A few things to consider: your location is optimal for your pricing. Please consider a combo meal price. Actually pretty ridiculous. That two of us can eat for $25 when one of us orders a kids sandwich. Also seven onion rings and 31 french fries don't seem like a value for the price paid. I wish I had a Maid Rite in my hometown! This place was definitely worth the visit. The chicken fried steak was out of this world, and don't get me started on the mashed potatoes or the biscuits. (I went back and ordered more biscuits to go). And finally, the green beans had entire sections of bacon in it! Not to mention, everyone working there was super kind and friendly. I have heard about this place for years and was happy to give it a try while driving through Iowa. I had the Olive Maid Rite with tater tots and it was pretty good for fast food. The little bakery is nice and the attached shop has a lot of interesting stuff. Worth a stop. read more

We were traveling with friends to the Luke Combs concert in Kansas City and looking for a place to stop along the interstate. They recommended it based on their experiences with one in Illinois many years ago and we are so glad that we stopped. Although it is a technically a fast food restaurant where you order at the counter and they deliver your food to the table, the food was very good and the service was above average. Our group ordered a Tenderloin sandwich (see picture), several MEGA sandwiches (see picture), Sweet Potato Fries (see picture) and Fried Okra (see picture). Of course you have to have a MEGA when you stop, as it is what built the restaurant, but the Tenderloin and sweet potato fries as well as the okra were all very good. If you follow my posts, my sweet tooth is well documented...so I couldn't leave this place without sampling a caramel shake - it was delicious and I highly recommend you finish your meal with one on your way out to the car. Yes, it is fast food, but this place is quite unique, is an Iowa institution and has a very nice attached Amish country store. We were hoping for a quintessential American diner experience, and I suppose we succeeded, as it was a mixed bag of good and mediocre. First of all, the counter service was great. The young man was extremely polite and good at his job. Our lunches came out fast, too, in about 10 minutes. My husband and son had chicken tenders and fries, with cheese on my son's fries. They thought it was just okay. My grilled chicken wrap was mostly good, the chicken especially, but there was a black-mottled lettuce leaf and some of the chopped onion pieces were size of my thumbnail. I didn't eat those. Most tragic of all, the cheese curd dish was very small for $6 and they weren't quite hot enough, so they were dense with no pull or squeak. While the adjoining store and bakery looked interesting, we have zero interest in stopping at a Maid-Rite again. read more

convenient location just off the interstate attached to an Amish bakery and gift store just across the way from the Kingdom Hall. light crowd for Sunday afternoon but it's early October and the weather just turned cool so maybe that's part of it... typical counter service with slightly different offerings: I got a larger version of the namesakes sandwich and my lovely bride opted for some chicken and a biscuit, add fries and potato salad for sides and we can call it a meal. maid rite are loose meat sandwiches - lightly seasoned ground beefs on a bun (imagine sloppy joe without the savory red stuff holding it together) with options on ketchup, mustard, onions and maybe a pickle. broaster chicken is a lot like fried but made with better hardware resulting in a more appealing basket o' chicken parts. after living in Iowa for several years I half expected this would grow on me but like most regional dishes it hasn't quite: not a meal for the ages but it was good enough for lunch. read more

I'm not sure if they were under staffed or what but the service was slow and not helpful. We even told them this was our first time visiting and there was no response. We ordered the maid rite sandwich, fried okra and ranch. Our orders were correct minus them forgetting the ranch. We asked for desserts and they said they were sold out of ice cream. I'm not sure how a place that boasts about malts, shakes and desserts can be out of ice cream. A very strange experience. read more

Very busy place but if you're really hungry stick to either the chicken strips or broasted chicken as their sandwiches they're known for do not come with much ground meat. I have heard about this place and drive past frequently for work travel. I happened to be passing around lunch time and stopped for a sandwich. They specialize is a kind of bland loose ground beef sandwich. It resembles a hamburger that wasn't formed in a patty, or maybe a sloppy joe without and seasoning or sauce. Quality was fine, just not my thing. It is definitely an ear with a fork sandwich, so you have to eat it there. For a side I went onion rings. They were good, but a pretty small portion for the price. Probably worth trying if you never have. It is located in an Amish gift shop if that is of interest. read more

This is a good fast food. You can tell the ingredients are clean and everything seems to be homemade. I first had the loose beef sandwich which was very good. I went back for dinner. I had the pulled pork which they smoke overnight in house. This was recommended by staff and it was so good! While you wait you can browse the gift shop next door. It's little unique place. We stopped at the Iowa Welcome Center & we're happy to find a restaurant located there along with a gift shop. We had the 4 piece white meat broasted chicken & potato salad. The chicken was tender & juicy with a crispy outside. Two pieces were a perfect lunch for each of us. The potato salad was a small serving, not what I was expecting for the price. We were told there was a 20 minute wait for another batch of chicken to be ready. It turned out to be 15 minutes & definitely worth the wait. They even have a drive thru window. read more

We had a dinner outside on a handmade picnic table. We had Amish BBQ, sweet potato fries, vanilla milkshake and blueberry pie. I was surprised they had gluten free options. The baked goods here are wonderful. The BBQ was surprisingly good. The fries a bit over done but tasty. The pie really fresh and full of flavor. Tried to go to Hy V's but they had mask on so I turned around and found this little joint. Walked in though the country store which had plenty of cool things to see before going into the restaurant where thankfully no one was wearing a mask and I was able to see the faces of the very friendly staff. The food came out very fast and was delicious. I had the country fried steak with cheese curds and onion rings. My brother had the bacon cheese rite maid. We split with each other because we both looked at each other's plate in envy. The country fried steak was nice and tender and could cut it with just the fork. The burger isn't a traditional patty instead it's ground beef but is very flavorful and I can't wait to eat another one on my way back home. After eating we got shakes which were delicious. 10/10 recommend stopping to try this place. read more

Asked for burger "not over cooked" and it was crispy black. Fries were extremely over salted...had to scrape salt off to eat them. Maid-rite meat was slightly above room temperature. Bathrooms were not clean. read more

We had driven out of our way to go to Maid-Rite for sandwiches, fries and a malt. When we go into the building, one person had a mask around his neck, no one else had a mask on at either the diner. When we saw the guy with no mask on, in a high-risk place like a Welcome Center, we turned around and went to High V to get ham salad and bread and had a sandwich there. I just drove back home to Iowa from New Orleans and waited until I got to Lamoni so I could order mean right as my last stop before getting to Des Moines. I called wants to order my food which was mostly straightforward and a little curt. I got gas across the street and quickly realized I wanted to order a chocolate shake call back and the girl that answered the phone barely responded when I asked her what I wanted and then hung up on me. Fine, everyone can have a bad day the only person that was actually pleasant was the woman who rang me up. Upon getting my food I could see clearly that my cheese right had cheese sauce on it which is not typical in my experience with a made right and was not enjoyable whatsoever. The cheese curds weren't great and I decided to go ahead and throw out more than half of my order in the overflowing garbage container that is out in front of the restaurant. It's still there probably right now if you'd like to go check it out. I just spent $20 and 30 minutes of my time wasted... I don't feel like I need to be paying for terrible food and subpar service any longer but here we are. I work in service industry and I know good health is hard to fine but all you have to do is care a little bit. And two out of the three people I dealt with today don't care at all.
