I recently took my husband here for Fathers Day, we are very fond of visiting Roman ruins while abroad and find the history to be fascinating. We thoroughly enjoyed the actual site however, there is a reason for such a low rating.
We were greeted by the most unprofessional, unfriendly receptionist. We literally had to almost beg for information; when asking about the local area (there is a castle local to the site), she was happy to just wave us off with It's just up the road, we asked if there was a map to which her colleague picked up one from the back shelf and showed us where to go from there. We were charged for car parking, there was no friendly smiles or willingness to offer up information, not even after we were stood there for such a long time trying to extract this information, we then wandered off to find for ourselves the entrance to the site.
The actual site itself is very well preserved and explained in great detail whereas while abroad you're pretty much left on your own with your imagination (and a guide book if you're lucky), so we enjoyed that. After completing the ground floor, the path leads you back out into the reception area, where shockingly that very same unhelpful receptionist was talking in great detail about what was on offer inside the site to another gentleman. I had to ask my husband what the hell did he say that we didn't to gain all that information because clearly, we were interested. The only reasonable explanation I could have possibly come up with was that she took a dislike to my husbands skin tone, there was absolutely NOTHING else; we are friendly, well spoken and not in the least bit uninformed. I always hate to accuse people of racism, in fact, in my 6 years with my husband, this is the first time I've ever done so and it still hurts my heart to think this is the case a few weeks after the event.
Anyway, we finished viewing the villa and left to find the castle (which was set in stunning grounds, I must say) and then walked back to the car which was parked back at the villa, only to find that we couldn't exit as the completely useless receptionist 'forgot' to hand us a token after she totally didn't 'forget' to charge us for the car parking. At this stage I was absolutely furious and vowed to never return.
Unhelpful, ignorant and just plain rude reception staff..unless of course you are a single white male, apparently. read more
