I live in more rural area of Sonoma county now and as a result I really haven't been able to find a nearby barber for myself, and I have been getting haircuts during work trips and when I return to S.F. for business travel. I am in S.F. for a healthcare meeting and looked up barbershops near Union Square and Marks popped up. I walked over and met Wayne, who has been cutting hair professionally for decades, more recently in Daly City but he needed to move to S.F. for health reasons and has been cutting hair At Mark's for less than a year now. He took me on a Sunday afternoon with no waiting and he did a masterful job of cutting my hair and he even trimmed my beard and mustache which were also badly needing some shaping. He did a great job, was pleasant to speak with and I was in and out of there in half an hour with a solid haircut for $20 and an extra $5 for the beard and mustache grooming - with a $5 tip the whole thing was $30. Well worth it and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a men's haircut from Wayne. He is there most days except for Wednesday's (or was that Tuesdays ?). Came here for years when I was living in SF. Mark is a awesome person and a very skilled barber, which is not surprising given he has been in business for decades. His haircuts are very neat and professional -- and he pays attention to the details. They take walk-in's so it was super convenient, and sometimes there's no wait, or only a short wait. I've moved out of SF sadly and just got a haircut the other day where I currently live. I've gotten my hair cut by this guy since middle school! In those years, the prices have only recently risen by $1 to $9, so holy crap, great deal for a standard men's haircut. The owner and his wife both cut hair here, though the owner usually takes the more complicated hair cases. You get to listen in on hilarious Asian lady conversations. Ex: Lady One: I've had a headache lately in the morning. Lady Two: Stop using pillows. Lady One: That's superstitious. I must be having too many pears. Yes, that's the problem. When business is slow, the owner will take out his violin and just play. How awesome is that! read more

Seeing as how I've been going to Mark's with Kevin for all these years, now is as good as a time for me to review my favorite bald-guy-cutting-hair. I come here every time I'm on break and its become so routine he always asks when I got back to SF. His daughter is in high school right now, so if you're around high school/college/grad age, it's fun to have a conversation (in Cantonese is best) about the state of higher education. Heck, the guy listens to Chinese news radio all day and can discuss American/HK/Chinese politics with you too. He'll also play violin and tell you about his new goldfish (or his new Toyota) if that's more your thing. Prices are actually $8, but the normal thing to do is to tack on a $1 tip. Standard women's haircut also starts at the same price, but prices escalate as expected if you want to do fancy stuff. They aren't the cheapest place in Chinatown, but people fresh from the other barbershops routinely come in to get Mark to correct their hairstyles. Might as well pay a dollar or two extra and do it right the first time. He also speaks serviceable English and routinely cuts the hair of cheapskate FiDi business people. And if you're just looking for a straight up haircut, I've noticed that the wife cuts better men's hair, while Mark is better at women's styles. Protip: don't come around lunch time on Saturdays and Sundays as all the kids let out from Chinese school (and their parents) will be in queue in front of you. read more

When it comes to Mark's Beauty Salon... your experience is heavily dependent on who you get. I believe that Mark was not working that day and instead there were 2 women - a middle-aged woman and a younger looking one. Atmosphere: Tiny and cramped, although that has never entirely bothered me to be honest. It certainly had a lot of....character if you're into that kind of thing. There was a CD playing but instead of ambient music it was a English-learners audiotape on repeat. I wouldn't say that did much for the ambiance. Customer Service: Very friendly which is why I did not want to rate them too low. My boyfriend needed a haircut and he didn't speak a word of Chinese. My Cantonese is conversational and decent though not completely fluent, but there still seemed to be a problem understanding each other. The younger lady was the one to cut his hair and he straight up had a clear picture for her to see and use as a reference. That helped about 0 and I was stuck as a translator in between. All in all, the cut actually took about 2 hours as the hairdresser was shitting herself trying to get it right. 30 minutes before it was over, she was nearly done and I was getting ready to get up and pay. She instead spent the next 30 minutes cutting individual strands of hair, leaning back and looking, then cutting another single strand. It's great that she cares a lot about her work and it's a very lovely quality but sometimes it's just a bit too much. However, looking at the older woman in the salon she had gotten through 4 customers before the younger woman finished. This basically is a huge telling that maybe we were just really unlucky and got stuck with an inexperienced apprentice. Hey, everyone has to learn somewhere! Unfortunately, even though in my heart I know Mark's Beauty Salon can be good and I'm definitely willing to give it another try - the review has to be based off of the experience we had which was a lot less than fantastic. I gave the woman a tip anyway because I felt really horrible (her hands were shaking the whole time). read more

I am normally a customer of Sarios, but I needed a hair cut when Sario's was closed one night and Mark happened to be open. I showed Mark a photo of the hair cut I wanted and he was able to recreate it very well. When I went to pay I couldn't believe it was only $8 for the haircut! Apparently Mark has been cutting hair in China town for over 30 years! I think I will go here over Sario's from now on, even though Sario's was excellent, this place is basically as good, has no line, and costs less than half the price! read more

Called Mark at 8pm to check his hours. He said the store closed an hour ago but since I was leaving to go out of town the next day he would open up the shop and meet me. I arrived 10 minutes later to a dark shop with a bald Asian man playing violin (quite well) in the corner of the shop. Was greeted with a smile and 20 minutes later my ears had been lowered just right. Nice guy, detail oriented, great haircut and price $15.
