Probably 3/5 stars really, and we'll definitely go back. This is one of those lovely German restaurants that serve people out for their weekend walks; there is definitely a road to it, but that's not how you get to it, you get to it by parking back towards Waldenbuch and walking 25-30 minutes along the (paved) trail. Once you get there, you've earned your hefeweizen and wurst! This one, like the other further up the trail, is tucked into a little wooded valley, so it is quiet and peaceful. There is indoor seating, but most of the seating is outside to enjoy the outdoors. Seating inside seems to be table-service, but outside is self-service.
[If you've never had that before, it means you order and pay at the bar inside the door, then when your food is ready they'll call your number and you go grab your tray. Make sure you bus your table afterwards!]
We found the service to be friendly, but both the service and menus were only in German, so be prepared to muddle your way through! The server was cheerful enough about my terrible German though, so it was fine. The food was typical beer garden; eight varieties of wurst, a couple types of potatoes, and other basic German fare. It was all perfectly tasty, if unremarkable [although the bread that came with my wurst was excellent].
Overall a nice little place to stop for a beer or a bite to eat; and if you're looking for a reason to get outside, exercise, and then use up that exercise chit on beer, this is a good choice. read more
