I guess they're mostly 'fakirs', hyuk! I am not Polish so I cannot spell or pronounce things, but I think the owner/maker is called Miertek. Anyway you slice it, this is the guy to come to if you want locally produce cured/smoked meats and sausages. His fatty hungarian is the winter bomb, and the roasted bacon (that's right, ROASTED BACON) is a gift from the gods of meat preparation. I suggest that you peruse and randomly choose what looks appealing your first time. There is sooo much, you WILL be back. This guy is the sausage man for Calgary. Regarding his cuts of meat, I have only done his pork tenderloin -- it was exactly what I wanted. They also offer lots of other Polish things. Their fresh sauerkraut and pickles are better than almost anywhere else (Jan's gives him a run though), his smoked mackerel is as good as Jan's, and his scratch perogie selection is a cut above -- avoid the sauerkraut ones, they don't freeze as well as the others (sauerkraut perogies are best fresh). Lots of canned goods, spices, sweets, preserves et cetera. Just remember -- this is THE sausage guy. Closed Mondays, go to Bon-Ton then. Only then. Or wait for Miertek to open tuesday...

It was pretty disappointing, considering how Airdrie Wok has a great buffet and is really clean. As we got to the restaurant, we walked through the front glass door, and went through the right-hand door ... into the lounge. We backed out, and went through the left-hand side into the narrow entrance of the restaurant. We were greeted, and told to take a seat wherever we liked. The restaurant was empty at 6pm on a Friday night except us, and one other family - others straggled in as our meal went on, but it remained very quiet. We took our seats, and were given some water. We then sat for about 5 minutes before anyone asked us if we would like the buffet or menus - we decided we'd give the buffet a try. Fairly typical Chinese buffet was offered, including the usual wonton soup, rice, noodles, sauced and deep-fried fare. The deep-fried foods were all over-doughy and a bit oily, as though the deep-frier wasn't hot or clean enough. The pork fat on the dry ribs was incredibly strong, and the veggies were over-cooked to the point of being mushy. Most of the food could easily have been sitting on the buffet since the lunch buffet was put out, judging by it's freshness. The highlights, however, were the simple wonton soup and the chicken skewers that seemed to be curried - the rest I could have quite easily left on my plate. Dessert options were minimal - the traditional yellow cookies served on buffets, and a bucket of strawberry ice cream was left in the buffet freezer... I passed on dessert. Despite the less-than-stellar meal, the staff was polite and quick with clearing plates and refilling water glasses. The prices were affordable ($9.99 lunch buffet and $12.99 dinner buffet), and we got fortune cookies to go. My fortune: "One good turn deserves another.." Consider this review a "good turn" - unless you're starving and unable to get to the next closest restaurant, I'd pass on this experience. Check out Airdrie Wok or Jen's Vietnamese on Main Street (West Airdrie) for some much more appealing Asian-inspired fare.
