If you arrive in Munich, especially during Oktoberfest, in search of Weissbier, Pilsner, Dunkel,…read moreKölsch, Bock, you should round out the food you pair with your brew and have some amazing noodles at Max's. The only reason we had lunch at this spot was a table could only be had after a 40 minute wait on the curb. Feet almost never lie, especially when what drives those feet is hunger and a sharp, discerning taste. When it comes to this variety of noodles, I've spent years living in Asia and Max's brought be back to one of my favorite hawker centers. They make the noodles right in front of you. The broth, the beef, the spice.... perfection. Just for fun, I added a Fanta to my meal and then begged for another hit of noodles, which they will do, if you ate the type of person to finish them before consuming the broth, which is the correct way to eat Chinese noodles.

Max' is one of those few super efficiently run seated places where you don't need to feel obliged to tip or even order a drink, which makes the bill quite cheap by Munich standards. The beef soup ... is thin, consisting mostly of cheap noodles and watery broth that you need to make flavorable with the chili on your table. It's a weird niche they found here ... maybe their soupless noodle dishes are more savory, but I doubt I'll be back for more, and definitely won't wait for a spot.

She looked at their offerings online and sent me a screenshot of what she wanted. Then she changed her mind. Before I left the hotel to get her takeout, she changed her mind again. She finally settled for their Thai Lemon Chicken. Of course I would forget my umbrella and have to endure some drizzling round trip. When I entered the restaurant, there were two parties dining in. I walked up to the cashier and waited till he greeted me. It took a few moments but I then showed him a photo of what Mink wanted. He said do you want 22, 23 or 26? They all come with chicken. I didn't know what to say as I figured he works there and could tell me which one was the Thai Lemon Chicken. After reading the descriptions, I ordered 22 to go. It seemed like the closest option to the photo caption. He didn't ask how I was going to pay so I just assumed it was cash only. They were Chinese so it's possible they were cash only. Typical Chinese take out style customer service. I handed them 20 Euro for the 14.50 Euro dish. The kitchen didn't take long to get my order out. They packed it nicely and the utensils were to the right of the cashier. Mink said the food was better than she expected for Munich but it was just ok. I had some and I concur. It's still a good option if you're craving Asian food in the area.

Food tasted good, although not great nor refined to me. Be aware that the hotpot broths are somewhat oily, and many of the meats have quite a bit of fat. Would come back for the conversation, not the food per se.

Not sure how long it's been open for and I assume, less than 2 years. It's situated over two floors and the downstairs is in in a brick walled cellar. Upstairs there is seating for about 50 with a big bar and kitchen and there is an outdoor terrace for the warmer months. The menu is on a tablet and you can choose and order based on a limited set of options for drinks and food. The mainstay here is hot pot a new fad taking over Munich :-) Modeled after the traditional Chinese hot pot places with a big difference, way too expensive for what you get. There are plenty of choices for vegetarians and two broths to choose from. We ordered three different ones mushroom, curry and spicy (should have chosen the extra spicy in hindsight). You have to order a maximum of 12 things to go into the hot pot at a time and, each item counts as 1, like 4 scallops counts as 4 items, really annoying as you have to wait 15 mins before you can order the next 12. Each of the items is also so small that you barely get two or three mouthfuls in a serve. So considering it takes 30 mins to order a round and receive it at your table, it's slow going if you are really hungry :-) The app on the tablet was really annoying as when you are scrolling it randomly picks items and puts them in your cart as it's too sensitive to touch. This meant that each time we had to go back to the cart and remove items, before going back and picking what we really wanted, annoying. I much prefer the places where all the items are at the table and then you can pick and choose the order in which you cook and eat, not here. The app will max out at 12 and then you have rethink what you want. Staff are really nice and the ambience is also nice. They have a small selection of wines and mostly reasonably priced. Flavour is lacking generally and they kept diluting the broth by adding water to it which meant the hot broth just kept getting milder and milder. Without the sauces on the side this would have been a very bland meal. Also some of the seafood was frozen when it arrived at the table and the crab still has the plastic wrapping on it straight out of the freezer. The scallops were frozen when we received it at the table. Not sure many people would like that at all, we certainly did not. Dessert choices are limited but we did end up trying four of their Asian flavoured ice creams - matcha, black sesame, ginger and yuzu - probably more Japanese than anything :-) Ginger was the best and the rest lacked the intensity of flavour you commonly get with these in Asia and when properly homemade :-) The coffee was served almost cold and its never good when you serve an espresso like warm. At over €40 a head this is an expensive option, considering what was delivered to the table. I don't think I would rush back here in a hurry. Value for money is really lacking and there are a few other places that deliver much better flavour for less money in town.

In between my main residencies, I've lived and worked in several other countries. Taking my background into consideration, which is that my palate is definitely not authentically anything, but I have tasted a lot of different variations of food in general, I find this Chinese restaurant generally quite tasty. To be clear, not all the dishes are to my liking, and they are very greasy... but come on, at least this part is very authentic. The dishes that I find are made well, to be honest, I find them really quite tasty. I typically...always...only... go with the following: M.10 pan fried dumplings L3 thinly sliced 5-spice beef topped with Chinese chili pesto C1 tender sliced beef cooked in soupy spicy sauce (this dish is quite massive) C3 fried spiced chicken with fresh pepper, dry chili and szechuan pepper C10 shrimp (with shell) tossed with dry chili and szechuan pepper S1 Mapo tofu S4 stir-fry of chinese chive, bean sprout and chewy 5-spice tofu Keep in mind, the dishes are portioned in a rather Chinese way, meaning they are meant for sharing. You are not supposed to get 1 dish and just eat that with rice... unfortunately that's not how these type of restaurants work in Asia. If I would go alone, I'd typically get 2 dishes and expect A LOT of takeaway... so usually if I am alone, I just directly do takeaway :D I recommend that you go with at least 2 people... if you are 2, and are not too hungry or have small appetite in general, get a small dish or starter plus one main dish. If you want to eat a decent size meal, get 2 main dishes (or even plus a small dish / starter). I've done 3 main dishes in the past with just myself and another person, we couldn't manage without leftover / takeaway. So, best to go with 3+ I know the reviews about them are very mixed online, I have mix feelings too. But I've been going there for 4 years now, and I reckon that they've addressed some of the complaints / issues mentioned online, and at the moment, I find both the food and service quality quite good.

Loved each and every dish. I was running really late getting to dinner, so I asked my friends to preorder my food. The owner knew it was me and, he had recently read my Yelp review. Shortly after I arrived he came out with a dish of braised beef spiced just the way I like it and informed the guests "it's a Sam special". I felt so privileged for a moment :-))) And it was perfect ;-)) We had a Chinese friend with us and, she and her husband had lived in the Szechwan province for some years and, the husband remarked that, the pork dish was the best he had ever had and, even better than his wife's Szechwan style pork (which he thought was the best until last night). It was sort of a proud moment for me :-)) they are discovering what I already knew ;-)) So yea for spice lovers and lovers of Szechwan style cuisine, check it out. Let the pepper numb your tongue (it's a characteristic of Szechwan pepper) and enjoy the intense flavours. This is not a place for many people who don't like spicy food and, we had three such people in our group last night. I think they all loved it in the end. If you are willing to let your palette wander for a bit, the food might really surprise you. This is probably the first Chinese place in Munich, I would add to my "Asian in Munich" list :-)
