A golden standard for Italian sandwiches in this neighborhood…read more Buy them by the layer... try the 18 if ya have a empty belly and want half for later haha. Grab a dmall thing of antipasta or pasta salad and a small thing of mixed olives and peppers from the salad bar. The perfect lunch. Also after going here for 39 years, i realized i can also just buy mortadella by the pound. Mortadella is hard to come by without taking a 30 minute drive so this was a late revelation for me. Walk in, stand in front of the counter, tell em what ya want, wait 2 minutes and walk to the counter with your sandwich to pay.

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. The Service is ultra friendly. And the atmosphere feels like and Italian Deli-Market. I recommend it.

The Hygrade Deli has become my favorite breakfast/diner spot in all of Detroit. Honestly, I'm just…read moresick of paying over $15 for an omelette and hash browns, and Hygrade is very affordable and quality. For one, I'm a huge Pastrami fan, and Hygrade is one of the few spots in the area that have it and don't overcharge for it (*cough Louie's *cough Frank's), so I always get their Pastrami omelette with hash browns. The portion is huge and it's under $12. It's my favorite thing to get for breakfast in the entire city. Hygrade feels very much like a diner, and that's what I love about it. Like this isn't some spot for a brunch extravaganza. You can go here for a nice breakfast or lunch and eat in peace. I find it's an ideal place to get work done due to its low-key atmosphere. The waitresses are very attentive and quick, helped by the fact that I've never seen the place packed. I'm a sucker for old school Detroit and Hygrade just oozes that. The place gets the job done and if you go once, you will go back.

The gravy for my turkey sandwich was like water. Lower quality meats/ingredients. The front person was handling money at the register and preparing food simultaneously. Yuck. The cook kept leaving the kitchen on his cellphone. No gloves. I used to love this place.

I have been a big fan of corned beef and pastrami for years but my go to is on the other side of the city not to far from Dearborn, there is a couple other delis in eastern market area, one I like and the other I think is outrageous and the people there are rude, well today I was in the mood for a good corned beef on rye, got looking at a few apps I have and I come across Champs which is in Gratiot Central market where I go to buy certain meats to grill and smoke, but I never have gone there to buy prepared food, well I'll tell you it was Very Good ! The place is simple ,it is clean, they have a cool old Ford truck in there well the have half of it but none the a nice place , and the lady that waited on me was very cool, I decided I wanted Pastrami Indian it was excellent the , it was not greasy which is what I like to see it was heated just right and got slaw on it and my bread wasn't a soggy mess, I thought the price point was very good for my sandwich which also came with 2 pickles that were good and my drink, And the info I read is this is a small business this isn't corporate owned this is someone or family doing it cause they love please try support small business they need it now more than ever , I thought it was very good I hope you do as well.
