Our spirits were buoyed by owners, Shari & Paul Cunningham, whose wonderful property includes a view of the harbor in Round Pond, perennial gardens, old stone walls, and adjacent forests. We were made to feel right at home in the restored historic (1700's era) farmhouse, with its common rooms for reading, visiting, dining, and relaxing downstairs, as well as its five beautifully decorated guest bedrooms upstairs. Shari is an outstanding cook, serving hearty, nutritious, artfully presented breakfasts every morning. She incorporates fresh eggs from her flock of lively hens whose happy clucking can be heard throughout the day. We look forward to our next trip when we can once again savor the scrumptious frittatas, homemade blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, and delicious fruit cups at the dining room's table that looks over the sloping backyard fields and the ocean beyond. Shari was willing to accommodate our request for specific dietary needs. At the top of your "Midcoast Maine Must Do" list should be a stay with Shari and Paul at The Chamberlain House.

My key lime pie was delicious. The coconut really added to the dish. My son devoured his pub burger and had no complaints. My husband said his calamari and fish tacos were ok. The heirloom tomato salad was the best. The arugula has a nice taste to it along with the layer of ricotta cheese under it all. The flavors really blended well with this dish. Buildings need to be maintained. Our building had paint peeling off the railings and possible carpenter ant infestation in the wall by building Bluebird. 3. Breakfast service.....I like water in the morning....each day I had to search out and ask the waitress to refill my glass. 4. Nobody told me at check-in that the room would only be cleaned every three days.....we were only there four days. 5. Food.....eggs Benedict was spicy and not pleasant to the eye.....it had a vinegar taste......primavera at dinner was mediocre. Thick and pasty. We will not return.

The noise between rooms is very difficult to ignore. The WiFi was spotty also And this will sound crazy but the building rocked when couples were engaged in certain activities in their rooms. Go to impress parents or similar if you are a college student. For quality and price, based on our experience, would not do again. Overcooked eggs, grudging portions, mix and match plateware that just confounds (bacon and eggs in a bowl - really? but only for one person in the party?). The menu is also misleading. The fabled "hash of the day" turned out to be just a pile of ordinary unremarkable overcooked and unseasoned home fries. The same side everyone else had for free, but costing some part of the wallet-stretching $21 in the context of the all-in "165" breakfast - two overcooked over-easy eggs (no seasoning), a slice of thin sourdough bread cut in two, a pile of indifferent home fries and two of the smallest pieces of bacon you can imagine. $8-12 in any self-respecting diner in the country, and typically made with far more care and flavor. When asked how plain ordinary home fries were a "hash of the day" when they were also unmentioned sides for other dishes, the waitress shrugged and said "it's a KIND of hash. We call that hash here." Touche. Should have asked more questions. And the toast is a single piece of seemingly storebought sourdough bread cut in half (no evidence here, just disappointment being expressed). No substitution, no extras. Pretty much no butter, either. Another member of the party had the blueberry pancakes, Thick and heavy, and unremarkable, once again. Any diner does it better - for half the price. Timing was a serious issue too. The dining room was somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 full. 3-4 tables in other words. Still took well over 45 minutes to get food. Watched 2 pairs of other diners come, order, eat, pay and leave as we waited, Food came cool with no explanation or apology for the long wait. Small complaints perhaps, but at this price, they are making bold claims and utterly failing to match up. Breakfast should be a lay-up for places like this. The ingredients cost almost nothing and the work involved is strictly short-order, simple, fast-turn work in a relatively uncrowded dining room. No reason to go light on ingredients or on flavors. Breakfast is an easy meal to wow in aplace like this, and New England has traditions to uphold - and yet the establishment clearly did not see the point in putting in the effort to match their prices, decor, or location. The capper was watching the tables cleared by a surly teenager in stained board shorts and stained tshirt and sneakers with unwashed hair in a beautiful dining room. The young man clomped in and would withdraw 1-2 plates at a time before stomping out, taking over ten minutes to clear a single table. Overpriced and under-quality. It's for tourists. Beautiful building, though.

So that is four. That leaves a pull out sofa in the main room. AND there is only ONE BATHROOM. The main bedroom bed did not have a frame. In fact, none of the beds had bed frames and there is no art on any of the walls, so the pictures on the website are not accurate. The closet door was completely missing in one bedroom. There was a nasty red stain on the carpet in the big bedroom. There was a broken tie rack in one closet. The kitchen looks like it was last renovated in the late 1980s. The rear entrance does not lock securely, the back door has a note on it on how to lift the handle to get the bolt to lock. The kitchen had a table with only two chairs. So you and your guests will not be eating together. There were three other mismatched chairs scattered around the unit, and none of those were the right height for the kitchen table. In the living room there was a dehumidifier grinding along. There seems to be a drainage issue with the whole complex. The front window by the front door was missing a curtain. Another curtain wasn't hung properly. Neither television worked properly, as the internet connection kept glitching. There was a scarred desk in the living room. The showerhead in the one bathroom needs to be replaced. I did not find this townhouse adequate for adults. I give three stars because of the building and grounds, very pretty, and within walking distance to downtown.
