Came to the Bastille Market to try one of the rotisserie chickens from here. I don't remember the name of the exact place, but it was the last bird I consumed in France. My swan song from a disappointing trip in the bird department. Off the eye test, it doesn't get much better. The beautiful sight of tissi's rotating in front of a fire breathing oven, potatoes in the tray below collecting the chicken juices as they fell, had me ready to run around the Bastille plaza yelling "LE MOUVEMENT!!". I thought this was going to be my first high level bird in the City of Light. Much to my chagrin, the one I got was just lukewarm. I was ready for my fingerprints to be fully burned off. There was so much potential here, but as always, I have to judge what's in front of me. If I don't have my integrity I have nothing. It landed at an 8.1/10 on the restaurant scale which is good, but if it was hot it could have been up there with the greats in the rare 9 territory. Large open-air farmers market open on thursday and sunday, rain or shine. A lot of prepared foods to eat, ingredients to buy, and clothing accessories to wear. It starts at the north end at the rue de sabin, all the way south to the bastille memorial. Wife picked up a large women's stole for a great price, and contrary to what others say, a bit of bargaining is allowed. read more

Marche Bastille is one of the largest and oldestt open air markets in Paris. It is open Thursday, 7am-2.30pm and Sunday, 7am-3pm. The market has dozens and dozens of stalls all leading towards the Place de la Bastille's Colonne de Juillet (big monument and roundabout marking where the Bastille used to be) There are vendors for just about anything you can think of. Seafood, butchers, vegetables, fruits, crepes, lite bites, gifts, leather goods etc. We grabbed a bag of thyme infused olives from the olive stall, a bottle of white wine and a dozen raw oysters and dined in the midst of the market at a standing table taking it all in. Really excellent market to check out if you've got some good weather and spare time for wandering and tasting. read more

Marché Bastille is nearly 3 miles from our hotel. I walked the entire way purely because of a crapouline poulet vendor. Apparently her spatchcock chicken is legendary. And gosh darn it, I was going to get at least one crispy French chicken! Unfortunately after walking up and down the entire market more than once, we couldn't find any spatchcock chicken. To say the least, I was disappointed. We soothed our need for French chicken by purchasing a roasted chicken. It was just so-so. On our way out, we stopped by a crepe stall and got a savory crepe with cheese, egg, and sausage. Each crepe is made to order so they're super hot and fresh. So delicious! A perfect French breakfast! I'm not certain that the Marché Bastille is as good as the Hollywood or Santa Monica Farmers markets. The produce didn't appear to be from farmers. Instead many of the boxes were labeled as being from other countries (not France). I was also shocked at how many wasps were all over the fruit and sweet bread vendors. It seemed to be perfectly normal and acceptable to other customers. But honestly seeing swarms of what looked like wasps freaked me out. The cheese, charcuterie, and canned foie vendors were appealing but we didn't purchase anything because we really weren't sure what we could bring back to the US. Overall I'd say this is a large market with lots of produce, clothing, and food vendors. I wish they had more food vendors and I really wish we'd seen the crapouline poulet vendor. I'm not sure this market is worth a 3 mile walk but I'm glad we make the trek across Paris. read more

This farmer's market/street fair occurs every Sunday and Thursday in Bastille, Paris (by the tall Bastille pole). Our accommodation was close to here so we came by on Sunday and again on Thursday. There were more vendors and more people on Sunday. They close in the afternoon so best to check the website for times. The market has vendors selling specialty food items (special cheeses, fresh uncooked pastas, coffee beans), clothing, cooked foods (crepes, pastries, wraps), produce, scarves, souvenirs (better prices than the tourist shops), soaps and much more. We purchased the cooked Lebanese wrap filled with hummus, tomatoes, olives, falafels. It was really delicious and the price cannot be beat. I also bought a small bag of fleur del sol at a very reasonable price. Should have gotten more but I didn't know enough about it to get too much. Later, after googling, it turns out this is way cheaper than getting on amazon and the quality of this particular Fleur del sol is one of the best. We also bought scented soaps and scarves which make for some nice gifts. There is a lot of produce being sold too. We purchased a huge bag of grapes for only 1 euro! And it was very sweet and juicy. The cheese we bought was good but he wasn't able to give us a smaller piece. There were tons of bees around the pastries and produce though and nobody seemed to mind or thought it unsanitary. There were also fresh eggs being sold but not refrigerated. Check the prices before purchasing because some vendors sell the same thing with big price differences. read more

