Dr. Stanard is a FANTASTIC Periodontist. Unfortunately, I have a lot of gum issues, so a periodontist is a necessity for me! Thus far, my gum disease has not progressed into me needing the surgeries that are typically needed for some. My impression/visit with Dr. Stanard......he is very knowledgeable and thorough and explains everything in layman's terms. I found Dr. Stanard, who not only is an outstanding dentist, he is also kind and cares about his patients. Dr Stanard has completed various procedures for me over the last ~8 years, and I couldn't more highly recommend him. Yesterday I had a molar pulled and it was a bit complicated due to twisted and somewhat brittle roots, but he made it as minimally painful as possible, and not even 24 hours later I'm in significantly less post-procedure pain than I'd anticipated. The procedure itself, while of course not exactly fun!, was comparably pleasant as I was sedated with nitrous oxide, and also Dr Stanard & Bryan's [spelling?] banter was enjoyable and they even included me when possible ;) Note that this review is for a procedure completed at the Gaithersburg location, as they don't have nitrous at the Dupont location. read more

Had to stop by to give Dr. Stanard his absolutely deserved 5 stars. Over the last year or so, I have been in and out of his office many times (frenectomy + gum grafts on both sides of my bottom teeth) and have never been less than 100% pleased with the quality of care. If anyone is going to be performing periodontal surgery on you, you want it to be Dr. Stanard - he is straightforward, extremely talented, reassuring, has a great sense of humor, and is very proactive about patient care. After both grafts, he called to see how I was feeling and also made himself available (both by text and in person) on short notice to respond to my concerns. Needless to say, everything healed smoothly and I've now "graduated" from the practice with healthy gums. Truly, I wish he had a broader scope so I could see him for other issues - he is the best! I had a severe collision playing backyard football in high school and neglected to appropriately address my recessed gum line on one of my bottom teeth caused by the impact. I've had two dentists urge me to take care of it for about 20 years and finally decided I needed to take it seriously. After being referred to Dr. Stanard, I went in for a consultation and was greeted with his obvious expertise, a kind demeanor and great staff. I ended up needing a frenectomy and a graft (both of which sounded terrible but necessary). After having just perfected the second of the two surgeries today, I couldn't believe how incredibly confident I became in Dr. Stanards ability and am thrilled all went smoothly and relatively pain free. I might add that my wife is laughing at me for raving about how much I like Dr. Stanard (especially as I am sitting here with a cold compress on my face, and just now joined YELP officially just so I could post this) UPDATE: Dr. Stanard even called me (on a Saturday) to check up on me and to ensure I didn't have any unanswered questions about the post op recovery. I had a gum graft done at his office--in and of itself, not a pleasant experience--but Stanard went above and beyond to make me comfortable and keep me informed of everything as it happened. He's very friendly, but not overly talkative, and ensures that you know exactly what's going on in your mouth, as well as what to expect afterward. He even called me 2 days after the procedure to check in and make sure everything was going ok. All follow up appointments were quick and easy. I never waited more than a few minutes (much to my dismay given the comfortable waiting area and great reading selection). His staff are really helpful, pleasant and professional as well. Dr. Stanard recently performed a gum graft on me. It was a challenging graft because of the amount of recession (a lot) and the fact that my (canine) tooth protrudes a little bit. He did a superb job and was able to get 100% coverage, which he wasn't sure was possible because of the severity and complexity of it. Leading up to the procedure, he made me feel very comfortable with what to expect, and he explained everything. No surgery is fun, but the operation itself was very smooth, and Dr. Stanard was definitely aware of my sensitivities and fears and accommodated them completely. Dr. Stanard went over the post-op care that I had to perform more than once (to make sure I understood, thankfully for me), and he answered all of my questions, from my initial consultation to follow-up care. He's also a patient and clearly a caring doctor, and his staff is excellent (and very forgiving when you miss an appointment). I'll be going back to him for another graft in a few months. read more

My very first gum graft, and I'm actually quite pleased with the overall experience. First, Dr Stanard and his staff are great. He's very friendly and answered all my questions, and importantly my procedure itself was completely successful. He also gave him his personal cell phone number and called me after the procedure to check up on me personally. His staff are great too, very friendly and helpful, and they actually recognized me by sight and remembered my name after a few visits, which I thought was pretty amazing. I was always able to get appointments relatively easily and never had to wait long after arriving. Second, the office location is great -- conveniently located right by the Dupont Circle metro (south exit), and there's a pharmacy right next door (so you can pick up prescription meds afterwards). It's also convenient to be able to grab soups and shakes after your procedure at the lunch places immediately next door (because you can't eat solid food after your gum graft and are in no mood to go trudging around the city). All in all, five stars -- as good as it gets! read more

