The Rathaus-Glockenspiel show is 10-15 minutes and it's quite interesting but you better be from a good vantage point because well it gets crowded. Munich's central city square "Marienplatz" is smaller in comparison to other major European cities, but its still very beautiful and interesting, though very touristy, but all central squares are. The whimsical Rathaus Glockenspiel mechanical clock tower makes it great though...not too exciting, but worth watching at least once in your life time. The Munich Glockenspiel recounts a royal wedding, jousting tournament and dance. At 11am and noon (and 5pm between March and October). The show lasts about 15 minutes and concludes with the golden bird up the top emerging and chirping three times. Not Disney, but still neat. read more

Marienplatz is the town square in the heart of Munich. Tourists, like myself, flock here to see the Rathaus Glockenspiel. Musical chimes play tunes while the mechanical contraption reenacts 16th century events: the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine, a jousting match, and a celebratory dance. Marienplatz appears to be a common staging point for guided tours of the surrounding area. Cafes and shops line the perimeter of the square. At the cafes, people enjoy their morning cup of coffee, tea, or glass of beer. Souvenirs like beer steins, cuckoo clocks, traditional Bavarian clothing, t-shirts, etc. are very easy to come by at the various shops in the immediate area surrounding the square. An S-Bahn and U-Bahn station underground enables convenient transportation. Many tourist attractions are a short walk away: Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt, Alois Dallmayr, etc. It's nearly impossible to be a tourist in Munich and not find yourself walking through Marienplatz a number of times during your visit. read more

You can't visit Munich without a stop in Marienplatz. Over a weekend, I ended up here more times than I can count -- to catch the metro, to look at the sites, or just passing through. It's a beautiful area no matter the time of day, but also obviously very crowded. If you're a fan of architecture, you'll LOVE it here. I honestly don't have much else to say. It's a cool area, albeit touristy...but whatever. If you're in town for Oktoberfest, you'd be remiss to skip over this slice of pretty history. read more

I think I practically live in Marienplatz whenever I spend my time in Munich. Marienplatz is the city centre of Munich. It is touristy, the main shopping central, and packed with endless array fascinating history. Marienplatz is special, for obvious reasons. During winter season the city is completely decorated in holiday festivities where several themed Christkindlmarkt are stationed with speciality foods and entertainment, and people of all ages get together to celebrate the fun. Most visitors probably come to Marienplatz for shopping, sightseeing, or for a bit of history, but the old cobblestone streets and some of the old architecture are enough reasons to why visiting Marienplatz is a must on anyone's must-visit bucket list. The must-see: Neus Rathaus (new town hall): here is the amusing thing about the Neus Rathaus; it looks much older than the Alte Rathaus. Gather around the appropriate times for the Glockenspiel; you will know when you see a large crowd gathered before the Neus Rathaus. Viktualenmarkt: I can spend endless days at the daily food market of Munich. This is the original farmer's market for the people here and it is most popular of gourmet treats. The shops have typical farmer's market treats such as sweets, jams, wine, and some special trinkets. This is a great place to get a small bite of everything if you desire. Viktualenmarkt can be found just at the entrance and to the right of the Alte Rathaus. Kirchen (churches): there are several baroque style churches with a mass amount of history; some kirchen are built as early as 1500! The Marienplatz was very close to our Airbnb and lucky for us is the main center for the Christmas markets! We arrived later in Munich so we hopped over to grab a bite and see the market. The Christmas market was very impressive, rows of vendors, many different mulled wine spots and all sorts of food booths. There are a lot of vegetarian options at the food spots, a few vegan. The mulled wine is delicious, you pay a deposit for the cup and are given that back once it's returned. We got to experience a Christmas parade and see KRAMPUS (I was hoping to see Krampus) it was very exciting. On our way out we heard a band playing with a large crowd so we checked it out, the band was hilarious and so fun, they provided a lot of entertainment. The architecture is stunning, hearing the historic clock go off was fun, it was so beautiful to experience during the day and at night. The markets don't go until past 8-9PM and are open on Sunday! The Marienplatz is the main train station, too, that was very useful for our way out of Munich. This is the city center of Munich, very touristy and historic. read more

C) a daily attraction commemorating the marriage of Duke Wilheim V and dancers who danced during a plague to keep everyone's spirits up. D) the proper way to order a round of beers at a beer garden. Answer: C I was magnetically drawn to the Marienplatz every day. Its Gothic architecture will force you to take countless pictures from every angle (the best vantage point is from Alter Peter), you can reach any attraction since it's centrally based, there are plenty of stores/restaurants around it, and you can literally feel Munich's pulse/lifeblood. A must visit in Munich, we actually cut our slumber short and still under ungodly jet lag, made our way to Marienplatz, just to see the Glockenspiel at work, it only comes to life once or twice a day, so naturally we didn't want to miss this event. We spend a good portion of the early afternoon around the plaza, people watching and street performances kept us quite entertained, the location is central enough that you can do a lot of sightseeing and always come back to the square to see what's happening. This place is like the Times Square of Munich...only no naked cowboys or people dressed like Elmo. Also not a lot of neon or anything. But they have a Glockenspiel, which is even more awesome! I found myself here time and time again when I was in Munich. It seems like such a Central Place that it was a great place to meet people. It was always bustling and from the plaza itself you can get to a variety of shopping and eating areas. There's a huge transit hub here as well, so you can connect to a variety of trains. I think sometimes things get a bad rap for being "too touristy". We had an 8 hour layover on our way back from Istanbul to Chicago, and were lucky to spend that time in Munich. It was a quick ride by train to the Marienplatz. My mother and I wanted to see what everyone wants to see: the glockenspiel clock. We were lucky to get there before it started so we didn't have to wait around or worry about the time to come back another hour. I found it charming and enchanting, which is one of many emotions I think you're supposed to feel whilst traveling! After that finished, we wandered around a few blocks away to find some souvenir shops. I also stopped by the post office nearby so that I could get stamps for the post cards I purchased (of course, I forgot to send them, but luckily one of the duty free stores in the airport too them to send). All this is to say that while there is the clock there, you can wander around and peek into some of the shops as well. read more