Marché de la Bastille has EVERYTHING: from fresh produce to clothes to hand-made notebooks to one of the best crêpes I've had in Paris! Bought myself an amazing smoked salmon and goat cheese crêpe: fresh and piping hot, I was in heaven! Also purchased a small, hand-made notebook from the non-food items section of the open-air market. Rustic and leather-bound, it was beautifully-crafted. The Bastille monument towers over the market, so you will no trouble finding this wonderful market. One of the highlights of our trip to Paris. Just an amazing outdoor market that puts ones in the US to shame. It's a perfect place to stock up on picnic supplies and then head over to the Place de Vosges (or any park/ site) to eat all the goodies you acquired. Don't forget to buy a knife for slicing the salamis, cheese and fruit you bought. The market is also a great place to take photographs. Easy to find - just North of the Bastille monument. Find the creperie people! For about €4.50 each crepe, it is large enough to be shared by three adults who just want a sweet thing to satisfy a craving. This open market is a place where I've heard musicians playing great music and singing with a voice that I have only come to associate with the French. You have to be there to understand what I am talking about. It can get crowded on a Sunday. read more

There's so much to see and buy at this street market. There's fresh fruits/veggies/raw meats & fish, ready to eat foods, flowers, souvenirs, clothes, and so much more. I love going to markets like these because I get a sense of what it's like to be a local. As I was strolling through, I can smell the amazing aroma from the crepes and I couldn't help but stop to get one. I got one with Nutella and bananas which cost only €3.60. The crepe was perfect and made exactly how I think they should be. It was crispy throughout the whole crepe and no soggy parts. It was filled with the right amount of toppings and with each bite, you had bananas and Nutella. This is probably one of my better street food finds! The vendors are friendly and you can haggle on some things. Also make sure you walk around and scope out better deals. Some vendors sell the same or similar items at different prices. read more

I live right next to the Bastille. Everything closes on Sundays and this is a fun market to get your fruits vegetables meats fish jewelry purses etc. A must buy item is their freely squeezed juice. I got the orange Banana and apple. Delicious. Also they have the cheapest and biggest crepes I've seen here for (nutella) 2.60 euro. Great place to experience Parisian life. Awesome farmer's market! Very touristy (you can hear lots of English), but who really cares? There are more than enough true Parisians around that you can feel like a local. Marche Bastille has everything: fruits and vegetables, food stands, poissoneries (fish mongers), boulongeries (bakeries), and fromageries (cheese stands). There are even stands selling clothing and other junk, but I kept my distance from those. There are stands where you can get prepared food; I got a delicious smoked salmon and chevre crepe. The market is huge, covering several city blocks, and it is open on Thursdays and Sundays. read more

This place is a great place to hit up for various things such as shampoos, socks, sweaters, sausages, poultry, fish and even fruits/veggies. They also have some souvenirs you can buy for cheap too, compared to the gift stores around major landmarks. This is a great farmers market and the vendors aren't necessarily trying to rip you off. I was able to get a cardigan for a little cheaper than listed so I was very happy. The vendors are nice and charming. They knew we were American and spoke to us in English. We were able to try and buy sausages with the kind man. We were also able to grab some cute scarves in the front for 5€ each, not bad for the amount of warmth provided by this suckers. There is a stall that sells fresh breads and baked goods. I would definitely come here to buy more next time! The baguette was fresh, soft and was under 3€ for about a foot! Another must try is the vendor that sells crepes! Fresh made and they offer both sweet and savory crepes. If you're in town, definitely go here to experience the fresh produce and meat selection that the locals have to offer :) read more

This must be one of the better Sunday markets in Paris. It's huge and a treat for all the senses. There are at least 3 fish mongers and I saw fresh langostinos for €19. Lots of veggies and fruits, mushrooms and fresh and roasted meats. I bought some of those tiny strawberries that are more like raspberries in size and juiciness - must be eaten with 24 hours... and they were. read more

If you can't find what you're looking for, just keep walking! You're bound to find it eventually at one of the many booths in this market which is open every Thu & Sun until around 2 pm. Going to the Marché de la Bastille has become part of my weekly ritual. Every Sunday, my wife and I prepare for our week by buying the next weeks assortment of fresh fruits and veggies. But this place has much more and each time we go we experience something new. Just today, we found a Caribbean home cooking booth where we had fried spicy shrimp dough balls (beignet de crevette) with an assortment of other homemade samosas with their own onion and tomato red sauce. Very delicious. We just plopped down on a bench in the middle of the market and went to town. Many of the booths sell the same variety of fruits and veggies and I think it will take some time but we are already picking out our favorites. Just a heads up that if the booth is marked with the "AB Bio" logo, expect to pay significantly more. Today's groceries cost us just under 20 euros and I was weighed down with bags. The same amount back home from Whole Foods would have cost me well over 100$. read more

