He did very, very well on the exam, and I give much of the credit to Nataliya (the rest of credit goes to my son, who worked very hard!). Going into this, we had reason for deep concern about his prospects. Well, we got the scores yesterday and they are outstanding. Thank you, Nataliya! On a personal level, Nataliya worked wonderfully with him. She is incredibly patient, and seems to have great instincts for how to work with different children. She worked with my daughter as well, just not as much, and clearly tailored her presentation to the nature of the child she was working with. (It bears mentioning that my son has some learning issues, which she clearly grasped and adapted to very effectively.) From a practical perspective, the virtual tutoring worked exceptionally well for my son. His generation is often more inclined to interact with others online than in person, and that is especially true for him. Erin is a fantastic instructor in so many ways! Not only is she super versatile, but is also very…read morethorough, attentive, and excellent at identifying the particular challenges that a student is stuck on at any given moment. She's great at coming up with clearly illustrated ways of explaining and correcting any aspect of playing technique, and is able to zoom in and get really specific about what exactly needs to be adjusted. To give an example, in my very first lesson with Erin I already had a major breakthrough that significantly improved my bowing. She was able to call attention to an aspect of bowing posture that I had completely overlooked previously. Once she showed me how to engage my whole torso, every other aspect of my bowing movement became much more fluid and relaxed. She was also able to easily adapt her pedagogy to my level of violin playing experience relative to my age and overall musical fluency level. As a 26 year old who is very new to violin (mostly self-taught with only a handful of prior lessons) while also being an experienced musician who is fluent in music theory and an advanced player of other (non-string) instruments, I would expect that my needs as a student are somewhat peculiar for the average violin teacher. Regardless, I felt like Erin was able to meet me exactly at the level I was at. I'm confident that she'd be able to deliver that same quality of customized instruction to any student, no matter their age or experience level!
