Bergen Ymca Hostel - 4th floor rooftop deck shows just how close you're to everything

I have foot problems and I wanted something close to the train station and close to the terminal where we would later board the Hurtigruten. It was a 10 minute walk from the train station and more like 20 minutes to Hurtigruten (shoulda called a taxi for that one). It's very close to Bryggen and the fish market. Also, the Hop On/Hop Off stops right by the fish market and the TI is here too. Room was fine, nothing special but it's a hostel. The roof top deck is a bonus. Kitchen was great for cooking meals but not the cleanest, although that was the fault of other hostel guests.

I advise booking early because on the Saturday I arrived, the tourist information center had a sign saying ALL accommodation was booked in the city center. Overall, YMCA was a solid stay for just a couple of nights. I definitely appreciated the location, it's a quick walk to the tourist info center, the fish market, and the fløibanen. They accept online payment but note that towel rental is 10 NOK in cash. As far as accommodation, this is about as basic as it gets. Cheap bunk beds, itchy sheets, and only one set of plugs in the corner so everyone gets to fight to charge their electronics at night.

4.5 Stars...the rooms could use a fresh coat of paint!…read more Price: Awesome! Approximately $150/night, which is reasonable for the location and Norway. Location: Awesome! The Airport Bus will drop you off at Tourist Information/Fish Market, which is basically basically right in front of the hotel, and right in the middle of Bergen. All the boats nearby whether you're going on boat tour or taking the Norled ferry. Cleanliness: our room was definitely older and could use some new paint, but the rest of the common areas were great. Staff: I didn't talk to them much, but seemed nice enough. Room: Good enough for the price. Quite large with a big lcd tv. Fresh coat of paint needed, but everything was clean enough. BREAKFAST: EPIC! Smoked Salmon, Baked Salmon, Herring, Crab Salad, Waffles, sausages, eggs, fresh breads, fruits, cheeses...deliciousness! You could eat enough that you only need a snack for lunch.Better than some buffets in Las Vegas. Once I even sneakily made myself a salmon sandwich to go...ssshhh! ;) There is also coffee and tea available all day long, which is godsend in a country where coffee and tea can easily run you $3-5/cup. The hotel is so well located that it was easy to stop in for a 20min coffee break between sight seeing. A fresh coat paint would make this a 5 Star! (Note: At time of this review, the US dollar was up 50% against the Norway kroner...$1 = 7.5kr vs $1 = 5kr just a couple years ago)

The shape of the place is what the issue was, calling it a shithole is being polite and I don't have enough room or time to list everything. I strongly suggest you select an other hotel if you have not yet booked this one. We arrived and…read morethere was a line up of 6+ people to check in. One person working and 2 others just talking to each other but not helping. Waited 30 minutes to get up elevator as bus arrived as we were going to room. Rooms have not been updated in 30 years. Old furniture, lights not working and our main light missing a bulb. But it gets worse. At night the music started playing for a wedding and went on well past midnight and no way you could sleep. Clearly the value the revenue from the party over guest comfort. I honestly am at a loss how this could be a 4 star hotel. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else in town

Nice hotel, warm room…read more The hotel is located very close to the train station and is near the tourist hot spots of Downtown Central Bergen. The front desk staff were very nice. They showed me exactly to my room. They answered all of my questions. They even helped me read my train ticket that I was confused about. The breakfast buffet is pretty good. Standard Norwegian breakfast. The dining area is nice. The front desk staff upgraded our room for free. We had a room offsite of the hotel in the villas. The villa room is quite nice. It is very clean. The bathroom is small but had a heated floor which made it nice. I downgraded the review because there's no air conditioning. I guess this is standard for Norway due to the weather, but I was sweating pretty bad and did not sleep well because I was just too hot.

There was no AC, but in their defense, none ever needs AC in Norway The chain outside the door was pretty intimidating (in their defense, I believe they were undergoing renovations) Their bar downstairs closed early and it was not really a neat place The building I stayed did not have an elevator (not that it really needed it because there weren't many floors in the building) The good: The price: the price was really cheap for Norwegian standards The Service: everyone was really helpful and their English was impeccable Location: right in downtown, close to everything Neatness: the bathrooms were recently renovated and everything was really clean The beds : they were clean, puffy, and comfortable. The manager, very handsome Norwegian guy. Too bad I did not get his number!

I stayed in early September (off peak season) and price for a private 2 bed was nearly the same as a hostel -Room was comfortable, bed was fine, I expected only 1 pillow so no biggy -Bathroom was small, but suitable -I personally enjoyed being right above a few great bars. The hotel was easy to find from the bus stop, easy to get to train station, and I was feet away from a beer! -Front staff was polite and helpful -Was very loud with windows open which we needed for cooler air
