I'd like to preface with sharing our start in Venice...what appeared to be a quick jump on a people mover and 170 meter walk from Piazelle Roma on Google Maps was totally incorrect. It became over 700 meters with at least 8-10 footbridges! Thankfully we are both fully mobile and could manage our heavy luggage but it is a sore memory and still sore arms 4 days later that we hope our review spares other visitors. New International Limo set up a Water Taxi for our return to catch our train that delivered us directly from just near our hotel to Piazelle Roma and our awaiting chauffeur Gabrielle. Gabrielle quickly grabbed our bags from the Water Taxi and whisked us to the beautiful black Mercedes van awaiting. It was clean and new. Gabrielle delivered us safely to the train station for the next leg of our adventure safely and with no stress. My lesson learned is three-fold. Don't trust google maps in countries outside the US and Canada until after you are settled and have an idea of exactly where you or hire an expert like The New Inetrnational Limo. Venice is lovely and beautiful but not meant for anyone elderly or overweight with mobility or health issues. It is worth every penny to call The New International Limo from the beginning to end of any visit in Italy. They are experts and can handle everything from your water taxis to car services to your trains and lodging. We also learned they offer amazing tours and wished our stay was not so short. When we return Marina Brugaro and her team will be our very first call or email.

You open your room balcony door to overlook Lake Iseo, with the Swiss Alps in the distance. Our viewed was tainted a day or so by rain, but often that rain was followed by beautiful rainbows over the lake. The visuals are stunning, breathtaking! The staff at the hotel, from the front desk to the restaurants and bar, was impeccable. No matter what was requested, or need was expressed, it was instantly provided with smiles and cheeriness. The food at both restaurants was amazing. The rooms are big and clean, all modern amenities provided. The beds huge and very comfortable. The daily room rate is shockingly reasonable for all that's included. Our stay at the hotel included a boat tour of Lake Iseo, as well as tours of several attractions close to the hotel (separate reviews on those outings). We could have stayed for weeks... perhaps someday! Highly recommend Hotel Relais Mirabella Iseo. If you're ever close, you need to stay and enjoy the hotel!

The English turbot was only okay and the black truffles didn't add much to it. The crust was a bit weird. The eggplant start was nice and showed off some of the local fish.

While most people associate the Veneto with Venice, it also covers popular cities Verona (of Romeo and Juliet fame) and Padua (a university town). Most people know about VenetoInside.com if they are doing research for independent travel as they are the authorized retailers of skip-the-line tickets to St. Mark's Basilica and St. Mark's Campanile (bell tower). The tickets are on sale during peak season (April 1 to November 2) and can be booked 10 minutes before the chosen time. Skip-the-line for the bell tower can be booked from April 1 to October 31. When you purchase the tickets make sure to follow the directions exactly. I highly recommend buying skip-the-line tickets especially during peak tourist season. Though the basilica doesn't charge admission, you are not allowed to skip the line. With limited vacation time, it's certainly worth paying a few euros to maximize your sightseeing. https://www.venetoinside.com/attraction-tickets-in-veneto/tickets/skip-the-line-saint-marks-basilica/ https://www.venetoinside.com/attraction-tickets-in-veneto/tickets/st-marks-bell-tower-skip-the-line-entry/ Alternatively I bought a guided tour ("St. Mark's Cathedral and it's Treasures") which is a tour with skip-the-line privileges and admission to the Treasury and Pala d'Oro, which is normally separate from the basilica. They also promote exclusive access to the St. Mark's Baptistery and Zen Chapel. I had no problem with buying my ticket and redeeming it for my tour. My only issue was that the guide's accent was so thick I had to supplement my visit with Rick Steves' audioguide. Not only was I able to understand much more, that audioguide was free. https://www.venetoinside.com/tours-activities-in-veneto/tour/venice-st-marks-cathedral-and-its-treasures-skip-the-line/ The other popular option is skip-the-line guided tours of the basilica and Doge's Palace, the other major attraction in Venice. This makes sense as they are literally next to each other. The only reason why I didn't do this is because I wanted to do the Secret Itineraries tour, which is sold separately and bought directly from the Doge's Palace website. *** Another popular excursion in Venice is visiting the islands in the Venetian lagoon: Murano, Burano and Torcello. There are two options for doing this. https://www.venetoinside.com/tours-activities-in-veneto/tour/half-day-excursion-murano-burano-torcello/ (guided tour) https://www.venetoinside.com/tours-activities-in-veneto/tour/hop-on-hop-off-venice-islands-boat-tour/ (DIY option) The DIY option did not exist at the time of my visit (~July 2018) so I chose the half-day visit. I made the most of my half-day tour as it included a glassware demonstration in Murano and transportation via chartered boat (as opposed to a vaporetto) with information given in English, Italian, Spanish and French. Subsequent visits I will do the DIY option as this will give me time to explore the colorful houses in Burano and have lunch and visit the chapel/climb the bell tower in Torcello. While perusing the reviews of the activities it seems like whoever responds to the negative reviews treats the review writer with disdain, mostly accusing the person for not paying attention to the instructions. I found this quite rude. There is a certain level of decency that should be respected when responding to negative reviews - hospitality 101. I hope they take this into consideration.

They are all worth the extra few Euros. We especially enjoyed the last one which let you go upstairs to see the amazing gold mosaics up close and most wonderful you can go out on the roof overlooking the piazza- stunning views. No pics allowed inside but the vistas from this roof terrace were super. Can't believe I missed this on an earlier visit.

She's a young, energetic and exceptionally knowledgeable sommelier (soon to be) who gave us a wonderful education on local wines and winemaking as well as introducing us to some great local vintners and a lunch (we took a morning tour) at a truly spectacular local restaurant (included). Unlike what I've experienced in California, on the Pagus tour you are the only ones at the wineries and you get the full attention of the vintners, yet with very little sales pressure. When we visited - Christmas 2017 - the dollar was almost even with the Euro and the wine prices, were amazing. You can buy right there or ship home if you like... or both. BTW, I'm just a middle income guy, so for the well-heeled I'm guessing it's an even bigger bargain. The vintners put out a spread of local fare to go with the wines, such as bread, meats, cheese and chocolate. Yumm. I can't imagine how the tastings and tour could have been more enjoyable. I highly recommend it and that you request Sofia if at all possible. Oh goodness... I almost forgot, the wines are AMAZING. If you love a good Amarone, Ripasso or Valpolicella - don't skip this one!
