Il nous a même dit : " Vous devriez avoir honte, c'est le Ramadan ", simplement parce que nous ne voulions pas acheter des fraises abîmées. À un moment, il est venu brusquement et a pris la boîte de fraises directement du chariot de mon amie avec force et est parti avec en criant. C'était très humiliant. C'est la dernière fois que moi et mon amie venons dans ce magasin, alors que j'étais une cliente régulière.

They've got a large eat-in area with tagines (I tried chicken with mushrooms in a cream sauce), rice, pizzas, and various kinds of fried seafood. On another side is a giant bakery line with breads, then specialty square pizza slices, then probably 75 kinds of pastries in unreal shapes and configurations. The pizza I tried was unbelievable, and it wasn't even heated. Easily in the top 5 places I've ever tried. So was the (I think) white-chocolate horn filled with pistachios. Then, I remembered the next day reading a long time ago that most bakeries in France actually are run by Algerians. The Algerians must be the best bakers on the planet, and this place is a must-visit - also for groceries, they had a lot of things you can't find anywhere in the U.S.

The guy who manages the meats asked what my plans for the meat were and when I told him it was for sausage he had plenty of helpful advice. There were lot's of pork shoulders to pick from, so no waiting 24 to 48hrs like with some butchers and they will even ground up the meat for you if you ask saving you that first step. Can't see myself going anywhere else from now on.. Now that summer is coming fast I'm looking forward to buying there again so I can make some pulled pork and bratwurst sausages.

Maxi is way cheaper, so we will stick with them, unless we absolutely have to go here for whatever reason.

I found this specific Maxi to stand out compared to the others I've been to, namely the one on papineau. They had clear distancing measures in place. For example there was tape 1 meter apart outside for people to line up while distancing. Once inside we were promptly given purel and upon check out the staff worked in teams to get people out as quickly as possible. All tills were open and they created a system to ensure people werent standing too close to each other. The staff was very cautious while still being helpful.

They have 99c baguette (fresh daily) and nice white corn tortillas, too. Pistilli always has the basics (for us, that includes soy milk), good prices on produce, and good-quality meat and fish. If you don't see what you're looking for at the butcher's counter, just ask. As with most of the smaller (and some of the larger) grocery stores in Montreal, much of the produce is shrink-wrapped and/or on styrofoam trays. I understand that helps keep food fresh longer, reducing wasted food, but I would prefer less plastic. My personal Montreal pet peeve, and Pistilli is not the worst offender in this area. All in all, I'm glad that this store is close to home. One or both of us is there every week.
