I am updating this review - still "5" Stars. With the heat wave in Pueblo, this is a must for out door dining! The big tree in the patio keeps it reasonably cool. My mom and I came here as I just acquired a puppy and needed to have her with me. They have a super cute little back patio so it was perfect. I got a club sandwich and my mom got a burger. My sandwich was great, the potato salad not so much. We also shared the super tasty strawberry shortcake. Service was good. read more

We planned on eating here before a downtown show on Friday. All of their listed hours stated they were open til 7pm on multiple sites, including Yelp. They were closed, however, with a handwritten sign in the window that their hours are only 11-2. I can understand a one off emergency for a local small business, but it's frustrating when the hours are obviously consistently different than posted. Drove down from Springs and won't waste the trip here again. Made for a scramble with very limited options on a time crunch. read more

Magpies has become one of my favorite spots in Pueblo. The staff and food are always awesome! A consistently good meal is the scream cheeseburger. The cream cheese makes for a very unique type of cheese and it works! They also have changing daily specials. I loved every special I've had and love how it adds variety to their menu. The beautiful building is really something you should see. The service was great..our server made suggestions, even with suggestions on one dressing being better with the sandwich than an other due to flavors going together. Which, I appreciated! Magpies has a sophisticated art deco decor, mahogany wood, period art prints, and comfortable booths and tables with a quiet atmosphere provided by the carpeting, soft background music, and polite diners. Nearly everything on the menu is housemade and offers heavenly soups, sandwiches, burgers, gyros, salads & dressings, several veggie options, and scrumptious desserts. The restaurant obliges reasonable substitutions. (For example, if one prefers not to have the burger on an English muffin, there are other choices.) The service is excellent and the manager/chef is an owner. Her top-notch servers have been with the restaurant for many years; they strive to provide an enjoyable dining experience. There are two specials each day, generally one of which is an entrée such as salmon, tuna, enchilada casserole, and the like. The schedule includes quiche each Wednesday; the sidewalk board lists the days' specials. We believe the restaurant offers high value for the diner. The prices are quite fair considering the quality ingredients. Sandwiches range around $8-$9 including a side (sweet & sour coleslaw or potato salad are highly recommended); the Reuben is rumored to be the best in the region. A favorite among its customers is the scream cheeseburger (cream cheese and chiles). Magpies offers beer, wine, and spirits and was the first non-smoking restaurant in town decades ago, before Pueblo adopted the citywide practice and the state followed suit. We have been customers for the 40ish years since its opening. The clientele is primarily adult, which helps to preserve the serene, cool ambiance, though they do have a high chair or two for the occasional tiny human guest. I'm from out of town. My sister who lives near here suggested this place. She hadn't been here for a long . Place was not busy. Took for ever to get our meal. After we finished we ordered dessert. And boy, it took just as long to get the dessert. I would "never" come here again or recommend this place. read more

Magpies is a Pueblo secret. They've got some odd hours, so it can be hard to catch them when they're open. Once you're inside and seated, get ready for some good food. My personal favorite is the Scream Burger. It's a hamburger with cream cheese and roasted green chilies. Their meat is very well seasoned and tastes much better than an ordinary hamburger. I think they use english muffin buns also, which add a little something special to the burger. My wife and her mother have been going here for years and have tried many more dishes than I have, but they say everything is always good, especially the desserts! read more

HAMBURGERS --- Other than Larkburger (located in Denver and Vail), Magpies boasts Colorado's best hamburger - an excellent chuck of beef, served on a toasted english muffin - it's absolutely delicious and a completely unique recipe, only to be found at Magpies 2. DESSERT --- Of course, harkening the name, Magpies hosts Colorado's best desserts, which is a magpie - homemade vanilla ice cream, wedged into profiteroles and topped with homemade chocolate sauce - it's straight out of Heaven, itself!!!! Historically, Magpies has been around since the late 1980s and for a brief period in the 1990s, was open for dinner, but quickly shut that down, instead reverting to its mostly lunch hours.... why? We all had hamburgers and they were very good. I had the homemade potato salad and loved it. Service was a tad slow given that there was only us and one other group in the restaurant but the service was very good otherwise. Overall a solid meal, yum! read more

We finally caught them open this past weekend! And I am so glad we did. My hubs and I both had the scream burger. YUM! Not too spicy, but just enough bite and the English muffin for a bun really adds to the taste. I had potato salad which I finished, although it wasn't anything spectacular. My husband ordered the sweet and sour coleslaw which must be made with apple cider vinegar and it was Delish. And now that we know they are open for dinner on Friday nights we will be back soon! read more

I agree with Leif. Everything is good - but uninspired. The ambiance is nice, but kinda makes you feel 20 years older. This is the perfect place to take your grandma, and is super accommodating. But, "best" aren't the words I'd use. Good - not great. read more

Good things first; potato salad was good. Next the bad; Reuben sandwich soaked in Thousand Island, the corned beef was close to being all gristle, the "homemade roll" was semi-soft on top, hard as a brick on bottom and overall tasteless. The Basil Tomato Soup was not smooth, it was very coarse and tasted like Ragu spaghetti sauce. The sweet and sour cole slaw was mostly sour; the vegetables were fresh but tasted like vinegar. That may taste good to some people, but it's not cole slaw. The staff was friendly but slow. Mediocre fare at inflated prices. Seriously, go eat fast food before eating here. read more

Took my wife for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. She had a quiche with a salad and I had a Gyro sandwich and they were both delicious. The service was wonderful and our server was very attentive to our needs. We also enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and I know we are retired but that is what we also look for in a restaurant. So I'm not giving Magpies a 4th 5-star rating, or even a 4-star rating...sorry. It was good and, frankly, it is a little 'gem' in Pueblo. The staff was fast and friendly. Nice folks. And like anywhere, some were simply 'there'. But the food was good, OK, average...it's a sandwich and burger place. As for it being the best burgers in Colorado, well, people need to travel a little more in this great state. There are some real 'gems' elsewhere too. And I'm not talking about chains like Smashburger or 5-Guys or Larkburger or Ted's...and so on...There are some really good mom & pop places out there that really know how to mix the cuts well, grind their own meat, form a good burger and cook it just right. And as for desert...it's good, but keep swinging for the fences...Magpies is good, but good isn't great. Of course I'd eat there again and maybe I'll change my mind (review), but for now...did I mention that it's good. read more
