First I started by using Germany Service to get all of the birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates. I don't know if this step helped me in the process, but I did learn a lot more about my family's history. I will say I spent the better part of a year to get all of the documents I wanted (since I didn't know much information I'd need to get a document to give me enough information to request another document). I started the process with Siegwart German American Law in January of 2017, and the certificate of citizenship was finally issued in March of 2020...so this isn't a quick process... Holger Siegwart was extremely helpful at things I don't think I could have done on my own...like when the authority requested proof my father never became a US citizen...prove a negative...great, but their law office did some research and filed a Freedom of Information Act request for me. At the beginning I was offered a flat rate or hourly option. I took the flat rate, and by the end of the process I was happy I picked that option.