Coming from San Francisco, I go to my fair share of outdoor markets. I love strolling through stalls, snacking while I buy fresh produce and baked goods. If you do too this is a fun market to visit (especially on Sunday when all of Paris relaxes). This is an incredibly large market: seafood, meats, crafts, clothes, flowers and more. I sampled various rotisserie chicken, paella and rounded out my informal brunch with a simple sugar butter crepe. I brought a couple tote bags and found some soaps and bread to bring back. It was pretty packed with locals and a decent number of tourists. Three stars since a few of the vendors had a bit of a cold shoulder. read more

Sundays in Paris don't get any better than this! I can't even begin to describe how many different stalls there are here and you can find just about anything your heart desires: Fish, Meat, Offal, Fresh Vegetables, Souvenirs, Cheese, Pates... We grabbed some fresh cherries, pate en croute, a baguette and several delicious cheeses. Then we headed over to the canal and sat there for several hours enjoying a picnic. If you forgot to bring a picnic blanket, you can buy one at the market: the really nice thin ones that you can easily pack in your bag without being weighed down. ENJOY! read more

This is a fantastic place to get any delicious hot food at reasonable/cheap prices - Libanese, Italian, Indian, French (crèpes, galettes, etc.) The fruits and vegetables are much cheaper than the markets and the quality is about the same as well. Coming from the SF Bay Area, I love outdoor markets. Nice variety of produce, ready-eat food and bread, and gifts. Delicious galette, highly recommend! However, the strawberry vendor sold me strawberries that were more than half rotten, and gave me the wrong change (25% of my payment) that I only noticed when I left the stall. Perhaps it's a human mistake but two wrongs from one vendor just leaves me feeling cheated. read more

Where we were staying in Bastile, this little market was right out the front door practically! This open air market is so amazing, it has every fruit and vegetable you can imagine and all laid out so beautifully. It happens on Thursday and Sunday, the perfect days to do your grocery shopping, right? Oh, the French, they think of everything cool with regards to food, right? The colors and smells and presentation just floored me and made me want to move over there for a little while, just because. I loved the fresh made pasta, and the organic meats. The vendors are so sweet, especially to the people who have very bad French but who are trying, like me :-) I could butcher the the fuck out of the French language all day at this market and not break a sweat, that's how much I loved it!! Toward the monument at the top of the street, you could find vendors with clothing and such, some furniture and knick-knacks. I got some cool herbs and spices that I cannot get here in the US too. U.S. farmers markets can't hold a candle to this amazing, expansive, and wonder of wonders. From cheese to meat to bread, flowers, clothes, and so much more this market was one of the highlights of our trip (due to its proximity to our B&B). We loved all of the French Markets, but this was by far the largest. Go watch Parisians shop for their dinner and be amazed at just how fresh everything is. One of the best markets in Paris. Fresh fruits, veggies, bread, fish meats and almost everything else u might need. Bought scarves, bras (yes, bras for two euros!) pants and the freshest lettuce and tomatoes you can imagine. Those were bought at the last moment, about one pm, when the vendors give everything away for one euro. So the best time to arrive is at eleven so you get to do the market and catch the last minute specials from the screaming vendors. Totally cool experience. Btw arriving at eleven means you might miss out on the bakery goods because they may be sold out but who cares --- bakeries with good bread are everywhere in Paris! read more

What a great way to immerse yourself in French culture. From 7am-1pm, the street transforms into a huge open air market place, selling fresh produce, cheese, charcuterie, seafood, roasted chicken, bread, ethnic food, clothes, soaps, and all sorts. The number of vendors and the variety of items for sale can be a little overwhelming (especially if you're an indecisive person like me). I ended up spending a good hour and a half walking back and forth down the street, amazed by the freshness of food and by how cheap they were! Just make sure to get there early before the vendors run out of food! read more

Fabulous market! It's comparable to the huge famous outdoor market in downtown Barcelona, though this one is a bit smaller and more farmer's-market-y. Lots of amazing fruits and vegetables, breads, cheeses, and paella stalls. There are at least 2 or 3 of each stall, so if you see something you like (particularly when it comes to the clothing/scarves), make sure you make the rounds to ask around. Something going for 90 euro at one stall may be 30 just down the way (hint). People are open to bartering, and when things start to pack up around 2:30 the vendors slash their prices to unload their produce. A really nice vibe, great fun, happy to have gone! read more

In America we have plenty of farmers markets that vary in size and quality. This is the ultimate farmers market - everything you could think of is there plus a ton of other things that you wouldn't even think would make it to a farmers market. If we could've gone every day, we would have. Three different crêpe makers, a couple of different fishermen, lots of fruit and vegetables and meat and clothes and accessories and souvenirs and a bunch other things and I'm not even thinking of. Perhaps the only downside to Marché Bastille was that there wasn't a nice grassy park nearby for us to sit in and enjoy our shopping. Maybe there is but I don't know where. read more
