My mistake!…read more I happened to be in the general area, wanting to go to a specifically contemporary art museum that was *supposed* to be open but definitely was not. I was cranky about it, but just started heading back towards the city center on foot to see what the world might have in store for me. And what it had in store for me was all of the National Museums! Since I was planning on a museum any way, wanted to snag some WiFi, and it was included with my Copenhagen Card that expired that evening...I mean, why not check it out!? There was a great variety of artistic styles and time periods represented here. So, no matter what kind of art you like, you will find something that you enjoy here. I personally enjoy modern and contemporary art, and since I had been on the hunt for that earlier, that is where I focused my attention. They have a very nice contemporary collection. Visually appealing, colorful, and things I haven't seen before! I really enjoyed everything I got to see, both in the contemporary areas and the rest of the museum. And after wrapping up my art-ing, I got a bite to eat and a very good cup of coffee in the museum restaurant. I had a much nicer time here than I expected to, and should have had this on my must-see list earlier in my visit. Don't make my same mistake!

Still, there are a few wonderful pieces in the DHS collection. Although SMK has many Anna Ancher pieces with her signature soft, light-filled rooms, DHS has one of the best: the girl standing at the kitchen sink silhouetted against the golden light. Even better, there's also a beautiful portrait of Anna by her painter husband. I don't think this museum is for everyone, it doesn't have the architectural wow or collection size as other Copenhagen art museums. But, I'll say that if you really enjoy the Danish section at SMK or Glyptoteket, you'll probably enjoy DHS. I got through the whole collection in about an hour or so, including the special exhibition.

We strolled through this surprisingly large place on our way to the troll guy. I like contemporary art but this place topped all others with the weirdest exhibits I have ever seen in a museum. Wow! The troll guy's garbage themed exhibit was pretty normal (so much so there were many daycare groups of toddlers / small kids at it) compared to the rest of the museum exhibits. If you like edgy contemporary art it might be worth the trip to this museum south of town.

Built in the middle of the 19th century, this underground reservoir once supplied the entire city with drinking water. Once abandoned, the space is now an exhibition space. 2) Art: My friend and I went when Tomás Saraceno did his "Event Horizon" exhibit. Rowing a little boat through the exhibit, you're asked to remain silent and be present as you go through the water. You'll pass art that creates light and sound adding to the space's darkness. It's so unique! 3) Location: It's right next to the Frederiksberg Palace, a yellow 1735 palace with gardens that are popular with walkers and runners. Take time before or after the Cisternerne to explore the area. If you go, note that rowing is at your own pace. They recommend 40 minutes, but once you reach the end, you're done! My friend and I felt like we were rowing slowly, but it only took us 20 minutes. We felt like we didn't get the full experience. We wished we had stopped at more spots to sit and enjoy the exhibit.

We went in with a level of excitement but as soon as we made it underground, and away from the light of the entrance, the mood changed and we were completely immersed within another time and dimension. While the architecture and history alone make the space worth visiting, the current exhibit pulls out from within you, emotions and awareness you may not have ever harnessed. It is truly, truly, something you must see! I had researched the Cisternerne for quite some time prior to our trip, and it lined up perfectly with our morning at the zoo, as it was right across the street. The park above the exhibit is absolutely beautiful, and lends no insight to what lies below it.

Museet enlightened me to the circle of museums in the area, I saw the historical home on the list. And I am a sucker for an historical home! The entrance is a little unassuming and I probably would have missed it, had it not been for the easy-to-follow directions from the lovely woman at the Storm P. museum. There was a tent-sign outside advertising their "Women Authors" exhibit, but it was all in Danish, and the name of the museum was one of the smallest things on the sign. I was about to walk on past it, but the words "Jane Austen" caught my eye when I skimmed the sign while walking. And then I saw at the tippy-top the name of the museum. It is absolutely charming. AND included with the Copenhagen Card! At the entrance desk, you can get a packet that has a map of the layout of the house, as well as general information about each of the rooms in English (thank youuuu!). The home was a private residence to a family that were lovers and supporters of the literary and artistic community in the early 1800s. Several prominent authors (including one Hans Christian Andersen) were visitors. Like I said, I love an historic home, so even without that prominence, old books and old furniture and original fixtures fascinate and are of interest to me! Everything was in good condition and lovely to see. Upstairs was the special "Women Authors" exhibit. Unfortunately, all the information up there was in Danish. But, you know....the museum *IS* in Denmark, so I can't really complain. There were some Austen-esque clothing pieces that were fun to see. And beyond all that, outside the house is surrounded by lovely, very well-kept gardens. In the old greenhouse/orangery there is a little cafe. It was painfully charming. If you are in the Frederiksberg area, and you have the time, I would absolutely recommend that you visit this home and museum. But if these things just aren't for you...pass it by.

No vacation is complete at my place of employment with at least half of it spent in libraries and…read morework stations from Tokyo to Paris to Copehagen. 2nd time I'm donating my vacation time to my generous employers here in Copenhagen - last time was 2024. Guys like me are born every minute. That said, this Shine Bright Like A Black Diamond building is a modern sharp angled marvel and the second floor work-reading area is as quiet as an airtight unhaunted tomb! And shout out to the true Danish snack and beverage clerk who charged me for three espresso drinks but the. I wandered off with just one, grumbling silently to myself about an $18 coffee. She then left the counter moments later and walked 50 yards over to seated me and asked me in that blessed Danish tongue whether I wanted the other two coffees she made or did I just want the credit! thank God, maybe for the first time since my arrival two days ago, Dane responded to my Danish speaking Danish! Ah most look at me and figure I look like an American so they ignore me when I speak Danish and they just speak English. Kind and sweetly concerned, she made my day's wage slavery working on a Sunday all that much more bearable! What a modern marvel the structure is too!!

Well, it better not be like any other boring old library right? This library is huge, and just walking around it is a cool feeling. There's free wifi and plenty of areas to roam or sit. It's also right by the water, where I sat and enjoyed the breeze before taking the train back.

The cafe is amazing as it has glass walls on both sides and makes you feel like being outdoors in the nature. The yard of the museum is large and has some interesting art installations. Good for a Sunday trip/walk. Ideally go there when the weather is nice so you can enjoy the yard. By public transport you need to take the train to klampenborg and then a bus which leaves you just around the corner. Quite easy to find. There is also a closer train station which when reaching with bike takes about 10 minutes to bike to the museum.
