vain hope that they may be able to get a table. The mains are fabulous: the Pad Thai is to die for, and the curries and stir-fries are always delicious and authentic, and I have yet to be disappointed with the size of the servings. However sloppy service (it was hard to manage to catch anyone's attention), boring entrees (tasteless spring rolls and bland crispy tofu), and an unimaginative dining atmosphere and setting land it firmly in the realm of the 'local' Thai restaurant. Takeaway serving aren't nearly as generous as eating in so you may want to order a few mains, or just bite the bullet and get a table if you want to try it. For quality Thai cuisine, you are better off heading to other suburbs or into the city. Judging by the mains, the Nakorn Siam has the potential to produce some excellent dishes but they can't seem to get the whole act together.

I had the degustation lunch in the front dining area which has just enough room for tables along each wall with a narrow aisle between. Floorboards and textured cream walls added a rustic feel. I asked the waitress to chose a wine for me and a couple of minutes later she was back with a fresh bottle of La Tense Nebbiolo. Very light, and a good start to the meal. Three dishes arrived at my table almost immediately after the wine; a small portion of eggplant lasagne, a plate with a seared scallop topped with poppy seeds on a pool of very light fresh tomato mousse, a little bowl of fried whitebait and a side of diced tomatoes, and a third plate with two slices of rare roast beef covered in a very mild tuna and caper sauce. Excellent starters, but the scallop and the beef were standouts for me. At least until the next course arrived. This was the special of the day; duck pasta garnished with shaved truffles on a creamy truffle and pecorino cheese sauce. Delicious. Next up was a piece of pork belly served on celeriac emulsion with a reduction of myrtle berries (mirto in Italian) which are grown on the family farm. This came with a side of baked carrots. Never been a fan of pork belly, and honestly probably never will be, but this was one of the better variations I've eaten. To finish, I had a lovely, soft Corsican sheep's milk cheese with an ash and rosemary rind served with apple purée, mandarin segments and almonds. Once again my waitress came to the party by choosing not-too-sticky dessert wine to accompany it - a gorgeous Sardinian white called Angelus. The five course set lunch menu costs $55 ($70 for me as I upgraded to the special of the day) plus wine. The chef here has a very subtle touch and every dish was well balanced with interesting flavour combinations. Da Noi means "our place" in Italian, and I certainly felt right at home from the moment I sat down. My definition of great service is that no matter how busy the restaurant is (and the day I went every table was full) the staff make you feel like you're the only person there. And that's exactly how the staff at Da Noi made me feel. Great restaurant and definitely worth another visit.