Every time I visit to Munich, I like to make a visit to Marienplatz. I really like it here. This place is not only full of historical and cultural building, it is also popular place to hang around. From here you can see the Neues Rathaus (New city hall), The building itself simply amazing, you can see all the works though time all on the wall. This is Mariensäule and Fischbrunnen just right in front as well. In the middle of the Rathaus, you could see Das Glockenspiel. It held 16 different figures and 43 bells. I remember the first time when I saw the show from Das Glockenspiel, it was impressive. I enjoyed every moment of this. It usually plays on 11 and 12 o'clock. From March to October they also play additionally at 17 o'clock. At night, it will the show starts every night 21 o'clock. It isn't big show, but it does make the place much more colorful. Beside the historical part, this is also a hot spot to hang out for locals and tourists in Munich. Since the shopping street is also located it right here. There are many fancy and famous brand around, also some really cool shops for tourist. Frauenkirche, Alois Dallmayr, St. Micheal Church, Viktualienmarkt and so on are also really close by. If you like to do some shopping or simply just hang around, this could be the great place for that. Of course, it also doesn't lack of great restaurants and cafés. It also got S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations, it made it really easy to reach. Although it is always crowed here, it is definitely one of place to be in Munich. Love it! The glockenspiel is in the center and you have to see it. Not because its such a sight but its famous and you gotta go. It plays three times a day and lasts about ten minutes. It's crowed but we still had the stroller with no issues. There are the typical shops and chains. Everything is condensed so you can get through in an afternoon. Duck into as many churches as you can. There's a couple huge ones that are breathtaking and a lot of small ones that would surprise you. The artistry is amazing. read more

An open square with old buildings. Come here to see the Rathaus, Glockenspiel and a statue of Juliet. There's a fountain, a market, lots of restaurants, cafes and businesses nearby. If you like old buildings and mind-blowing architecture as much as I do, you need to come here. There are so many things to see around here. Know the drill: open spaces, big crowd, tourists not paying attention = lots of pick pockets. Tourists would be busy watching the Glockenspiel, pick pockets are busy taking their money. Although Germany isn't as bad as Spain, Italy or France when it comes to gypsy and pick pocket population, it doesn't hurt to be aware. A few feet away is the original Hofbrauhaus. Stopped here in the end of August for an overnight visit. There is a lot of activity and got to view the inside of the churches. If you're into architecture, this is a great place to go. Waited for the hour in the hopes that the clock would ring and have a show, but that didn't happen. Plenty of places to eat in the area. We had kids, but they weren't old enough to appreciate the sites. Think this is a better place to go when the kids are in junior high school. read more

This was the from what I could tell on my short stay in Munich the equivalent of the the center of town for tourists visiting Munich, I could be wrong, but it was definitely the hub for all activity (aside from the English Garden and the Oktoberfest grounds). Easily accessible via transit on the U bahn and the S bahn, and a quick walk from most other popular spots in town, Marienplatz had no shortage of restaurants, tourist information booths, shopping and of course tourist attractions (GlockenSchpiele, Church towers, toy museum, etc). We made a few stops in Marienplatz over the two weekends we were in Munich. As a tourist exploring the city, it's a "must see." Neues Rathaus (don't worry...not that new at all!), Altes Rathaus, St Peter's, people watching & plenty of food & beer. There are a few ice cream places near by, so a few times I just got a kugel and people watched. However, this is not just a tourist spot; Marienplatz is used for city festivals/fairs as well as a protest zone (we saw an Afghanistan/Iraq war protest as well as a eco fair during our trip). Is it worth seeing? Yes, but it's not a full day. read more

A fellow photo-loving friend of mine and I went to Munich for a photo field trip. We were NOT disappointed. The highlight was definitely the Neues Rathaus at the Marienplatz, but to be honest, there is so much to do in and around the Marienplatz that even if you don't like big, tall, cool looking buildings you'll be happy. If you prefer to shop, there are TONS of stores including some very high end boutiques. Eating is covered too. We literally would walk and shoot for a couple hours, then stop and eat. We never ate at the same place twice, nor did we eat the same thing twice! It's rich with history, beautiful buildings and interesting people who didn't mind getting their photos taken. Everyone was very friendly considering our poor German skills and most people spoke English well enough that between bad German and bad English, we figured out what we needed to. The ONLY downside, which is to be expected, is that the Marienplatz is busy. Very, very, very busy. And it doesn't really stop being busy. So if you are going for photo-ops, be prepared to get lots of people in your pictures or shoot everything above 6'... read more

This place is so gorgeous, and is right in the heart of Munich. This is where both town halls are, along with other touristy sites such as the Hofbräuhaus. It can be incredibly crowded, yes, but it is in the centre of the city so it is to be expected. There are also lots of shops around, such as butcher shops and souvenir places. If you are here, be sure to check out the statue of Mary, right by the new town hall. It is an iconic piece of Munich. read more
