They had large and individual sized cakes. I bought a small cake and was pleased to see a flavor I had not yet seen - citron. It was a nice balance between sweet and tart. The crust was as wonderful as the filling. I also tried the local version of the macaron, which is similar to the type you will see 3 hours north in Saint-Emilion. I believe it is made with hazelnut flour instead of almond and they are naturally colored (no food coloring) and they are not filled. It was freshly made and very tasty. The staff was very kind and helpful, although surprised that I only wanted one macaron. I politely explained that I was dieting and was trying to keep my treats to a minimum. The window had a lovely display with elaborately made animals and other creatures out of chocolate for the upcoming Easter holiday. The shop also had a large selection of chocolates. If you are someone with a sweet tooth or know someone who is, it is worth visiting while you are in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

It's not the place to go if you are hungry since it can satisfy your sweet or savory taste buds. Personally, I could never work there as I would be as big as a house. Within two hours of leaving the place I tasted their cherry basque cake, macrons, chocolates and caramels. I enjoyed every bite and brought some home for gifts. The Crujiente de Kisquilla con Sorbete de Salpicón is one of the most sophisticated gastronomic creations I ever had. The flor de alcachofa, the gilda macaron and the Baresarian lamb are equally mind blowing. This is beyond food! 2. The service is impecable. Both serious and rigorous, and warm and close. The entire team helps and show their enthusiasm about what they serve. 3. The space is very beautiful. An exceptional spot in Igueldo with helicopter views onto the Donisti bay. The design is quite contemporary, but not the strongest. By a not great office named Mecanismo. The interiors are quite predictable. Most spaces enjoy a privileged view on the sea, but still is good. The light can be dazzling. The exteriors: are quite a cliche. Architecture could be way better here.

Smooth, creamy and with a few pistachios mixed through. Delicious. When he asked if I would also like a macaron with it, how could I say no? The caramel macaron was perfect with the gelato.

With that said though, I do enjoy various types of homemade style chocolate and that is really what Casa Aramendia brings to the table. Located within the tight alleyways of old town San Sebastian, most may pass it by, but do yourself a favor and bookmark this if you are a chocolate fan as it is worthwhile. The staff is very friendly, speak good English, and more than willing to help you choose some delectable chocolate. While browsing around I'd suggest watching the back room where they are making the chocolate you are eating at the moment or in the process of buying. Like most chocolate stores, they are willing to let you nibble on a few samples to help you decide which bunch you will be devouring. One downside, which is a bad word to use in this case, is the chocolate is not cheap, but trust me it is worth it as the flavors are intense and insanely tasty!

But alas, once inside, they had stacks and stacks of interesting varieties of chocolate, all calling to us wantingly to take us home! The store attendant had very little English, (and I have very little French), but he was kind and helpful, and let us taste several chocolates before we chose a few to take along for more "in depth" tasting. We were pleased with the results, except the our resolve to make it last for a week or ten days didn't stick. If you seeking out local chocolatiers, it's definitely worth stopping in for some "Real Chocolate."
