You'll get both exotic imported and local seasonal fruit and veg here. Plus it's cheaper than large supermarkets and the staff are friendly and helpful. Michel's also stock items such as some fruit juices, fresh herbs, dried fruits, cheeses, coleslaws, jams, cereal bars, teas, pastas and bakery items. I'd give it a full 5 stars if only it stocked a few dairy free alternatives such as soya milks and cheeses - a fabulous little shop though.

At least, that's what I'm told, although I've never brought it up with the man himself. Michel's is the perfect shop to have on your corner - a good range of quality fruit and veg, as well as essentials that you might need for cooking a meal, from gravy granules and fresh herbs to groundnut oil and fish sauce. The only bone I would have to pick is that sometimes it's hard to find the local produce among the lettuces from Egypt and carrots that have been flown in from somewhere else. However, overall a little fresh fruit and veg gem.

The guy who served me was singing at the top of his voice so I started chatting to him about what else I could put in a curry. He suggested peppers, garlic and sweetcorn. I listened to his suggestions but didn't bother but I will tell you if I needed any more vegetables or fruit or herbs I wouldn't have needed to go anywhere else. Lots of fresh produce, very centrally located on the Ormeau Road and a massive airy space. I actually thought as I was leaving that they could expand into a deli or open a dessert section as the place is so big - maybe the could open a curry counter? Yer man was still singing when I left. Very friendly place.

As long as the local stores aren't stupidly expensive then I think its an obligation to try and support local businesses as much as possible. With this in mind I try and call in here after work to pick up my fruit and veg and have always found the staff friendly and helpful, always serving me in a polite way with a smile on their face. The prices are pretty standard and certainly not prohibitive if you want to shop locally. I like its old school vibe and would certainly recommend anyone who is up on the Ormeau Road to pop in and try to support a locally owned, sourced, provided and staffed shop.

Although I'm not usually one for pastry items, I can't but help purchase a delicious Danish or Maple-Pecan Plait every time I visit. There's a good range of wine, and as Lidl is a German store, some exciting products from Europe and around the world which aren't easily found in other Northern Irish/ UK supermarkets e.g. European biscuits, sweets, chocolates, Turkish Delight and roasted-salted chickpeas etc. Where Lidl disappoints, is in the limited range of vegetarian and vegan foods. There are a few veggie items such as the occasional Quorn product, frozen pizza and one option of sweetened soy milk. I would however love to see more veggie options and dairy-free milks, yogurts and cheeses. There's a cheap selection of household cleaning products but I'm happy to pay a bit more for ethical, environmentally-friendly and not tested on animal products, so I don't tend to purchase cleaning products which don't fulfil this criteria. Being a discount store everything is displayed simply on shelves or in large boxes. There's often an interesting array of random stock piled up in the centre of Lidl which can include anything from cheap art supplies, gardening equipment, clothing and kitchen utensils to exercise equipment etc. Ultimately Lidl is interesting and nice for an occasional visit, as a change from my regular supermarket. However I wouldn't do a full grocery shop here...

It's understated aisles are adorned with cheaper European alternatives to famous UK household names, but you be wrong to assume that the quality is any less. In fact I have found that quite a few products are just as good as their well known counterparts. Lidl also prides itself on being a champion of local produce and I have heard several reports that the fresh produce is without compare in the current supermarket scene. This particular branch has a instore bakery which has fresh bread and buns every day, several times a day. (Cookies are 35p a pop, what's not to love about that? My only gripe is the checkout. whilst the staff are very friendly, they do tend to let long lines grow and there does not seem to much urgency in letting people pay and be on their way!
