The world-famous surfing break is lovely and quiet at 6am on a Tuesday; unlike almost all other times of day, Manly is not overflowing with people. Of course there are others out and about - walkers, joggers, swimmers and most of all surfers. But early in the morning is a great time to walk from Queenscliff to Shelley Beach, and watch the sun come up over the water. Despite the transport issues, the traffic and any other complaint you may have of Sydney, this makes you realize what a beautiful place we call home is.
At a fast walk, you can go from Queenscliff to Shelley and back in about 45 minutes at this time of day - as the day gets older, the beachfront gets busier with Mums with prams, elderly people with walking sticks and determined young things with dogs on leashes. A beautiful stroll at any time, it's best enjoyed at dawn or dusk. It's paved the whole way, and should you want to stop for just about anything you can - coffee? Food? Ice cream? An alcoholic beverage? A playground? All these are most certainly available along the Manly beachfront. To complete your morning (and undo all your good work in getting up and being healthy), I suggest a coffee and a waffle from The Barefoot Café! read more
