Absolutely amazing experience, and I don't think I would've had as good a time without our instructor, Nick. It was a group of 4 students to 1 instructor. If you've read my other reviews, you'd know Hubby and I have had more than the average number of lessons, and we do go out on our own at home in San Diego, but we'd like to get a lesson at any new beach when available. And thank GOODNESS we did here on this particular day. The other two students both have surfed only once with a lesson before, and it seemed everyone loved the experience. Nick took the time to understand our abilities first, then assessed the surf and decided on the best spot for the easiest time paddling out. A bit of a work out just carrying the boards a good quarter mile down the beach. It was incredibly choppy that day, so he instructed us to paddle out right in the riptide, then cut across the sand bank to the line up. It all worked out beautifully, and I got some amazing waves with Nick giving me a push and telling me exactly when to pop up, even rode in on the super intimidating overhead ones I normally probably would be too scared to try. However, when I took a break on the beach, the second time paddling out was exponentially more difficult. Nick was able to push my board, with me on it, past these crazy waves, because I was about to turn around and give up. Another student had an emergency, and he was able to go help her, then come back and continue to push me past the breaking waves, so that I could get one more ride back to shore. I absolutely trust him to keep everyone safe and still make sure each person have a great time. Overall, probably top 2-3 surfing lesson across the 20+ we've had! Equipment was fairly new and in good shape. Changing facilities were basic but serviceable. read more

Hi Liana, Many thanks for your review on Manly Surf School and our…
Believe the hype. Group lesson, $70, just book online or give them a call. It's super easy to find because it's in the basement of the permanent looking shack in the middle of the beach with bathrooms and changing rooms. They set you up with a wetsuit and board, and take you out for two hours. Our instructor Nick was remarkably enthusiastic cheering "woohoo" as people made it up on the board on our first day. Would definitely do another lesson if I am back in town. Oh right! Manly is super easy to get to. You just take the ferry (every 10-20 minutes) from Circular Quay by the opera house then walk ten minutes north east to manly beach from the ferry terminal at Manly. read more

There must be waves all over the world being ridden by people who've learned to surf at Manly beach. Every time I'm there, yet another Untied Nations crowd heads across the sand from North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club, dressed in wetsuits and faded white surf school rashies, awkwardly carting or dragging their large and unfamiliar boards with them. There's always a healthy mix of sexes and ages - lots of girls, actually (perhaps the equivalent blokes think it all looks easy and just rent to board to give it a go ... and perhaps that's why the life saving clubs at Manly are so well patronized!?!) My kids have done birthday parties with the school - a good couple of hours in the waves is the ideal way to exhaust large numbers of children, and they love every minute of it. Even in a single party, most can get up on the board at least for a short distance, and the grin of success on their faces is priceless. I'm sure some are motivated onto bigger and better things, but for most simply adding this new dimension to a day at the beach is enough. The only thing I don't understand is why they wear those pale rashies - wouldn't something bright and distinctive make more sense when you're trying to keep track of bodies in the sea?? read more
Excellent way to spend two hours, or probably to really lay the foundations for a more professional career if you have time and ambition. Book online, by phone, or just drop by when they're open. read more

Great lesson for beginners like myself! I had been surfing once before in another beginner's lesson and barely stood up, so I anticipated the same to happen again. However, the instructors are extremely encouraging and really want you to catch waves! Lesson lasted for about two hours and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wasn't as bad as I thought'd I'd be! Definitely wouldn't have been able to do as well without the help of the instructor guiding you through the motions as you would begin to stand up. Would love to take more lessons in the future! read more

I knew I needed to surf at least once before leaving Sydney. I booked a group class for $70/2 hrs. It was well worth it. We had 3 instructors because we had a large group and they were super helpful and supportive. They really tried to get everyone standing to ride a wave at least once. Got me excited about giving me a foundation to work on if I ever live near water or any future vacays. It's also located in Manly which was my first time seeing it. Beautiful, busy beach town. Definitely worth the visit! read more

Incredible opportunity! In Sydney for the week & decided to take the ferry to Manly for the day. Booked a last-minute surf lesson... Because, why not? I was concerned about my physical limitations since I am still recovering from a spinal fusion so I booked a one-on-one lesson. My instructor was easy-going & more than willing to help me catch plenty of waves. I have limited shoulder mobility so he would push me into the waves to help me get going & when I started getting exhausted he pulled me out into the surf so I didn't have to work too hard. I was able to ride several waves & had an amazing time! Perfect day:) Highly suggest hitting up this surf school when you have the chance! read more

Coaches were super friendly and very cautious of your safety... if I knew the private lesson was only $30 more I would've def done the private.. the group lesson didn't stop me from standing up over 20 times though!! I only wish I got the private lesson so I didn't have to just ride the white water... read more

Great experience. I did the group lesson & only had one other person in the group! The wetsuits and everything was provided, so that was really nice. Instructed was also very uplifting and kept the lesson flexible read more
