For many years this has been a Currys store but has recently undergone a transformation and…read morereopened as Currys PC World. The most noticeable change is the addition of new upper floor which has greatly increased the shop floor space. Downstairs is effectively PC World with computer equipment, video games, TV's and photographic equipment on display. The new upper floor houses what used to be Currys - fridges, freezers, washing machines and so on. It's a nicely laid out store with an impressive range of stock, although not necessarily cheap from what I saw. However it is handy to have a PC World close to home as in the past the 'local' branch was fifteen miles or so down the coast in Bangor.

After paying the upfront price of £50 I gave them my laptop thinking this would be a quick and easy part of my life. How wrong was I. 10 days pass so I decide to ring the Know how desk at pc world. The lady answered and asked me to wait a moment while she got someone to help and puts me on hold. After being on hold for about 5 minutes I was hung up on. Next I rang the know how customer service number which I had to search the internet for. My laptop had been diagnosed and was awaiting my payment before they began repairs. For some reason they hadn't rang me and I paid the remainder of £22 which took my total payment to £72 (more than I expected). Later on in the week I received a text from know how saying my laptop will be available to collect on Saturday. Today (Saturday) I went to the store 3 miles from where I live only to find out my laptop wasn't there. The text is sent when the laptop leaves the repair center and the date is and estimate. They told me I would receive a phone call when my laptop is ready to collect defeating the purpose of the text message. I just hope I will have my laptop returned to me soon. This experience has been unpleasant and I will not get my laptop repaired with them again in the future. I hope this review will make people realize that just because they are a large company doesn't meant they are the best.

Of course the only - and I will go as far as to say major - drawback to this type of store is that it is rare that electrical goods will be the type of thing you will want to pick up from a charity/second hand store. It's not snobbery or a need to keep with the constantly rapid changes to electrical goods that causes this but simply that these goods don't really last that long. It may be that they're not built to last - as everyone now knows from the need to upgrade your mobile every year or 2! - but often it is usually the software or hardware that you need to use with these items. Of course you can see Allkinds as some sort of Be Kind Rewind thrift store for the analogue junkies who wish to preserve the beauty of tapedecks and 8 tracks in valiant attempt to stave off the digital onslaught. There is a growing number of people seeking out analogue gems in order to play their old mixtapes and being a vinyl fan I totally agree but be warned I am yet to find anything in such a store that will work well or not need a little work. However that is often the beauty of hunting down these items.

There aren't many places left in Liverpool or indeed even in the country which still stock and sell cassettes and vinyl's but it is nice to see that there are some places with real passion which are not letting this fantastic trade die. The selection inside was astounding with music from various different eras and even such classics as BBC sound effects albums last seen on an episode of Father Ted I believe. The owner of the shop could not have been more friendly as he indulged me naive requests and questions regarding old music as I was desperate to find out as much information as I could. Even though this place could do with a bit of a refurbishment there is no cause for complaint from me. It is like stepping into a simpler world and for a few minutes you can browse the store and forget the mayhem outside and if you have a cassette of vinyl player you might bag yourself a bargain.
