Marietta History Museum; Kennesaw House…read more Sooooo much history in this building. I highly recommend. Not a huge museum so it won't take much of you're time but there is a lot of good stuff to see here. Built as a cotton warehouse by John Glover in 1845, the Kennesaw House is one of Marietta's oldest buildings. On May 1, 1855, Dix Fletcher purchased the warehouse from John Glover for $12,000 and transformed it into a hotel. Fletcher named his hotel the Fletcher House until 1867 when he renamed it the Kennesaw House. It was not until the Civil War that the Kennesaw House gained notoriety and expanded its fame. On April 11, 1862, James Andrews and 18 US soldiers spent the night here on the 2nd floor. The next morning James Andrews and the "Raiders" left the Kennesaw House, boarded a train to Kennesaw, and stole 'The General' when its Confederate crew stopped for breakfast. The purpose of this raid was to help cut the Confederacy into smaller pieces by stealing a Confederate locomotive while destroying bridges and supply lines along the way. The raid was ultimately unsuccessful but the Kennesaw House gained fame as the starting location of the "Great Locomotive Chase." In July of 1864, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman used the house for his headquarters during his "Atlanta Campaign". That November, departing US Calvary started to burn anything that could be of use to the Confederate army. Sherman spared the hotel because Dix Fletcher was a Mason and because his son-in-law, Henry Cole, was a Yankee spy. However, the fourth floor did catch fire as ashes from other burning buildings blew onto the roof. The fourth floor was never rebuilt. During Reconstruction, Dix Fletcher re-emerged the hotel "as a resort destination free from the ice and chill wind of the North and the oppressive heat and relentless bugs of the South." It is now owned by the Downtown Marietta Development Authority, and since 1996 functioned as the Marietta Museum of History.

All are located within a 1/2-mile radius, and 2 are literally within about 200 yards of each other. Our second stop was at Barrington Hall. It is located across Hwy 120 from Bulloch Hall, a bit closer to Roswell Road. They have a small parking lot out front. Like the others, there is no fee here. We again wandered up to the house's front facade (which faces away from the parking lot towards Hwy 120) entered via the front door. The docent on duty was again friendly and just asked for our zip code and how we'd heard about the venue. You are then free to wander the house via whatever route you like. Most rooms have a sign with a 4-digit code. You call a phone number (the same one used at the other 2 houses) and enter successive codes as you proceed. For each code, there is an accompanying description of the room's historical context and of its furnishings. These mansions all seemed to follow the same basic floorplan - a central linear hallway with 2 or 3 rooms off each side and a staircase at the end. This house was a bit smaller than Bulloch Hall, but had slightly more furnishings. This home also had more of a formal garden in the back. If you only had time to tour one house of the 3, I'd still begin with Bulloch Hall. However, this place was nice to visit if you have another 30 - 45 minutes.

Plenty of parking, but the signs to get to the front door could be a bit more clear (there are many doors on this gorgeous home). We entered the wrong door but the gracious woman who is a docent welcomed us warmly! She gave a grand tour of the home with many interesting stories about its former residents. The home is well maintained, plus has some actual furniture from the owners and other items representative of the era. I wish I could recall the woman's name who gave us the tour, she was amazing! How does she recall all this information? Thankful this home has been saved and taken care of-

This was a pleasurable distraction from the busyness of the surrounding commercial area. There was also a nice covered area for observation of the koi pond and waterfall features, which would be great in a mild rain shower. The butterfly tent area sounds amazing, but we were too early for the season. The gardens are set up for educational purposes for children, which is nice. The bad: some areas are in desperate need for weeding, Robert said a large group of volunteers were coming out this weekend to help with weeding. There were many poison oak plants and poison ivy plants in some areas where kids might roam, especially, or adults too. The trails could be marked better, even though maps were available at the main admissions shop and a couple on property. Generally, this seemed newer rather than well established, but it is on its way to a nice gardens area and even now is a great spot to spend a couple of hours or more in nature!

We were staying overnight nearby so we opted to revisit on a weekend when our bank sponsors free admission. We parked in a large shared lot across the street that was about 90% full due to a local farmers' market. We arrived around 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday (they open at 10). My assumption was that we'd spent at most a couple of hours here. However, I was mistaken. My impression is that they have added / exchanged a significant percentage of the works on display over the last few years. There were definitely a lot of works I recalled seeing, but there were also many that were unfamiliar. All have associated plaques with notes (some about the context and some about the artists). I read many of these as I browsed. The artwork is probably 75% paintings and 25% sculptures (percentages vary based on the room / wing you are in). Over the 2 main floors, the galleries included: - a room showing examples of how works depicting the west evolved decade by decade for ~ 2 centuries. - rooms of general western works - themed rooms with subjects like 'cowboys' or 'native peoples' - a room devoted to new acquisitions - a separate 'gallery of the U.S. presidents' that is permanent - a room devoted to traveling exhibits - this one was an artist who painted western scenes (including national parks) with about 90% realism and 10% spiritual / fantasy elements. - a long hallway devoted to sculptures of a wide array of native tribes - a large gallery devoted to modern interpretations - including things like a Van Gogh inspired painting of a bull rider, some pop-art by Warhol, etc. - a room devoted mostly to military work - the burning of Atlanta, the battle of the Alamo, etc. We spent over 3.5 hours here and left mostly as we were getting tired. I think I covered most of the museum, but there were parts near the end where I spent less time. The museum also had a temporary photo exhibit in the basement area, as well as a cafe and gift shop. There grounds feature an array of larger sculptures, but it was in the upper 90s that day so we didn't linger outside. I recall liking this museum when I came here previously, but I enjoyed it even more on this most recent visit. I'll definitely try to return again.
