Calico Coffeehouse - Gingerbread Latte

I chose to work out of Calico after seeing this cafe pop up on Instagram. It's a locally-owned spot…read morewith a few tables and booths that are well-spaced apart. The cafe had better vibes for chatting rather than for working / studying. I was hoping there would be more of a baked goods selection (they seem to carry the Donut Run's baked goods sometimes), but when I got there later in the afternoon, there was only one type of cookie left and it wasn't very appealing to me. I ordered a decaf gingerbread latte (seasonal special) which, aside from being a little too sweet for my liking, was a good latte in other regards.

I didn't even know this place existed until Anlina suggested we go there a couple nights ago. So I was very excited to see that the Thunder Bay tradition of very cozy coffee places where you could come and study, read or catch up with friends still existed. The waitress at the counter was very friendly and very professional. She told us that we could go sit down anywhere and she'd bring our drinks out to us. I ordered a vanilla cafe latte. It came out in a nice large mug and was really tasty, better than what I've had at Starbucks and Second Cup. They had a large selection of other hot drinks and cold drinks, and some tasty looking snacks on the counter (which I proudly managed to ignore this time around). I had a medium latte, which was priced around $3.50. The decor was very nice and relaxing. I loved the warm dark colors that made for a really nice, seclusive environment. My only complaint is that there were only three booths in which to sit at. All three were occupied when we arrived; two of which by one individual each. It'd be a lot nicer if they had a couple more booths on the opposite wall since I much preferred sitting at them than sitting at the individual tables. With really wide table-tops, it looks like an awesome place to go to get some work done without interruption. I'll definitely go back here next chance I get.

Amazing experience!! This restaurant has a a very friendly atmosphere with great staff. Coffee…read morearrived within minutes of being seated and the restaurant is very busy! The layout is spacious and the decor is average. The seating arrangement is free for all, so I imagine it might become difficult to find a spot during busy times (or maybe people are more courteous in Thunder Bay than Toronto, so it is not an issue!) The food is amazing. The serving is generous and it is quite delicious! The coffee is out of this world. Full bodied and flavorful. It is a wonderful place. I highly recommend trying this place out!!

We came here for Sunday brunch with friends and ordered the Timberjack Special (all day breakfast…read moremeal) and Mojakka Meal (homemade menu). My husband and I wanted to try the Finnish staples. Overall, the food was good. The breakfast was standard and as expected. I liked the Finnish pancakes because they were soft, buttery, and the right amount of eggy. I just wished the dish was a bit more filling. My husband enjoyed his Mojakka stew -- it was hearty and comforting. The beef was tender. It wasn't the most flavourful stew, but I think the point of this stew is to be hearty and classic rather than unique / bursting with spices. Again, my only criticism would be the portion size being on the smaller side. The service was prompt and friendly.

3 star at most, mom and pop kind of coffee shop, filled with very friendly senior locals however…read morethe breakfast was underwhelming. Coffee tasted watered down and they have only whole wheat as bagel options, which is smaller than a typical bagel. The takeout bag was bulky because each bagel was put in its own styrofoam takeout box. I suggest going to Tim's for a coffee and bagel, it's better tasting and much faster!

Well where to begin..... Let's start with the good:…read more Has the vibe of a small town local cafe, as I was sitting a few "regulars" came in and we're greeted by name asked about their lives and even offered their "usuals". The prices are not bad ($4 for a regular cappuccino or latte and $4.50 for a "large" although after getting the regular I am scared to see how big that is) Now for the reason I am giving them a 1 star review If you're going to open a cafe do not and I repeat do not go to the department store and buy a $500 single boiler machine you will embarrass yourself when you try to serve more than 5 people per hour. Also please teach your baristas how to make the drinks you are trying to sell, if I ask for a regular latte I should not get a 16oz cup with a single shot of esprsso and the rest being what I can tell is 2% milk (cappuccino and lattes use 3.25% milk heated to around 140°F) over frothed even for a cappuccino although I asked for a latte.... Milk heated to around 100°F please get soem proper latte/cappuccino cups 8oz and teach your employees how to prepare the drinks (honestly I'll come and do it this is embarrassing) And telling people "use the wifi from subway next door" is just sad. Go buy a 200$ router and set up a public wifi.... But first let's get a dual boiler professional drink machine in this place. Overall unless the owner gets things together go across the street to the other coffee place it's much better.
