This is my all time favorite store in Johnson City! The staff is always present and ready to assist. The one downside is very often the size i need is not available. In shoes most of the time. We live 1500 miles away and it very inconvenient but it's local so it's understandable. read more

High prices on literally everything. Staff is rude and follow you around like you're going to steal something when you just pick it up and look at it. The gun department is by far the worst, guys are not only rude but treat you like you are stupid. I'll buy my guns online and have them sent to any FFL and wait a little extra time before buying anything off of this business. read more

MAJOR LOSS TO MOVING ON. We recently loss most of our possessions and everything on our farm due to flooding of the Nolichucky River during Helene. For 15 years we have relied on the knowledgeable and personable team at Mahoney's for all our outdoor activity needs. Whether it was for clothing, shoes, paddling gear, guns, knives (bought way too many), fishing gear, or even how to tie a fly - the folks at Mahoney's have been amazingly helpful. As we "move on", we plan to take advantage of this wonderful local shop for our "resupply". You will not find another store that respects and values their customers more than Mahoney's in Johnson City. I went to purchase new optics for my glock when I was approached by a salesman in the gun department. I knew exactly what I was looking for and had my hands on the product I was interested in. After a brief discussion with the clerk, I left empty handed only to purchase elsewhere. Thats right, the salesman actually talked me into NOT purchasing the optics as he questioned if I had ever used that type before. I left due to pure principals of the matter. Of course I have used that type of optics prior as I am very versed in the area of discussion. I actually found the item elsewhere at a much better price as well. Thanks guys for shifting my direction to a competitor where I can actually have a conversation and save money. read more

I was in the store and was going to purchase several things in the gun department. One thing I needed was a holster for one of my small guns which I brought with me, unloaded of course. I found a holster I thought would work so I went to the counter and asked the woman if I could take it out of the package and see if it fits. She said sure and I took out my gun and was getting ready to show her it was unloaded when a salesman at the knife counter starts screaming at me and said "show us that's unloaded or leave the store" I showed the woman and tested the holster and it was perfect. I put the holster back in the packaging and put everything back I was going to buy and left. I will never return. Yelling at customers is about as stupid as you can get. If he was nice about it I would have spent about $150. read more

I loved that all the staff are wearing masks, but a lot of the customers were not. I usually try to support local businesses when I am traveling but I had to immediately walk out because I am at high risk and I will have to go to another store that enforces mask wearing during this pandemic. read more

I've been to the store a couple times in the past 10 years. Im from out of town and needed to buy a new coat since I've "outgrown" my other one. I make it a point to shop local and not at big box stores or online since I believe in personal service. The selection of coats was good but out of the 10 or so winter coats they only had two in my size. One without a hood and one with. Hoods are a necessity for the CT winters so I had one to choose from. I believe in quality also and the coat met my expectations. I looked at the price tag. One price was $265 and then the other price was $200. I asked about the difference and the manager did some research and explain that the factory accidentally put the wrong price on the coat. He then showed me online that the coat was being sold by other retailers for $275. I understand that mistakes happen and I felt like they should charge me the $200 for the coat because I was initially under the impression that was the factory or sale price. I also felt since this was really the only coat in store that was what I needed that I had no other choice but this one coat. The manager was willing to split the difference which I appreciated but still wasn't satisfied. I do not bring electronics with internet with me so I was unable to price check and make a decision. I placed the coat on hold and went to other retailers to see what I could find. I then went home to price check other coats. I found the same version on an outdoor retailer online for $220 plus 20% off with free 2 day shipping. Of course I bought it and expect it to arrive shortly. I am reviewing at 3 stars for a couple reasons. One the size selection was poor. Second the unwillingness to honor a marked price. The last reason is a little hard to explain but I'll try: I continually preach to my mother the importance of shopping local and not at Walmart. My mother was with me and was also confused by the whole experience. When I got back in the car I got the "told you so" speech. I was suddenly back to the beginning of the argument of shopping local vs large stores. read more

Went in looking for a specific knife that the website listed they carried. When I asked the sales person behind the counter, He told me they stocked it but were out of it at the moment. When I asked how soon they'd have more in stock his answer was a glib "we won't order more til fall". I would have placed an order and returned to pick it up when it came in had an offer been made, but it really seemed like they didn't care if they got my business or not. I just moved here not long ago, and have been I here a total of 4 times, each time walking out with something I love. Everyone there is great! Their inventory is superb! Prices are decent. I really love the place but cashier girl should smile more (as in at least once) and at least pretend to be more welcoming, considering that outdoors folks are a pretty "cool" little community. So a solid 4 stars for them. I normally would pick a local shop over online any day, but that deducted star is enough for me to just order online from now on... read more

Mahoney's is very overpriced! Terrible customer service! I've never had such a bad shopping experience like I have at Mahoney's! You will need a bank loan for most all purchases. Any other Outdoors Outfitter's stores will destroy Mahoney's prices on any product! read more

I have orthotics that go in my shoes it's hard to find shoes with removable insoles. Mahoney's have shoes that do this. Kiri was very helpful and patient helping me find the right shoe, trying them on is real important. It was a breath of fresh air to be waited on by an enthusiastic pleasant young lady. Wow. For a local business, this place is fantastic. I wasn't sure what to expect as a first-timer, but I was impressed as soon as I walked in. Service is stellar, and you are promptly greeted in each department that you walk in to with a staff member asking if they can help you. As we perused the store, we must've been greeted/asked if we needed assistance by at least 10 people. They manage to pack a lot into a seemingly compact building - it's tight, but not cluttered. On the weekend, the parking lot was full and the interior was absolutely brimming with customers. They have everything that you could need when you go to an Outdoors store. Their prices are even cheaper than full retail at other stores depending on the product. Of the 9 items we bought, everything we price compared on the internet (via smartphone) was actually cheaper in the store. If you need boots/shoes, ask for JT - he's incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Great selection, prices, and service. Well done! They also offer a 10% military discount. read more

Service, service, service. Beats the chains, hands-down. Not as large as the big chains, but still a good variety. They spend a good deal of time helping point me to a good trail on the AT, regardless of whether I was actually going to buy anything (I did buy several items). I visited several depts, and in each area, the staff was most helpful. read more

I have been there many times over the last decade. The best part about this store is the lower level. Well equipped inventory, friendly service. The upper level has been hit and miss. I have heard the sales people talk customers out of buying scopes etc. many times. On three occasions I was totally stumped by the service in the firearm department. The first time I went in there I asked if they had a shotgun my stepson wanted. I told them I needed model X with the the interchangeable deer and bird barrels. The salesman told me that he'd never heard of shooting deer with shotguns--ok, but they had it in stock and I bought it--and bought buckshot as well... The second time I bought a muzzle loader. The salesman told me the best way to clean it was with a five gallon bucket of water and dish soap. Well, I know better, I fired rifles for Uncle Sam for a decade. The third time I asked the salesman if a 1911 holster he was selling me would fit my 2011. He said there's no such animal as a 2011. Ok, I have found other places to shop now! read more
