Once a year he was sent on a mission: obtaining three boxes filled with kue cucur, a cookie made of fried rice flour mixed with palm sugar. Thick in the middle, thin at the edges. A snack with the looks of an UFO. Not exactly the most beautiful cookie on earth, but its taste and smell is divine, especially when it's warm: exotic cinnamon flavor. The fact that it wasn't available in shops, but could only be bought 'illegally' at the home of an old Moluccan lady added to the flavour of the kue cucur. Last week I found out that one of my favorite takeaways and restaurants, Toko Bandung, was selling THE cookie of my youth. I stared for minutes at the FB-picture where I saw three cookies in a row with a bit of liquid gula djawa on top. Saturday I was reunited with my 'elementary school sweet hearts'. A trip down memory lane. A real good one.

You also have the option to have it heated and eat it at their table. There's only one table but from what we saw, most if not all patrons just take it to go. We was only about 15 euros between two of us with a drink. Definitely a more affordable option to eat here in Amsterdam. Employees are nice and will explain to your all the options. If you pick veggies only, you get more choices.

Among the rice and noodles, I was surprised to see that they also offer lontong. I got the Nasi Rames menu (€7.70) which comes with white rice, three vegetable dishes, two meat types, and an egg. My choices were terong blado (eggplant and chilies), tumis kacang panjang (spicy tempe and greenbeans), oerap (salad of coconut and bean sprouts), and daging bali (Balinese style beef). I also asked for nasi kuning (rice cooked in coconut milk and turmeric) instead of white rice and the lady behind the counter was happy to substitute for a small fee which I don't remember but I was fine with the price. Everything was properly spicy, and they do warn you if you're faint of heart. The food tastes like it should, except I think the daging bali would be spicier in Bali. Delicious authentic Indonesian food! A plastic bag costs a few cents so be smart and bring your own or else carry the box in your hands. On your way out, you can also pick up a few essentials in their small grocery corner like fried anchovies or Kecap Manis. They also have some traditional cakes and fried snacks in the case by the entrance. Just don't expect to sit down here because there is only one table.

We were able to indicate our preferences: satay and randang sauces for us! For the starter, we had shrimp egg rolls and pork satay skewers. Great satay and LOTS of it! As the main courses got there, we realized the HIGH quality of the restaurant: we were able to discover 12 different types of dishes (meats with sauces + vegetarian dishes). All very different and DELICIOUS. Our favorite were the chicken and the beef randang. Rice cooked in coconut cream is served on the side as well as prawn crackers. The servers - from the same family - know their stuff. They are very attentive and even funny. Everything is HOMEMADE, YES, the prawn crackers too! For dessert, we asked for the typical traditional Indonesian cake: spekkoek. Not gonna insist again that it was homemade but you could taste the freshness! Two different pieces are served with a coffee or tea, as you prefer and whipped cream. At the end of the meal, the servers invited us to visit their backyard! 45 minutes by foot to reach this restaurant outside of the center, but well worth-it! Congratulations to the chef and the whole sweet team!
