She pointed out all manner of interesting locations; houses of Renaissance legends like Zora Neale Hurston and Marcus Garvey, the former locations of the Cotton Club and the Savoy, and current projects like the restoration of the Apollo and the Schomburg Center. Lunch was delicious, a soul food buffet with some of the best mac and cheese and collards I've ever had. We gratefully went an hour and a half over our expected time, and only had to cut _that_ short because of prior engagements. I feel very lucky to have met such a knowledgeable and charming person, and even luckier to have been given a glimpse into the history of one of the most dynamic and interesting places and times in America. The process is always the same: the accountant files taxes and then a few weeks later you get a phone call saying that your check is ready to be picked up. You must pay for their services in order to get the check. Last year was the first time I filed taxes on my own since I just graduated college. Since my mother trusted this person, I decided to file with him too. Everything went smoothly until I got a letter from the IRS specifying how much my refund was. I was shocked to find out that there was a difference between what I received and what they sent. I called them to confirm it. Finding out I was missing money ignited my curiosity and I checked my entire family's check against the amount the IRS sent. All of us were missing around $300 each. In total, the losses for the entire family reached around $1,000. I tried in vain to get my money back. Since the owner of this establishment was smart enough to keep everything casual and didn't give us receipts, I have no leverage. This review is the best I can do to warn others against this despicable business that steals from a mostly poor community.
