Two of us came for our first Fish 'n Chips lunch in New Zealand. We ordered the catch of the day, chips, two scallops and a king prawn each. I had not been in New Zealand since 2022 and was looking forward to fresh fish. The fish, although fresh, was a bit greasy for my liking. The scallops were fantastic and the king prawn was "okay". The venue was fantastic as it sat over the water overlooking the beautiful harbour. The staff were certainly warm and friendly. The price, however, at $72 was a lot higher than I thought it should have been. Maybe influenced by the tourist market but a bit excessive. read more

My first experience here was with my cousin, Kiwi native, and I'm a US native, was great! The fish, Hoki, tasted great and the big fries are tasty. Nothing like I've had before. For 3 pieces of fish ( 1 Hoki and 2 locally caught Bluenose) , 2 mean scoops of fries, 3 battered oysters ( which were too hot to even taste), and 2 small ordinary $10 salads...we paid a whopping $82...And thar was before ordering our beers!. Even without the $10+ holiday surcharge this was highway robbery!....The beers were overpriced, too! Admittedly, the setting is quaint and the views are fab....but , seriously, views like this are 'a dime a dozen' in NZ ... and, most chippies offer simple fare at simply fair prices. World famous. That's always intriguing. So off we went to try what this world famous fish shop has to offer. First off, the shop is located by the lake which is quite wonderful. The exterior though looks like any other fish and chips shop. However, once you get in, it is such a quaint place.. and the view was great in the "dining area". Making most of the view, are huge, clear sliding windows. Simple decor and fresh. On the day that we went it rained so it was a bummer though we still enjoyed the view. However, there is a leak in the roof which is resolved by placing a bucket under it - kiwi style I guess..:) Next, ordering. It was very busy but the crew were very efficient and attended to each customers right away without feeling being rushed. It was orderly too because they issue you a number then call it out. Much like the feeling in a fish market where people auction out bins of fish. It is quieter in the dining area so don't be alarmed! And then of course the food. I don't particularly think there is anything special with their fish and chips etc. It's not a life changing moment or anything ie I won't eat fish and chips anywhere else again. I'll still go to my local fish and chips place after that. Price - hmmm.. quite pricey and I think it's more of paying for the name and the place/view considering the above. All in all it was a great experience to eat at a World Famous Fish Shop. Will I drive there again to get some world famous fish and chips.. prolly not.. First off I need to clarify: the 4 stars is relative to other fish n chips shops. I'd hate for anyone to consider this rating relative to some of the fine dining restaurants I've noted as 4 stars. But as fush n chups shops go, this one is great. The town is quaint, and sitting on the patio overlooking the harbor is a perfect setting for some f&c. The fish is exceptionally fresh and lightly battered. They clearly pay attention to oil temps as the batter is well cooked without being burnt nor retaining any uncooked batter. Light and tasty, our blue cod was the best f&c fish I've had outside of our own fryer at home. The chips (not fries) are up to par with any other. Prices are a tad high, but the relative quality is worth it. But when, o when, will NZ get with the program and make tomato sauce servings a reasonable size? read more

We always stop at Mangonui Fish and Chips at some point in any of our northland trips. The town is really cute and the view is gorgeous. The food is good but it isn't GREAT.. The chips are nice but the fish and seafood were a little overdone when we went yesterday. We had the fish of the day (moki) which was a little too firm, the scallops which were too firm as well and the muscles which were downright rubbery. We will go back again because it's a lovely spot but we will stick to the fish and Chips next time. read more

