On arrival, our greeting from reception was lacking hospitality and friendliness. Without warning, our room was situated directly across from a playground. As it was during the warm weather, the playground was packed with children from early in the morning until late in the evening. The location of the room wasn't ideal when you're looking to relax, especially when you work in a primary school. The hotel did not have air conditioning and the rooms were extremely warm. There was also a heating unit in our room, that was on a timer to come on during the night. On the first night, there was also loud music playing, coming from what we assumed was a party/wedding on the grounds. Opening the balcony door was not an option. We requested an ice bucket from the bar to cool water and a bottle of prosecco, however we were told they only had pint glasses at the time. As the room did not have a fridge, we raised this issue at the reception desk. The same receptionist that checked us in, again being very unfriendly and hostile, stated that none of the rooms had fridges and there wasn't much that she could do. She ensured us that she would request an ice bucket from housekeeping, and someone would be up to our room. However, no one came up to our room and no other solution was offered. Apart from the receptionist that we dealt with, all other staff were lovely, especially the spa receptionist and the girl who served us afternoon tea, Natalia. Our biggest disappointment, however, was the uncleanliness and foulness of the room. In the bathroom, there was grime around the shower and limescale around the taps and shower head. There was scruff marks on the doors, walls and countertops. There was red stains on the carpet, and appalling stains on the back and front of the curtains. The curtains and net curtains had multiple rips and tears (photos attached). In the room, there was a comment card. As a couple, we filled it out very honestly and handed it in when checking out. It was hard to justify having paid €330 for a two night mid week stay. To date, there has been no contact made by staff to acknowledge that our stay was unacceptable and standards were below that of any hotel or hostel in Ireland.

All in all service was pretty slow, felt sorry for the girls working as they were running between the bar at the other side of the hotel and to us in the restaurant to serve us. They really needed more waitresses working, specially on Christmas Eve! The meals were nice but the meats were pretty dry with not enough sauce offered, and felt bad even asking the girls for more stuff to bring as they were busy. But they were lovely and attentive while they served us! If you plan to go, don't go when you're starving as you could be waiting around a while. Otherwise good atmosphere for drinking as they've expanded the bar and it looks amazing and not as old fashioned as it once had been! It was too busy to take pictures

We had one castle room and one carriage room for our stay. Both rooms were quaint and well maintained. The gardens around the property are gorgeous and wonderful to explore during nice weather. The only thing to note is that in off-season the main restaurant is only open on the weekends and the tea service is not available during the week. While we enjoyed the food at Hermione's, the day we stayed there was a group event closing the main restaurant so we had to eat in the bar area. Most of the activities are off the property which wasn't very clear as we approached the date of our stay. We ended up visiting the National Stud Farm (about 30 minutes drive) and the clay pigeon shooting (about 40 minutes drive). Highly recommend both activities and really appreciate the staff helping us arrange these activities. The downstairs bar area is open late with a delicious charcuterie and board games are available to use by the fireplace which was a fun way to spend the later evening hours. Highly recommend staying at Kilkea Castle Hotel!

Thanks again for the hospitality! Cheers
