This street should be called Money Street instead of Main Street. A trip down this row of shops (95% of which are jewelry stores ) will set you back as a tourist by a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. If you are on the hunt for jewelry this is your spot and it'll be fun if you like shopping if not, its going to be annoying. There is some leeway on bargaining with shops but not by much and items that are non-jewelry are also very expensive. If you want a great deal consider coming to St. Thomas during Miracle on Main Street which is always the week before Christmas. Vendors on Main Street remain open very late into the evening and deeply discount all of their items like on black Friday. Food vendors are also open all over Emancipation Park, next to Vendor's Plaza and Government Hill to help shoppers keep up their energy levels with lots of local Caribbean food. Due to the hurricanes Miracle on Main Street has been cancelled for 2017 but hopefully there will be a great one next year.
My biggest pet peeve with this street are that the stores have employees walking around trying to lure tourists into their stores, they attack you like a swarm of piranhas, and relentlessly try to get you to be interested in buying something. If you want to be left alone, tell them that you live on St. Thomas and they are instantly not as interested anymore. If not take a break from these pesky people by grabbing a bite around this area in Virgilios, Greengos, Pasta Go Go, or VI ice cream. (See my reviews for these restaurants)
The architecture on this road is beautiful and is worth a visit to see even if you don't like shopping. All of the buildings are Danish old world construction and survived pretty well with the two hurricanes that came through the area in September. Not all vendors have returned however, the majority have. If you are visiting on a cruise ship this is a great place to add to your jewelry collection or pick up a souvenir from St. Thomas.
