My other half has spent I a long time working in Europe, and has tried lots of beers that just aren't widely available here. I managed to find a lot of his favourites, such as leffe, (all the different strengths and colours), Orval and duvel. Not only do they supply the beers they also sell the correct glasses to drink it out of. (apparently, you need a different shaped glass for different types of beer to appreciate the full flavor). The selection of wine is massive with cheap bottles mingling happily with a fine section as well as some beer and cider. The staff here are very attentive and hark back to the Oddbins I used to shop at in the early 90's. These guys are seriously into their wine and love to talk about it. There is always a bustle about the place as they run a large wholesale operation so people whizz about with trolleys loaded with boxes, but will always find time to help you with your wine buys if they can. If you want good wine and decent advice this is the plce to go in leeds. The selection is really excellent and the advice to go with it is always available with special offers always on.

They had a few nice offers on some of their selections, which was definitely not the wide ranging classy choice that Chez Vin might have on offer, but certainly good enough for the less discerning drinker. All in all it had a much nicer vibe than, say, Bargain Booze (which can smack a little of desperation), but was not quite of the calibre of Chez Vin. However, this is more than just a Bargain Booze styled offie aimed at giving students their cheap fix. It actually stocks a jaw droppingly huge amount of varied spirits, especially vodkas, of which there is an incalculable amount coming from all over the globe. It's hugely popular, not just because of the fact it sells the answer to life's problems with such style and honesty, but also because of how friendly and unique the characters behind the counter are. It seems that although Leeds city centre has, hands down, a wider volume of stores Otley has, hands down, a better selection of specialist and interesting shops. ChezVin undoubtedly fits in to that category of specialist and interesting. They stock a range of hundreds of wines from over ten different countries, ensuring that they have enough to suit any taste and any budget. The owner of the store has a wealth of knowledge on the subject of wine, and so will almost certainly send you away with something that you'll be delighted with, and can find you the perfect wine for any occasion. Not content with providing the people of Otley and Leeds the perfect bottle of vino, ChezVin also stocks a myriad of different whiskies (to suit even the more discerning whisky fanatic) and a range of liqueurs and spirits that you might have trouble finding in your standard Bargain Booze. If there were only more ChezVins in the country than Bargain Boozes I imagine that our binge drinking culture might cease and people's attitude towards alcohol might become more refined. This is not an average 2-4-1 boozy newsagents selling cheapo nasty lagers, this is the delicatessen of the alcohol world. Worth making the trip!

Great whiskies, sherries, ports, madeiras, and some great wine accessories such as glasses, decanters, corkscrews too The real difference here is the hands-on approach - wines are very carefully selected by its manager, Andy, who won't stock anything he isn't happy with or which are found in obvious places like supermarkets. So you won't find Jacob's Creek or Blossom Hill here - instead there is a treasure trove of wine delights from around the world. The South African section is absolutely superb - so much so that HFW recently won South African Specialist of the year at the International Wine Challange, as well as being short-listed for best regional wine merchant. And rightly so - this shop has been quietly getting on with it for a few years now. Don't start thinking it's simply a shop for connoisseurs with loads of money - there are plenty of bargains to be had at the lower end of the budget range. Having said that you might find some vintage claret at over £100 a bottle and because this place is one of a kind and totally independent if you need some old vintage of a hard-to-find wine Andy will try and get it for you. Service like this is a very rare thing, but HFW has always tried to put customer service at the fore of what it has done for so long. You won't be fobbed off with something unsuitable and there is no way you'll be sold up to wine you don't want. If you need a bottle for a dinner party simply say what you are eating and the right recommendation wll be made. I have never been unsatisfied with anything I have bought from this shop.
