The hidden gems in Munich are so numerous that one stumbles upon them readily from any direction around Marienplatz. In this instance, it was the wonderful desserts and pastries of Maelu, a famous culinary delicacy in its own right. Along with the lovely ornate upstairs dessert venue, just a jaunt from the heart of the old city, the downstairs has its many delights displayed lovingly in the windows. This display caught my gaze, as I was taking a much needed stroll the day after a business event, on Valentine's Day. Knowing I needed to bring home something special, the gorgeously decorated heart-shaped chocolate desserts were a perfect gift. Before I travel to a new place I like to do some recon on insta and find some spots that look tasty or visually appealing and I bookmark to try to make it in while traveling. Well during this search I stumbled upon these absolutely stunning little cakes and I knew I would absolutely HAVE to stop in. Well my time in Munich was brief (24 hours to be exact) but I made it In to Maelu (I think I was first in line lol) and boy did they deliver. I got a cappuccino and the pistachio cake to enjoy there. Luckily they have massive umbrellas so I was still able to enjoy this breakfast outside even though it was drizzling, and I even found it to be quite a pleasant experience. It's a bakery so I don't know why I was surprised they have table service but the waitress comes right over and takes your order rather than ordering at the counter. (You DO order at the counter for take away though) Let's talk about this pistachio torte, oh my was it delicious! It has a delicious cake layer at the bottom but was topped with this succulent, I don't even know what to call it. Not like foam but it had this lovely perfect airy texture. (Obviously I'm not a baker lol so my terminology isn't the best) regardless of what it's called or how I describe it...it was amazing! I took some macarons to go because I am a macaron fiend, but I am deeply regretting not taking another torte or two. Over the last couple or of years I have walked by this place on many occasions and seen loads of people either taking photos or lining up to buy some of the amazing looking desserts and macarons. Finally we decided to drop in here for a hot chocolate and cake. They have a French hot chocolate on the menu and we decided to order a couple of things to share, like, a chocolate eclair and an apple strudel. I had no idea they had a cafe upstairs and it was nice place to sit and much quieter than the seats outside on the boardwalk. The hot chocolate here is divine and the best I have had in Munich to date. That alone would have done as its thick, chocolatey and divine. The eclair was also fabulous as was the apple strudel. I did look at the other things on plates around us and whilst they look divine, probably not my taste as most of them were moosey and something I don't like. I much prefer good stodgy spongy cakey desserts ;-)) Service was ok and value for money is a bit low here. It's not cheap by any means. I would happily come back here again. MaeLu's window is pure dessert food porn. I dare you to walk by without stopping to look at or photographing their colorful / artfully displayed desserts. I stopped by on a cold wet January day and it provided the perfect sanctuary. I spotted the apple poppyseed pie in the window and got it with my own pot of tea (it was so good that I returned the next day on my vacation, which is a first). Good luck picking from their vast dessert selections (fresh tarts, pies, macarons, chocolate, etc.). read more

It's a trap!!!! RUN!!! Just kidding, but really, if you're anywhere close to Marienhof you WILL be sucked into this cafe. As previously stated by another reviewer, the display case is 100% pure food porn. Even if you are not hungry because you just ate half a cow, the sweets just look too good to turn away. The next part of the experience is when you've made your way upstairs and have been lucky enough to find a seat. I suggest going at a less busy time of the day so you can sit by the window and have a pleasant view. The service is okay......there were only two girls helping everyone upstairs and literally every seat in the house was taken, so don't expect to get your order fast. I found the menu to be quite frustrating because only half of the sweets were actually self explantory by their name.....i.e, Himbeere Macaron is pretty self explanatory, but Pink Lady (or something like that) is not. The servers were too busy to really have time to explain everything. The macarons were delicious, and certainly worthy of the hype they receive. I also ordered a Mohnmousse (Poppy seed mousse) which I was suuuuper excited to try. This thing better be good for costing almost 8 euro. I have to say....it was a bit of a disappointment. The mousse itself was light, fluffy, and just sweet enough to satisfy me sweet tooth. And then I took another bite....the mousse had this fruit filling (that was possibly raspberry, but I just couldn't put my finger on it), and it was so tart/sour I had to eat around it. I'm sure some people are really into that sort of flavor pairing, but it just didn't work for me. I'll go back to MaeLu for the macarons for sure, but I'll have to think long and hard before I decide to return and pay about 8 euro for a dessert that may or may not be tasty. I have ordered a cappuccino and a pistachio cake and i found a long hair in the middle of the cake while i was eating it . I was heading back to my hotel and walked by this place. I saw that there was a line to get food AND they had macarons, so I told myself I had to step inside to see. They had rows and rows of macarons of a variety of flavors. I ordered rose, caramel, coffee, and violet chassis. The macarons were super good. The outside "shell" was sort of hard, and the inside was very soft (just the way I like it). The cream filling of all the macarons were really good too. Everyone appeared to be ordering this pistachio mousse dessert, so I decided to order it too. I thought it was pretty good, but not necessarily amazing. The mousse was nice and fluffy, but didn't really have enough of a pistachio taste to it. TLDR: if you want macarons, this is the place to go. read more

I even like their New York cheesecake, and as a native New Yorker, I am *damn* picky! Their macaroons will brighten your whole day. However, I often come here for something different, namely, lunch. They serve a decent lunch at good prices. The menu offerings usually include an assortment of sandwiches, a soup, a curry, a fish, a meat, and a fancy salad. If you see the window of this chocolate shop, you will be forced to stop. They have beautifully decorated mini cakes in the window that look irresistible. When you enter, they have rows of chocolate, truffles, and macarons that all look delicious. I got dark chocolate truffles and several macarons and was very satisfied. This place is full of fancy and rare desserts that is good for trying new sweets. Everything is shiny, beaautiful, same sweet attitude on the ground floor. We decided to seat on the second floor and hosted by a server. Once place became available waitress by name Vero asked what we want to order. We asked if tables outside belong to the same cafe. She confirmed but we were not sure because my friend wanted to be seated outside. She took the order but once she stepped out we finally decided to go outside to enjoy fresh air. She got so mad when we come out the table gesticulating and showing her attitude. She almost to through our paper order. Her anger was beyond our expectation, just because we decided to choose different table out of her area. I thought that I could not be impressed anymore by something from the cake and torte department. But I was proven wrong when I visited Maelu on Theatinerstrasse in München for the first time. Even though I have been treated to quite some culinary delights by Sprüngli and others in Zurich, I have to admit that Maelu beats them all (and everything I have had before). It was quite a surprise. The little tortes they have on display are just fantastic. A sensory explosion on the tongue (not to speak of the eyes). If you visit Munich and you dont have too much time, skip the beer and pork thing and pass by Maelu. Try the Pink Lady, Provence, Spring (I guess only now), Black Forest and my favorite Pistazie.
