Staff are all very friendly and helpful. This is a perfect location for camping or simply a nice relaxing day with family and friends. They offer small grills, tables and covered pavilions. If you're not much for grilling and rather have a quick hot bite to eat they offer a few items in their café as well. Southwick will always be top of my list when it comes to beach days in our area.

I thought...well...I can use the outdoor rinse station so I walked over and...no water! How can such a nice looking facility not have running water?!?! I get frustrated by what I consider to be dumb things like this. I think a big part of the irritation (other than the sand I couldn't rinse off my feet) was how new everything looks, but still didn't have working showers. I might come back, but the lack of showers at a state park beach I found to be enough of an irritation to five this 3 start review. Lake - wonderful Views - amazing Facilities - attractive and new looking Working showers - a complete bomb If you don't care of you have a place to rinse off after spending the day in the sand - don't hesitate for a moment. I will say the fishing holes are marked well and the brochure map they provide is nice. The river itself is great! I know they deepened certain holes to encourage fish to linger on property longer, but this comes at a price as well. I encountered so many other fisherman, the water itself felt pressured and fish responded to the tourism. You can still have an amazing day here and everyone should visit at least once. What they have here is really special. My only real gripe is the price, which makes it unreasonable for me to return, when a quarter mile upstream is free public water.

Sandy Island Beach is a New York state park on the east end of Lake Ontario. It contains the only…read moresignificant freshwater natural sand dunes in the Northeast. Only a small part of the sand is open for use as a beach to the public, since most of it is protected park land. When I went it was not too busy, but it would not take very many people to fill up the beach. The natural dunes are beautiful and the sand is very fine and soft. The swimming area is roped off which restricts how far swimmers can go. The beach goes from smooth sand, to a few feet of slightly uncomfortable rocks where the waves crash, then back to smooth sand underwater. I went swimming and it was a pleasant experience, with 72 degree water in mid-August. The fee was $7 per car for the whole day and there's a decent amount of parking. There are bathrooms and showering facilities.

Also a fun place to skip rocks. It mostly has stones that wash up on the beach, there are plenty of rocks to choose from. The downside of this beach is that it is tiny, dirty, and at least every time I have been here it does not seem very swimmable. You cannot really enjoy a nice walk on the beach because it will be about a 3 minute walk to get to the end. There was a lot of trash scattered about the sand. Lastly the waves have always been pretty big when I have visited and with having stones instead of sand at the waters edge I can imagine it being a rough time. I would not think there is really a good time of year though to swim here or sunbath since it is pretty cold most of the year.

Then there were some summer training camps for various sports. In the 1960s the town encouraged the state to make a state park, and they did. And built up the facilities for tourists of course. I didn't see any camping, so not that kind of park. But on the water, nice walking trails, picnic areas and there's a pretty active boat launch.

Like other places they had rentals which was good because we had a first timer and the pricing was a little strange. I liked the way the bunkers were set up but you could tell the place wasn't maintained very well. They also only had about 4 fields you could go to and one field was speedball which was used by the local team the whole time. There was definitely not as many people as we thought there would be, it was my group and two other people. As far as gameplay it was fun however the refs could have been more involved based on other places we've gone to, as they explained rules but didn't call some of them (blind fire in my case). Overall I'd say it's a good place to go to especially if you have a group that you're going with.
