Since this was my first viewing of a Glockenspiel, I waited the 20 minutes before the show and found it fairly entertaining -- perhaps better seen on television on one of those travel DVD's so you can see the detail up close. The real gem of Marienplatz is just walking in the square and soaking in the historic beauty of the old town hall. The building itself has so much detail...they just don't build 'em like that anymore. Definitely a worthwhile stop on your walking tour through Munich. read more

This is the first time I have reviewed an "area", that really isn't a business itself. As a tourist this is the place to go in Munich. In almost any postcard or tourist book of Munich, you will definitely see the Glockenspiel located here. The clock doesn't play regularly. I don't know exactly when it runs. It never did when I was there. Even if you didn't want to go to Marienplatz, I think you would at least walk through it once or twice in a day walking through the "old town" of Munich. I kept finding myself looking back up at the clock during the day. :) This area has a bit of something for everyone, lost of stores, food, and people. Some of the stores are so pretty that I didn't want to step inside. Definitely in this section you will find many high end boutiques. read more

Simply amazing and a history buff's dream. I was so happy I could finally put my History degree to use being able to explain to confused teenage, American tourists the amazing historical significance of just about every corner when it came to the rise of Hitler (specialized in WWII, and please don't ask what I've used it for since then). The area is extremely walkable, beautiful and the people are so nice. A sweet couple even invited my German boyfriend and I to play bocce ball. The only downside were the weird Dutch people who were obsessed with my weave while we were hanging in the park. Seriously. I know my hair looked beautiful, but who in the hell touches other people's hair without permission?! Plus, they kept starring. It was all sorts of creepy. read more

There is no better place to be to experience downtown Munich. Marienplatz is the center for action. Great place to watch the glockenspiel and street performers. It is also a place to people watch. This is also a place where people perform demonstrations. Be aware of pickpockets. This is accessible to several subway and bus lines. Expect a big crowd each time. read more

GREAT HISTORIC BUILDINGS to take pictures of. Good restaurants are near by like the Hard Rock Cafe and Hofbräuhaus. Shopping is located right in the center. Check the Ferrari Store out too. The U-Bahn stops here also. read more

Central plaza in Munich surrounded by the "New" Town Hall with its Gothic revival architecture complete with Glockenspiel and also the Old Town Hall, St Peter's Church, and Munich's "Dom," the Frauenkirche. Cafes with outdoor seating, lots of pedestrians, even a good amount of shopping. If you are in Munich, naturally you will find yourself here. read more

Marienplatz is electrifying! I'm a sucker for big, crowded city squares and Marienplatz doesn't disappoint. Reminds me of Trafalgar Square. I kept coming back over and over. For the Gluewein, for the Xmas markets, for the street food, or just for people watching. Oh, there's also the glockenspiel :-) read more

Great location for shopping and finding great places to eat. You can easily get lost in the area but in a way that makes it more fun because you find more places to shop and eat. Also there are beautiful churches to view or attend in this area. read more

Marienplatz is a beautiful town square at the center of a big shopping area but count me among one of the people who was unimpressed after seeing the Glockenspiel in action. Maybe it's the New Yorker in me, but it seems like a rather boring spectacle and a fantastic opportunity for pickpockets. The building that houses the Glockenspiel is beautiful though and the square is a nice starting point if you want to visit the nearby landmarks that show off all the different movements in art and architecture that comprise the city of Munich. read more

I enjoy shopping here, seeing the architecture and taking friends here when they visit. It's central to most things, easy place to meet-up to. I wouldn't eat directly on Marienplatz but there are great little alleyways to wonder down to and explore. read more

This is a jewel of a public space and my spirit is tugged here from afar. People watching, cafes, restaurants, food stalls, produce stands. All of that and it is steps away from the Viktualienmarkt for more of all of that. The Rathaus is so beautiful and severe looking. It is one of my favorite buildings in all the world. It is amazing in the rain, the sun and the fog. At day and at night. read more

Marienplatz is quite literally the city center in Muenchen. It's beautiful, with gorgeous architecture and shops, bustling with people, and the transportation hub of the city. From here you can bus, tram or train anywhere in the city. Even though it's touristy, definitely come and see all the beautiful buildings and cultural attractions. read more

You have to stop and see the stunning Marienplatz when you are in Munich! This beautiful square is the epicenter of old town activity. It is also abuzz with activity during the holidays. Three weeks before Christmas, the Christmas Market, also known as the Christkindlmarkt, opens with booths selling holiday food, beverages, and local artisan items. The Marienplatz has been the city's main square since 1158. The Glickenspiel is located in the tower of the new city hall. The chiming clock tower entertains with 43 bells and quaint dancing figures. The Mariensaule is the column located on the Matienplatz. It was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation. The Gothic Revival-style New City Hall (built in 1874) is located in the north side of the Marienplatz and the Old City Hall is on the east side. Train station, shopping, restaurants, and beer gardens are close to the square. read more

The hub of Munich. It's where the past meets the present - you can literally see it in the architecture, the old buildings reflected in the glass of the new. The shopping is great, the food is great, it's very truly German and there's a lot of history seeping through this area. Don't miss exploring the churches, they're well worth a look! read more

MarienPlatz was our go-to for the ChristmasMarkt. We had a lot of fun ice skating, drinking gluhwein, eating, shopping and just all around family time. The day after Christmas, it was mildly crowded, but still worth visiting. The architecture is amazing and the general feel is just fun. read more

Nice square area right in the middle of the old part of Munich. The Marienplatz is also called Mary's Square & is the central square of Munich. It's been like this for many, many decades. This place is so beautiful, and is caled the heart of Munich. Yes, it can get incredibly crowded, but its worth coming to check out. read more

A focal point for Munich history since the Middle Ages - What I love most about Europe are its town squares and the significance they hold for each city/town. The Glockenspiel in the tower of the new city hall and the Mariensäule are significant landmarks within the square. It's the starting point for the main pedestrian zone. Got to be one of the friendliest, neatest places to visit in Munich. Vibrant, shops, restaurants, people. Check out the glockenspiel, three times per day, about 10 to 15 minutes long. read more