I've visited this fish and chip eatery over many, many years. It's always good. The fish and chips are always awesome. The fish is fresh and the chips are yum. Nothing beats the view and being able to drink a coldie while you wait. Folks may be a little wide-eyed at the price of the fish but I'm always fine with it as it is most often a treat to eat there. LOVE THIS PLACE! For those who like other type of seafood there is a large selection of local and bought in seafood such as crayfish, crab, prawn, made up shrimp cocktails, mussels, oysters, scallops and more. You can also buy extra ketchup and usually the food comes with 'help-yourself style' free lemon wedges. You can sit outside, usually plenty of space to eat family style along large shared tables. Keep on your toes though. Tables can go fast but it all seems to be timed right. There is also a leaner bar that runs around the whole ocean side so you can sit a little more intimately and look out towards the harbour. When the tide is in, you can look through the large floorboards and see the sea lapping below. in the summer months, this place can be heaving and you may have to wait up to an hour to get your meal (if you happen to land there right on peak meal times or on a Friday or Saturday night.) Sometimes the service is a little crispy and their smiles maybe out with the tide. If they added helpful friendly service, I'm sure folks would be delighted. You can call ahead and order and take your bounty away to many of the picturesque spots if you wish. All in all a fantastic iconic fish and chip shop and I'll go back again and again with my kids and enjoy. Hopefully the fish is always remains fresh and whoever owns the place continues to provide a top notch casual eatery. Awesome! read more

We arrived there in time for the Mangonui festival and were looking forward to our stay in the area. The last time we had eaten at the Mangonui Fish Shop it was a long time ago and the food was great but this time we were very disappointing. They clearly need to pay attention to oil temps as the batter for the mussel and scallops were well over cooked without being burnt and also not retaining all it's batter. I had the Meat Lover Beef Burger and to say it's 100% homemade meat patty and to pay $13 for burger or with chips $15 well to my surprise the meat patty was either out of a box or Processed meat, when you say 100% homemade to me that means that you make your own meat patties starting with fresh mince.... The meat patty was over salted and with the smoked bacon been salty already making the burger not nice to eat at all. The staff and service were great but the prices there were very expensive for what it is. read more

Went here because travel guides online actually recommended it. You'll see from yelp and tripadvisor that this place does not live up to the hype. Having said that, the fish wasn't horrible although my gf thought it to be too greasy. The portions are small for the price that you're paying, so it's expensive. The view and location are nice. The staff was grumpy when we were there but not unpolite. I gove it three for location, view, and atmosphere and the food was decent, not special but did the trick. read more

Made the drive from Paihia up to try the fish based on various reviews. It is a scenic drive and be sure to stop in Keikeri, great town. We stopped at the Mangonui Fish Shop for dinner yesterday after driving from Cape Reinga. We heard that this was the best fish and chips in New Zealand. Well let me wise the rest of you "would be" patrons ................ don't even bother. There were two of us for dinner so I ordered three 'fish of the day", 1/2 scoop of chips and 12 squid rings. When we opened the white paper wrap there were three very small fillets of fish, nineteen chips (including the small chips which must have been floating around the fryer) and twelve small squid rings. Also purchased was a can of toamato sauce for three dollars. THE BILL CAME TO OVER $37.00 .. outrageous to say the least!! We have had better fish and chips in quality and by far price than this "Tourist Trap". So take my advice, just keep on driving!! I did photograph the over priced package, just in case the Mangonui Fish Shop has a complaint against me. The photograph is worth a thousand words and posted on their web site under my name!! I first went to the Mangonui Fish Shop nearly four years ago, and regrettably it has changed quite a bit since then. Overall, I would say that it has suffered from it's own fame and has just become a bit jaded from the hoards of patrons. True, the service is efficient but also a bit lifeless leaving you to feel just like the number you wait to hear when your order is ready. None of the other reviews give mention to the shrimp in seafood sauce which is still pretty stellar. It is also worth noting that the fish is on the pricey side b/c they own their own boats and the fish is super fresh. Any other fish n' chips shop will charge about $5-6 for their higher grade fish as well. I will say though I thought their chips portions were a bit stingy for the price. Perhaps, the tour buses will stop coming one day and the Mangonui Fish Shop will rise from the ashes like a Phoenix and be the great shop that gained them their original reputation. For the time being, stop by if you're in the neightbourhood or it's a beautiful day to eat on the water, but realize this is no longer off the beaten track. read more
