In a small town, it's always tough to tell if a restaurant is actually good or just better than other restaurants in the area. Maria's is the former - amazing compared to anywhere!! The menu here is massive with lots of traditional and contemporary favorites. My daughter generally complains the entire time when we're at Mexican because she only eats chicken nuggets. However, she accidentally ordered a breaded chicken breast and fries instead of nuggets and fell in love! She ate the entire plate, which was massive, raving the whole time about how good it was! My husband's shrimp dish was great, with large shrimp in a really tasty sauce. My chicken enchiladas were also very good. The beans and rice were incredible and full of flavor. Fast, friendly service make this a must-stop if you're in the area - or worth the trip if you're in Sun Prairie!

    Yum!

A friend told me about Maria's in Marshall and so recently I decided to check it out with a friend. It did not disappoint. The food was delish. The ambiance was fun and inviting. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. I will be back soon!

We've been here multiple times since this restaurant's recent opening and have not been disappointed. The prices are mid range and the portions are generous. The staff is always pleasant and provide prompt service. And with most restaurants in area being closed on Mondays, it's nice that this one is open.

Entrance, and the view of the colorful artwork! N

She had her usual, a combo plate, and she was happy with that as always Would strongly recommend this place for anybody who is on the east side of Madison and has a desire for tasty, hot (temperature) Mexican food.

Chucked it up to it being busy and they were tired. No worries. We were sat by kitchen so every server no matter what, passed our table. And pass by they did. All not making eye contact or even asking if we'd like water. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for our own server to finally come. When he did he apologized and took our drink order. Left to make them. When he brought back, which granted that part was kind a quick, he took our food order. We waited 35 minutes for our food. Drinks were almost gone. All the servers once again passed by us. Never checked on us or anything. And again, Wouldn't make eye contact. When the food finally did arrive. Two of the dinners were ice cold and looked like slop. Like I literally went to grab one of the nachos and it was so soggy it was drippy some type of watery goo. The other two dinners were lukewarm at best. Uneditable. And definitely done deliberately. As I watched my waiter and other servers attend other tables quickly after they were seated. Even offer them water. Anyway, Tried to find someone and a waitress at the bar made eye contact with me and then quickly turned around and ignored me. Took another gentleman, not our waiter, coming out the back to ask if we needed anything. Probably because at this point, the birthday girl started crying and he noticed something. Kudos to him. The only decent person that night. I said no, that I refuse to pay for the food and I wanted my check. He went to finally find our waiter to bring him back so I could again tell him. The joke being he even walked over to my table wearing an oven mitt. So hey someone there probably got a hot meal. He took the food off my check and tried to smooth everything over with a "fist bump". I did as he and his employees did to me, turned around and grab my purse. The whole situation was ridiculous. Not sure why they felt the need to be rude. But I won't be going back. I'd advise against anyone else going as well. Good luck.

El Alegre is located in a small modern strip of shops, with a party center they run next door. The restaurant is medium sized with a nice bar in the corner by the kitchen. The room is sleek and modern with black walls and tables, wood chairs and floors, and a colorful neon strip around the ceiling. Service was attentive without being intrusive. The menu is two sided and manages to have a nice variety without being overstuffed. I ended up ordering the Camarones a la Diabla, as someone who loves spicy shrimp it sounded great. A bit of a wait for the food, but the place was busy with the dining room almost full including a couple of larger tables. The chips and salsa was ok, but nothing special but provided a nice prelude while I waited for the meal. The meal came out nicely presented on a square white plate, which set off the colorful meal. The shrimp were nice sized, plump and well cooked; the sauce was excellent, not overly spicey, but instead complex and delicious with an interesting mix of flavors, it seemed to be similar to a mole instead of just a hot sauce. The refried beans and spanish rice were both good and the guacamole, sour cream and small salad was a nice compliment to the meal. The flour tortillas were very good, freshly griddled and fresh. I was very impressed with El Alegre, the decor is a nice change from most Mexican restaurants. I was very impressed with their version of Camarones a la Diabla, usually it is served with a fairly simple hot sauce, here they created a wonderful and complex sauce that perfectly complimented the shrimp and provided a true treat. If you are in the area and looking for some great Mexican food El Alegre is well worth a visit. If the rest of the menu is anything like my meal it is a great flavorful interpretation of Mexican food.

Of course there was a Taco Bell close to the exit from I-90, but that wasn't going to cut it. So, we found El Alegre about two miles into town. The place was packed Well, we had a very good meal with happy service. A big sign on the wall in the kitchen said "work hard and be nice to people ". Gotta love that. So we were coming South on I-90 and remembered El Alegre. Being vegetarian, I usually find plenty of options in a Mexican restaurant (and also Chinese and Italian). This menu had a vegetarian section with about six or seven choices, but I looked over the rest of the very large menu and found several versions of Chile Relleño. I've never seen anything but the one stuffed with cheese anywhere else. Well, they had a version stuffed with vegetables! I had to try it. I am so glad I did. It was delicious and a very generous portion served with rice and beans that rose above the standard usually experienced. My wife had a shrimp dish that I sampled and loved. She said the margaritas were also excellent. So, if you find yourself on I-90, you won't regret driving a couple miles off the highway to find El Alegre!
