Lush! The word hasn't quite had the same meaning since Gavin and Stacey came into the collective public consciousness, said in a Welsh accent and usually employed to describe a curry or a beverage. But long before we fell in love with the cross country couple and their friends, Lush was sometimes thought of as an if-wet alternative to The Body Shop due to its hippy vibe and natural products. This shouldn't be the case, because Lush stands apart. First of all, while the smell in The Body Shop instantly makes you hungry for a fruit salad or smoothie, Lush... is somewhat overpowering. You have to get used to it. I mean, those products smell STRONG. Nice, but strong. And remember, Lush is primarily a soap shop. It sells huge chunks of things, pink and glittery, glycerine and dotted with pieces of... something, jellified and wobbly. It can be confusing to a newcomer. But be aware, it's a veritable pick and mix of natural gorgeousness and you can simply ask the advice of the massively helpful assistants should you become confused. The staff. They're amazing. I wandered in once with the intention of treating myself to one of their moisturisers. They have pots of these for every skin type, no matter what your symptoms. I said I was combination with a tendency to dry out and very sensitive. No problem. The lovely lady presented me with one of their simple little black tubs (they all look the same, the packaging is as clear and crisp as you can get) and I have to say, to this day, I've never used a moisturiser more suited to my skin. I'd better hop in today and see if there are any special offers on... Another time, I collected a gift set for a friend who has a tendency towards bad hangovers. Again, staff helped me, and I walked away with a gorgeous little box full of invigorating shower gels and calming, headache-soothing bath foams. Personally I'm a huge fan of the bath bombs, they look incredible and do the job. If you're after something unusual they do solid shampoos, in a block, or a variety of exfoliants and potions. There's plenty in there specifically for the menfolk too. I love the location, a great little walk-in on my route home but it's as central as can be without being in the Arndale Centre itself. And with reusable bags with offers of free gifts if you come into the store again with them, its heart is in the right place. Get thee to Lush. Just try not to say it in a Welsh accent. Right next to The Body Shop though? Are they ASKING for trouble? See, I like Body Shop, but equally so, I do like Lush. But which is better? There's only one way to find out... FIGHT!!! (I've referenced Harry Hill before haven't I. Tut...)

There was a time when Lush was pretty much ok by me. It seemed like an easy option to come and find presents for female friends' birthdays, or as a little stocking filler for my girlfriend or something like that. Girls like shower jelly flavoured in blackcurrent or chocolate or whatever, right? Unfortunately, nowadays when I get anywhere near a Lush store all I can think about is the totally overpowering fumes of all the bloody soap everywhere! I swear it even spills out on to Market Street. But it's kind of a necessary evil. As much as the smell offends me, I will still need to find some mango body butter, or mint facial scrub or whatever it is for someone's present and Lush is the ideal place to get these things. Oh well.

"Hey, did someone order an instant headache?" That's always my first thought on walking past Lush, and is swiftly followed by a "No, but it's here anyway" when I enter. Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of Lush, and I like some of the stuff it sells. I just can't go there often, it smells soooo strong! Now we've talked about the strong aroma, let's talk about the bits and bobs creating that nice-but-cloying cloud. The bubble bars are a dream. On my return from Bestival last year, having spent too long without a shower, feeling basically inhuman, it was the Lush Comforter bubble bar that brought me back from the edge. At £3.95 it seems a little steep, but it's huge; my tip is to cut it in two and use it for two separate bathtime treats. Another favourite for bathtime lounging is the Cupcake chocolate and mint facemask. As well as yer bath and yer face, Lush can sort out your hair colour, with their Caca range. Tea Snob Friend swears by their Caca Rouge. However, if you're gonna be putting henna on your hair, please research it beforehand, as it can go all different types of wrong! One of my favourite things about Lush, and this branch in particular, is their readiness to give out free samples. I've always found that this branch has a great range of samples next to the till, and they're liberally sized, and liberally given. Another good thing about this particular branch is that the door is usually open, meaning there's as much fresh air in there as possible, helping to alleviate the headachey fug. At the end of the day, Lush is a great company doing a great job by shunning unethical products and trying their hardest to make everyone smell nice while keeping the earth healthy. So even if you do get a headache whenever you step in, you can't deny that Lush is, well, pretty lush.

Lush is my favourite place I love the bath bomb bubble bath bath bomb.there is always plenty of stuff to Gide you and tell you what you may need not the cheapest of shops but in my opinion it's the best shop in Manchester for your bath.

