Even better, the playground structures are interesting and in great shape. Sure, the ground is mostly sand, but there are a few areas off to the side with regular dirt/grass or wood chips. The benches are also about 80% usable, which might be a record for Berlin. The park as a whole has several different paths, some quieter than others, and lots of little surprises of nature around every corner - a pond, a Swiss restaurant, a rose garden, an amphitheater (sadly one of the more notable spots of graffiti is here). The park is along the Teltow Canal as well, so connects directly to other green spaces. The surrounding neighborhood has many of smaller restaurants and ice cream stands.

We decided to take a little break from touristing around Berlin to read our books in Viktoriapark! And it turned out to be one of my favorite places we explored on our short trip to Berlin! Viktoriapark opened in 1894 and contains a famous Berlin landmark - a cast iron monument dedicated by King Frederick William III of Prussia to the liberation wars fought at the end of the War of the Sixth coalition against France in the course of the Napoleonic Wars. The park also contains a beautiful (but totally artificial) waterfall that begins at the foot of the monument and continues down the hillside to the intersection of Grossbeerenstrasse and Kreuzbergstrasse. We walked along the paths running parallel to the waterfall to the top where the monument is - and stopped several times to take pictures of the beautiful park. After we reached the top, we walked to the open field area just off the monument where hundreds of people were reading, playing with dogs, playing Frisbee, drinking, smoking, etc. It definitely seemed like a place where young locals spend time on the weekend! The park is beautiful! Definitely worth exploring - and I found relaxing and reading my book to be the perfect break from touristing around the city! I highly recommend exploring the park if you're looking for a relaxing break from being a tourist!!

And that's apparently just one of three playgrounds here at Britzer Garten, a huge suburban park that's got a lake, a little train, plentiful benches and flower gardens, several snack stands and at least one very nice looking cafe on the small lake. This made a very fun outing for our crew of young European travelers (i.e., kids 4-8) who had enjoyed all the sightseeing but were also ready for a good place to just run around with the local kids. If you're going from downtown Berlin: it's only 20 minutes or so on the U-6 to Alt-Mariendorf, but you will then definitely want to take the bus to one of the park entrances. It's only a 5-10 minute bus ride -- and pretty easy to figure out once you arrive at Alt-Mariendorf -- but the distance is further than it looks on a map... and you don't want to use all your little people's energy just walking down a semi-busy street. Also, check out the map on the park's website before you go. I'd suggest aiming for one of the SW entrances (bus 179 as of this week), which are adjacent to the playground our kids enjoyed. (We entered from the North and bus 181, and there is not much up there other than flowers). Overall the park is plenty close that it's not a big deal getting there, but far enough that I'd consider it at least a half-day outing.
