The answer is Pan de Manila, which has branches all over the metropolis because Pinoys simply cannot live without their daily pan de sal. Yes, there are countless neighbourhood bakeries that bake the lightly salted bread every morning. But the problem is one of quality control. The pan de sal comes out in various sizes and can become bigger or smaller than usual depending on the whims of the baker. Then there's the matter of taste. Regular bakers will make do with whatever is available where raw ingredients are concerned. As a result, one batch of pan de sal can taste great, while another batch can be flat, all from the same corner bakery. Not so with Pan de Manila, which has a branch along Dona Soledad Avenue in Paranaque City. Not only is their pan de sal baked in a wood-fired oven, but the size is always uniform. The branch in Better Living is one of the bigger ones, which means that besides the ubiquitous pan de sal, all sorts of 'palaman' are likewise available, from cheddar cheese to peanut butter to bottled sardines. They also have their own brand of instant coffee. Pan de Manila has two sizes of the basic bread, regular and large. And since pan de sal can also be served for merienda, Pan de Manila is open all day all the way to early evening. Enter the store and the aroma of freshly baked bread immediately fills your nostrils, enticing you to buy your favourite bread. For good taste and consistency, Pan de Manila deserves five stars.

There's definitely no need for anyone to convince us to buy from Potter's Bakeshop. Located just outside Phil Am Life Village in Las Piñas, this small bakeshop serves the goodness of old-time favorites such as the classic pan de sal, loaf bread, custard cake, simple donut, kababayan, crack bread, crinkles, and so much more. My personal favorites are the pan de coco, the Spanish bread, and the pianono. Their pan de coco filling has just the right sweetness and has a balanced texture. For the Spanish bread, I usually choose the slightly darker ones because taste of the bread itawlf contrasts more with the sweet filling. What I like about their pianono is that it tastes exactly the same even if I eat it from the outermost layer going in (following the roll) - layer of cake, margarine and sugar in every bite. It may sound a bit odd that I appreciate this, but for me, it shows how consistent they are with their baked goods. Insider Tip: We were told that the best time to go is between 9 to 10 am as it's when our favorites are brought out warm and soft from the oven.

Construction workers, security guards, students, and even some of the rich folk often pass by to get some of their favorite Pinoy treats. Whether its a pianono, kalihim, or kabayan, anything you buy here will satisfy your taste buds. If my tongue had a mouth it would've thanked me each time I spent ten pesos here, which is often more than enough to get rid of my hunger pains. I became a regular here at some point because I often woke up late for class and ended up having to eat breakfast during my commute. If you've read my review up to this point and found it helpful I just want to ask you a tiny favor, give this place a try and help spread the word. The world needs more good news.

Plus, they often slash the prices of their breads towards the end of the day and you'll know the discount time is on because there's always a line in front of the counter when that happens. But it's not just about getting cheap bread. They actually have pretty decent meals. One favorite is the soup in a bread bowl. It reminds me of the time Clam Chowder in San Francisco pier. Their soup selection is very creamy and rich - their version of the clam chowder is always popular as is the bacon and potato soup. Whatever it is that they have boiling in that pot, it's sure to satisfy. Their beef lasagna is also very good. It has just the right blend of beef Ragu and béchamel sauce. It has layers of mozzarella cheese that melts when they heat it up for you. It comes with one garlic pesto stick, so I suggest you already order an additional slice of garlic bread. The Entrée selection is exciting. My favorite chicken cordon bleu is done really well here. The deep fried roulade of chicken breast with butter and cheese is encrusted with sourdough bread crumbs that lends it a different flavor. You can get it with either creamy herb sauce or gravy. They have a lot of other French food which are really good but are still very affordable.
