I recently returned to the North End Gallery after a 15 year absence. This place continued to have…read morea nice selection of local crafts, including artwork, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, and various other objects. I ended up with a nice bird that was carved out of Caribou antler. It wasn't cheap, but the quality and artistry by Maureen Morris was impressive. See picture. I was briefly distracted by a "big ass" hand made knife by George Roberts of Bandit Blades, but very reluctantly moved on. I also had a nice chat with one of the owners who had familiarity with the Canol Trail and the Old Squaw Lodge, no more appropriately called Dechenla. This is where I was for the last 10 wonderful days.

A significant part of the gallery is devoted to First Nations artisans, with masks, carved panels, drums, fur, beading, and tufting. Our extensive jewellery selection is crafted from gold nuggets, sterling silver, trade beads, semi-precious stones, and dichroic glass. We also carry etchings, Inuit sculpture, pottery and ceramics, metal art, blown and fused glass, and wood creations. Many of our artisans work in mammoth ivory, moose antler, caribou antler, and sheep horn, creating everything from sculptures and carvings to pendants and earrings. North End Gallery is consistently recognized by customers as one of the best shopping and art experiences they have in the North. We are proud to exclusively represent Yukon and Canadian artisans.

I know the Yukon is a bit out of the way for many Yelpers, but if you ever make it up to my old stomping grounds you have to stop in at the Yukon Artists at Work gallery ten minutes south of Whitehorse. If you love art, this will easily be one of the highlights of your Northern adventure. And if you think art is... just art... you still won't regret a visit here. YAAW is definitely a lot different than your typical gallery, especially the ones in town. It is run by the artists themselves, and each day there is usually a different artist working in the gallery. It feels more like someones house here, and it is nice to be able to chat with local artists doing what they love. No hoity toity attitude here, this is the north damn it. It's hard to be stuck up when you are constantly humbled by the surrounding wilderness! Every time I have stopped in for a quick look, I have left with at least one beautiful painting to remind myself why I love the north. My favorite artist by far is Stephanie Ryan, we have quite a collection in the works. There is a new addition next door called the Copper Moon Gallery, and I suspect that it is as good as YAAW.