I am a curly girl with tresses which vary from sleek and shiny on a good day, to a frizzy halo- depending on the weather. Although certain high street chains and chemists have woken up to the fact that yes, we are a multicultural Britain with a diverse population who have individual needs, their range of products for people of colour can be very limited. This is not a political rant, it is a cold, hard, consumer fact. Afro World is a saving grace and "limited" is not a word that applies here. Having entered its hallowed doors, you have never seen so many hair and skin products in your life! There are rows and rows stocking brands such as Soft n Free, Dark n Lovely, Ultra Sheen and Pink, to name but a few- seriously the shop sells hundreds of them. The name of this store is a tad misleading as this mecca also sells makes for European and Asian hair types. You can buy a good quality real hair wig for only £29, extensions, and curly or straight pony tails line the shelves and offer you the ability to alter your appearance every day of the week. Handy for Geminis or international spies. The owners really know their stock inside and out. This is an incredible talent, considering how many lines are sold there, and they are always on hand to give you help and advice. Not many men ( with the obvious exception of hairdressers) are able to discuss with you whether you suit a wavy weave or a head full of corn rows in a truly macho fashion. Afro World also sells a good range of make-up for Asian and Afro-Caribbean skin and various hair accessories . It is open Mon-Sat 9am-6pm and on Sunday from 11am-5pm. Be aware that the shop is closed for prayer on Fridays from 1.30-2.30pm. So if you fancy a wicked weave, exceptional extensions or just need to stock up on your Kirby grips then this shop has it all.

It didn't help Bodycare and The Body Shop look very similar either. Bodycare is a large shop in The Manchester Arndale centre with great selection, they have a good variety of pain killers, shampoo, soap and lots of other things. The staff seemed polite and for a first time visitor of Bodycare I left happy as they did have a wide range of products for great value. If you are looking for Body products in the Manchester Arndale, I would recommended this large, cheap shop which is located next to WHSmith and near to Thorntons and EE. I have visited this shop a few times now and I have also found a good range of soap products here. UPDATE: After some consideration, including that the queuing system can often leave customers waiting slightly longer, and the design of the store, appearing to get as many products as they can, rather than spacing them out and making it into a modern, cool store, really lowers my opinion of this store, hence I feel a 3 star rating is more deserved.

Sally Hair & Beauty supplies is the largest retailer of professional hair and beauty products in…read morethe world. I made its acquaintance many years ago after I qualified for a "sally card" after completing a nail technician course as a hobby. The Sally card was my entry into a whole new world of salon products, all of which I was able to buy minus VAT. Professionals are very loyal to Sally, this is where they buy their equipment and products but I think this applies more to mobile technicians rather than salon based staff. Sallys is a mine of creams, gallon sized shampoo bottles and nail polishes. For all budding and seasoned manicurists out there, it sells every tool and implement you require and stocks the compulsory brands for all nail artists: OPI and Seche Vite. For the hairdressers Sally sells every perm product on the market, relaxers, conditioners and most importantly, kirby grips- who can survive without them? I once held a pair of trousers up at a christening with a kirby grip after the zip failed. The staff at this branch are two lovely women who have excellent product knowledge and can advise all the amateurs out there on what they need. When I visit Sally Hair & Beauty , I am like a child in a sweetie shop. I only call in for nail polish remover and leave with a bag full of cuticle cream, peppermint pedicure scrubs and a bucket of conditioner. So if you are serious about your grooming and find the hair and nail sections in department stores or chemists woefully lacking, then you need a trip to Sally.

The selection of most products seems to be quite good, especially in the two areas I come to the store for (toiletries and ready to drink beverages), the aisles can feel a little narrow and uncomfortable especially at busy times or when the staff are restocking the shelves, but this is common with Superdrug as a whole. The staff seem friendly enough, they always seem to have a good amount of people working the checkouts, meaning the queues to get served moves pretty quickly and the staff are friendly enough. TIP: Use their multi-buy offers which are often quite good, they can also be combined with other discounts including NHS/student discounts and the Superdrug loyalty card. 4*

Like the other stores, the lighting, layout and aesthetic are all a bit of an eyesore but the low prices mean it's constantly bustling. As well as selling all the essential toiletries and beauty products you could need, there's a large section of the store devoted to perfume, skin care and make-up. Alongside big names like L'Oreal, Ulay and Elizabeth Arden, they also stock a small range of natural and organic products including hydrating lotions, body balms and exfoliators. At the rear of the store, there's a pharmacist and aisles packed with cold and flu remedies, vitamins, supplements and herbal tinctures like Rescue Remedy. In short, everything you need to keep healthy through the winter - apart from knitwear.
