We went to Extrablatt because our regular restaurant's cook wasn't in, so the kitchen was unfortunately closed. We had carpacio absolutely soaked in balsamic & oil as a starter. I had the most normal German food ever (Zander, Spargel mit hollandaise Sauce & some sort of local speciality version of salty Pfannkuchen) & every single thing was wrong. The bulk of the fish was way under-cooked while only the very ends were okay, the Pfannkuchen were gummy & tasteless & the hollandaise sauce was bubbly. My fiancé's pork was absolutely raw all the way through the middle & the Pfefferlinge-red wine sauce over it wasn't reduced at all, so just tasted nasty. The entire meal was horrible... as if made by a complete amateur. She saw that we didn't eat everything, I told her what was wrong & she still handed me a bill for 78€. Never again. The staff is a bit friendlier and the charm cannot be beat. Those two things describe the major advantages to this place quite well. The location on the edge of town near the train station and tram stop is ideal. It was a 15-minute trip, give or take, by tram to the Novartis facility where I had my business appointment during my trip to the Basel area. The gentleman who checked me in was quite pleasant and very accommodating. The facility was unique featuring somewhat older connected buildings that were well kept. My room was on the second level more or less in the "U" portion of the connection. My quarters were spacious enough with maneuverable bathroom facilities. The decor was a little plain but that is a minor drawback. The room looked out on the restaurant/bar patio, which was generally a positive though I did hear patrons gabbing until 11:30 or so. If I had been an early-to-bed person, it might have been bothersome. But as it was, they finished 30 minutes before I turned in so it was no problem. The morning breakfast was included in the cost of the room and was certainly more than adequate. The room rate was excellent for the experience. I paid €85, which beat the rates in Basel by a long shot. At the same time, I did not have to give up much of the convenience with the proximity to the city and the facile access to public transportation. As a bonus, if you have a chance to step outside after sunset to view the facade, it is nicely lit and makes a lovely sight if you enjoy those sorts of things (and I do). I will definitely consider this place again on my next trip to Basel.

You walk into a tiny dining room - maybe 4-5 long communal tables that seat ~20 people total. If you squeeze your way through the dining room and out the back door, there is a nice, fairly spacious patio with tables and chairs. Again, communal seating. The drink options are a selection of wines at various levels of fermentation and sparking wine (very good!). I think there might be beer as well. In any case, the menu is pretty simple: trout (fried or smoked) or schnitzel. Sides can be ordered separately. Think potatoes, cabbage, etc. I ordered the whole fried trout. It came with a side of horseradish cream sauce. So simple, so delicious! After dinner, we moved to an in-door table. With communal seating, you either focus on avoiding eye contact, or you make friends. The nice folks seated next to us ended up ordering a round of grappa for the entire table. It was lovely and a nice end to the evening. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path "locals" spot, this is certainly it.
