Oh and don't forget to stop by the visitor center first to catch the film before heading into the museum, it's completely free and sets the stage for what you will see in the museum. ​All in all, it's a worthwhile experience that the whole family will enjoy. You'll have a great time and learn a lot about early American history and whaling in New Bedford.

Haffenreffer is a tiny and FREE museum of anthropology on Brown's campus that my friend and I…read morevisited during our weekend of exploring Providence and Newport. When we visited, they had some very interesting exhibits. The one that interested me the most was "Sacred is Sacred: The Art of Protecting Bears Ears." It was very interesting and well-displayed. Why only three stars for this interesting and free museum? Well, it's tiny. It's essentially a single room. And I would think (given the size) that the likelihood of someone enjoying the museum is very dependent on the quality of the exhibits at the time of the visit. But it's free - so if you're walking around Brown, stop in! You never know what you'll find!

There's so many hidden things here and there that are in plain sight but you can't tell because there's trees and other beautiful things surrounding it. Came here with my husband for a tea event, and the grounds alone were breathtaking and relaxing. There is a trail that you can walk. There's also a gift shop and a pond and it's just also peaceful. Very serene view of mother nature I can see anybody being able to paint at this gorgeous peaceful area. You should definitely go online and see upcoming events. They have whiskey tasting gin tasting tea events if you like tea like I do, and even though I am more of a tequila person, I would definitely come for a whiskey tasting event. The pictures I took do not do it any justice as far as how beautiful the scenery is. When you get a chance, you should definitely come down here and might as well buy a family membership if you have a family so that you can come back more than once.

The man who works there is a veritable font of tribal history, culture, social and Narragansett sacred ceremonial traditions. I had no idea the Nature Lab even existed until I wandered in one day. This is definitely a hidden…read moregem! The Nature Lab is a repository of plants, animals, and minerals, both alive and dead, which was started as a resource for RISD students. They have a pretty amazing collection, and anyone can go in and check it all out. A nonexhaustive list of cool stuff in there: trilobite fossils, live snakes and birds, at least a hundred stuffed animals, a mummified cat head, and hoards of bones and skulls - including real human skeletons. They have a lot of space to draw if that's your thing. My only wish is that more stuff was identified - the material in the lab obviously isn't rigorously curated. It could be a great resource for scientists if it were!

This is the only museum around that is entirely dedicated to the history of the New England Indian…read more Anyone who is even remotely interested in the original inhabitants of New England will find this museum absolutely fascinating. The unassuming museum houses a lot more than just arrowheads (although they do have thousands and thousands of these, of all types, mostly from local sites). They have put together some very educational interpretive displays with dioramas and other display materials that help provide some insight into the lives of these people who lived here for 10,000 years. My favorite displays show the range of artifacts archaeologists have found at specific sites, showing the often crude stone tools used every day by long-ago people. There is so much to see here, this is a museum I will definitely visit again.
