A beautiful oasis in Izamal
This hotel is an absolute gem in the Golden City of Izalam. The Palapa serves as the dining room, lobby and "business center" (the only location with internet). The grounds are of a lush manicured jungle with foot paths numerous fruit trees, bamboo and palms. There was a beautiful natural pool which was lovely, empty and cold. The sleeping accommodations vary from bamboo huts to our free standing, family suite which was labelled as the Safari Room. It was a clean, spacious unit offering 4 full size beds, tile floors, a hot shower, a quaint porch and even mosquito nets although they were not needed.
Breakfast was included which was a fresh fruit plate with a souffle cup of yogurt, a strong cup of coffee, followed by fresh toasted bread with marmalade and then the main course of your choice. Either scrambled eggs with or without ham, a Mexican scramble or hot cakes. Dinner was available which offered steak, poc chuc (pork loin marinated), pollo pibil (chicken breast marinated in sour orange and mayan spices), pasta, fish entrees and some standard Mexican fare. The Pollo Pibil was excellent and the moistest chicken breast I may have ever eaten. The marinated chicken was cooked while wrapped in banana leaves. It was the winner of the night for my family's "best entree ordered" contest.
Sure, I could complain about the occasional dog barking in the distance or the hot water heater that needed relighting. But, I am sure that even heaven may have a few flaws outside its gates. read more
