This cemetery dates back to 1857 and is huge, spanning 150 acres. It is more than just a cemetery, it is a piece of history and home to some very nice memorials. Across the street, you will find the final resting place of the 29th President of the United States, Warren Harding, and his wife. Other memorials here include the Marion County Firefighter's Memorial, The Marion Law Enforcement Memorial, the Merchant Ball, the American Legion Memorial, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Chapel, and the WWII Marion County Veterans Memorial.
There is a lot to respectfully see here, even if you do not have a loved one here. There were a few people that were walking/jogging around the cemeteries many drives, getting their exercise on. There are a few designated parking spots at the cemetery, but you can also park along one of the cemeteries driveways without any issues.
The cemetery grounds are very well maintained and the day yo day operation of the cemetery is managed by a board of trustees. Even though the cemetery has room for expansion, a lot of the graves are cramed together. I know it is a bit awkward to visit a cemetery, but as I mentioned. This one is different. It has a lot of history to see and is an amazing place.
It would be best to couple your visit to the cemetery with a visit to the Veteran's Memorial park and Harding Memorial. The Harding Library and Museum is also within a mile and a half. read more
