Sound of horse hooves on cobble, a slight chatter of people, the cold nippy air on a lucky sunny day.
Town sqaure's in Belgium are some of the best for people watching and checking out architecture, art or just to chill and enjoy the day. We took the train from Brussels to see Brugge and wandered over here from the station. It wasn't too long a walk, and Brugge itself isn't all that bad to walk about either. We didn't manage everything, but we explored quite a bit. One of the places you'll most likely end up in is the central Grote Markt marked by the great Belfort and even more lovely Belgian baroque architecture.
While Brugge's square is magnifcent it certainly is more airy and light than Brussel's square, Grand Place, which can be somewhat of an instant transportation back in time, but Brugge doesn't hold punches either and between horse pulled carriages the general atmosphere of the square plus architecture, well, it's certainly a place I could never find back home.
You could spend a good couple of hours hanging around the square as well as exploring the Belfort to get an incredible view of all of Brugge or Historium which tries to give you a tiny taste of medieval times. Horse drawn carriage rides are a bit expensive at 50 euros.
Brugge seems to also have garnered the name 'Venice of the North' as buildings seemingly float on a large canal that snakes through the city. On good days, boat rides are also offered a bit like in Amsterdam.
Prices on swag and merch literally drops off as you leave the center. So if you see a magnet for 5 euros at the center.. it'll be 2,00 - 2,50 a little ways out around near the canals. Something in case you're looking for deals. I also found that the shopkeepers back there will also throw you a bone to get your business. read more