I have had both gum graft and bone graft surgeries done by Dr. Stanard since last year (and eventually, I need a separate tooth extraction & implant next up!). They are certainly not the most fun of dental procedures, but both have turned out well. He explains everything very clearly, and my general dentist was pleased with the results. He has a great demeanor and I feel comfortable asking him questions about everything. Frankly, I was shocked when some of my procedures were on Friday afternoons, and he called me on a SATURDAY to follow-up on how I was doing - very impressive! Updated to add: I just visited my regular dentist again, who saw me earlier this year and told me I needed to have my second gum graft done within the next six months. Dr. Stanard performed the graft about three and a half months ago. My dentist examined my mouth closely and initially couldn't even see where the procedure had been done, because the grafted area blended so well with the rest of my mouth. While checking my gums, my dentist stopped and said several times, "Wow, that guy does great work." read more

Like others, I had a fantastic experience with Dr. Stanard! I recently finished my second (and hopefully last) gum graft with him, and I could not be more pleased with the experience. At the first appointment Dr. Stanard thoroughly examined my mouth and told me that some of the sensitivity I was experiencing would be fixed if I stopped using whitening toothpaste - absolutely true! He also explained why my previous gum grafts were basically gone and what he (and I) would do to make sure that didn't happen again. Both procedures went off without a hitch - he gives you the option of a play-by-play or not, and to take a look at key points or not. Follow-up appointments have been quick, thorough, and useful. He was so great that I asked him for a recommendation for a general dentist so that I could continue my care with someone as professional and experienced as he is - and he gladly provided the name of a practice that is particularly good at dealing with gum recession. read more

In theory a gum graft seems like it should be a very unpleasant experience. In practice, Dr. Stanard makes it a very simple and straight forward operation. He clearly explained everything before hand, indulged my request to wait "just a few more minutes to let the Novocaine really kick in" and let me wear headphones to play calming classical music throughout the entire procedure. While I can't say I'm looking forward to another operation, I wouldn't hesitate to have Dr. Stanard perform future gum work. read more

Dr. Stanard was recommended to me for a gum graft which I badly needed about a year ago. It was my first time having any kind of surgery and I honestly can't imagine it being any more straightforward of a procedure. He and his staff are very helpful from questions about insurance to scheduling to answering questions about the procedure and sharing other thoughts about your dental health. I really appreciate, and think that anyone else would as well, Dr. Stanard's willingness to explain what is happening but also his willingness to let you tune out if you want to do that. I hope I don't have to have more gum grafts in my life, but if I do I will certainly come back to Dr. Stanard's office. As it is I will probably be getting tooth implants there sometime this year -- you can't ask for better service than what his team does, in my opinion. read more

Long story short, I had severe gum recessions after I wore Invisalign for 2+ years. My general dentist recommended Dr. Stanard, and I had my first gum graft done at the end of 2014. Although I'd already googled what the whole procedure would be like, I felt uncomfortable until I visited his Dupont Circle office, spoke to his friendly but capable staffs, and met Dr. Stanard. Dr. Stanard first taught me the right way to brush my teeth and how to take care of my gums to prevent future recessions. Then, on the day of surgery, he patiently explained what I will go through and started the operation. I have to admit that the whole process just went by so smoothly that it felt more like a meditation session - and this is a rare experience as going to a dentist is my least favorite activity. I just finished my 7 gum grafts and would highly recommend Dr. Stanard for anybody struggling with gum recessions. read more

My Review of Dr. Marc Stanard I have been a patient of Dr. Stanard's for years. In my opinion, he is the best periodontist in DC!!! He is very professional, competent and patient oriented. Over the years, he has provided me with invaluable education and my gums remain very healthy. Years ago when I first went to him my gums were very sensitive and bleed very easily. That is no longer the case due to annual care, treatments and education. Prior to moving to the DC area, I had been to several other periodontists. However, none of them could match the care and service provided by Dr. Stanard. Without a question, Dr. Marc Stanard exceeds the 4 star rating here. When I come across people looking for an excellent periodontist, I tell them about Dr. Stanard because great doctors in this field are hard to come by.
